Accelerated
It occured to me the other day that being 'good/attractive looking' in this society is a big help in a number of ways. Obviously, looks attract the opposite sex in a relationship, but what about in other things: like finding work, making friends, establishing work contacts and generaly socialising etc. For example, if I was hiring someone to work on my team or in my firm and narrowed the field to just two candidates who have similar credentials, I would pick the better looking one, simply because he/she is in effect a representative of my team/company. I think, what I mean is, in general terms people tend to want to associate themselves with good looking people, dont you think? how big do you think this influence is? Another example of this infuence is plainly evident in 'The Apprentice'. I saw the ending of the first episode and found it to be disgusting, with everyone kissing Trumps ass. So I just logged on the net to find out who won and behold, out of all the contestants it was a typical American 'pretty-boy'. I mean if I had been given all the contestant photoes before the show began, with no other information - and just based my decision on looks, I probably would have picked him the winner. nairi
I think what matters more is 1) whether you're well-groomed, and 2) personality/confidence. It has to be a combination. Good-looks is too subjective. Being well-groomed narrows down much more that good-looks. Well-groomed as in clean-looking and neat. Personality-wise: confident but not arrogant; friendly but not submissive. But yes, at the end of the day, whether we like it or not, looks matter. Very much so. Accelerated
yes Nairi, I pretty much agree with you. But everyone who goes to a job interview is well-groomed/clean and eevrything equal, you would still employ the better looking person, and this has little to do with sexual attraction. vava
Studies have shown that taller & 'better-looking' folks advance further and have higher average pay level when compared to shorter, 'less-good-looking' people with similar credentials/experience. I'm sure that this is truer in some industries than others. So it's OK Juggs, you can go out and get that nose job

angel4hope
okie i just opened my textbook and found the stuff here it goes accelerooos: In one study, freshmen were randomly paired at a dance and later asked how much they liked their partner and whether he oor she was someone they might want to date. What mainly determined each person's desireability asa future date was his/her physical attractiveness (Walster, Aronson, Abrahams, & Rottman 1966). also read up on studies by Green, Buchanan and Heuer 198 Dion, Berscheid and Walster 1972 Eagly, Ashmore., Makhijani, and Longo 1992 here are more interesting facts.... we tend to assume that people who have one good trait are likely to have others. which is knopwn as the "halo effect" - self fulfilling prophecy- "peolpe who aer physically attractive are also more popular and sexually ecperienced"-- its almost like when you pick apples- the ones that are better looking you expect them to taste better to- compareing color of apple to human physical attractiveness and taste of apple with human personality.... im getting hyped up!! i loev these studies

Anoushik
Looks matter a lot. I just recently noticed that looks matter very much in classes too. An attractive student who tries to be nice to the professors, male or female, is more likely to become a favorite in the class than a student who's nice but not as attractive. And of course, being a favorite student guarantees better grades. Like I said, I just noticed this recently and will keep this in mind for next fall. Not that I haven't been always a favorite (or one of the favorites) but I wasn't aware of the attractive factor. (I guess if I'd observed professor/student behavior a bit more closesly I'd noticed this sooner but I must've been absorbed in my studies too much.) bellthecat
But everyone who goes to a job interview is well-groomed/clean Not always - because often it is the interviewer who is anything but well groomed and clean! I once turned down a job because the interviewer (who I would have had to work closely with) had the worst case of bad breath I've ever encountered. Hye_Acher
Has anyone noticed people are more likely to open the doors for the attractive people in public areas than not so attractive one's??? <_< I keep noticing this everytime I go to the mall. THOTH
I think being the "favorite student" is annoying. I prefer to be the “unnoticeable” student. I hate the long talks after the class with the professor or being asked questions during the lectures in front of hundreds of students. Now that’s not cool. Has anyone noticed people are more likely to open the doors for the attractive people in public areas than not so attractive one's??? I keep noticing this everytime I go to the mall. In my days I ran the gamut from faovored student (ussually because of what I had to offer (intellectually/regarding the class subject matter etc) - not looks to being the one who directly challenged the instructor in an adversarial way (sometimes with disputes ending up going to the dept head [who backed me! lol] - yeah its good to be in with certain folks...) There is something to this good lookign thing...saw a TV pioece on this once where they had folks who were striking looking and those not looking lost and needing help in Manhatten - and other people were comming up to help the good loking ones everytime while the normal looking folks got little or no help... and you do notice this (regarding yourself) eh? ! - well good for you - why not take advantage eh? THOTH
Well some of my best interviews have been over the phone...! But I do recall one interview where these folks were very interested in me and tentatively gave me a job offer but before I left the interview they suggested I might want to cut my hair a bit, shave and suggested that I not wear a belt with bullets in little bullet holders on it (like I was wearing for the interview!) - etc etc - I promptly told them that I would (basically) do as I please and they could take me or leave me - as is! (Got the job BTW...though predictably I drove them nuts with similar [insubordination - for lack of a better word...])

Poor instructors, they had to face an anarchist that would criticise everything.

So which one are you? Fair enough Accel. So what about personality on top of being well-groomed? Maybe it also depends on the position, whether it's a public representive or someone working from behind a computer... no? Because then you may wonder how so many Armenians have jobs... Or should I say nose-jobs?

I'd rather have a good teacher , who can critisize you- help become "better" in whatever sucject im studying, than sucking up, or taking advantage. its not for the the teacher im studying, but for myself. everyone sets their own standard. so take the nose job, cut your hair, and put on make up(if your a woman),but at the end of the day, what counts, is your abilities/knowleadge and that what you want to do with your life , and that you are aware of what you want, not what other people think of you.
