Motivation

I have noticed that recently I get reallly unmotivated and lazy when it comes to studying and writing papers. I am uncertain to whether ther's a correlation between the fact that my mind and body are weakening and I cant handle the stress, or whether it has to do with the fact that once you study alot for a test and give it your all, you get a mediocre gradeand expect better--> which unmotivates you-- ME in this matter.

I was just wondering what motivates you guys and "unmotivates" you...

In my case- when people praise my hard work and help me see my defects and try to point out the good along with the bad (and instead of harshly criticising me and putting me down) I do better when I am surrounded by positive energy-

But its weird how when people tell me that I cant dop something and that I am "stupid" I thirve upon the circumstances- and try to prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to--

The irony here lies in the fact that I am motivated in both situations- but due to different circumstances and up to different levels- and my motivation factor (working positively towards a goal and thriving on peopels positive words- or porking with a negativeness- in trying to prove someone wrong- istead of doing it for yourself- your own goals) is different and gives me either a positive or a negative reason to work towards a goal- but I am curious to what motivates you guys more??

My desire to note be average, to avoid as many mistakes as possible, and to not 'kill' myself in any stupid way, those are some of my motivations.

The constant pursuit of knowledge, the desire to make new friends and cause people to laugh are some others. ;)

I don't think anything really motivates me. It's strange... I mean I love life and everything it has to offer, I grab on to it like to a juicy piece of roasted chicken and sink my teeth into it. I live knowing that there is another day with something new awaiting me. But lately my days have become very identical and turned into a daily grind where everything is exactly the same. So I am having difficulty finding that motivation to not have a sour face every time I wake up. Weekends motivate me, travel and a good book motivates me, my friends motivate me. I think I've rambled on too much, but angel jan, is this a valid motivation or should I consult Dr. Phil?

evester jan -- anyhting that makes yuo feel "propelled" or puts a smile on yor face is a motivator- Im not doctor phil here, but through personal expereinces and some psych courses ive learned things that i can put to good use....

in my case-- here's what motivates me: Warning--> some irony involved lol

- when people support me and helpe me

- when people put me down/degrade my knowledge or sense of self- i tend to "strike back"-- like when my teachers would pick on me and think i wasnt smart enough-- i used their negativeness and got positive results- i worked hrder and proved them wrong at awards night :) and when i got into colleges of my choice-- and i actually went up to one of my teachers and literally told him to go screw himself- cause of all the shitt he put me through- descrimination cause i was armo-- but oh ell- i succeeded- ths shows that when people tell me i can t do something- i get super motivated and work harder to prove them wrong--

- im also motivated most by my parents and friends-- their support and advice goes a long way...

- i also get motivated by coffee hehe- -yes- days where i only get 1-4 hurse of sleep and stuck n traffic for 3 hours- the thought of coffee motivates me to stay alert and awake-- and coffe itself keeps me awake through monotonuos and bland lectures one after another-- hehe smetimes the cafrfefine motivates me to almost want to get up and run arond the whole lecture hall-- dont ask me why---lol-- it just does- ud understand if u were in the same position-- truuuust me!!

yes and those are my weirdnessses-- hehe weird and proud-

In this day and age the vast majority is motivated by MONEY, yes sad but very thru

You know Edo jan, that is precisely what I was thinking when I was writing my first response. The truth is that we ARE motivated by money, we function on daily bases and move forward to earn money to pay our bills, have dinner with our friends, and help our family. Motivation always presented itself to me with a completely different meaning, the word itself symbolized a drive towards something more spiritual and divine, something that fills your lungs with inspiration and energy. I guess I am getting a bit romantic here, but that is all to make a point.

However in reality motivation means something as simple as moving. Yes we move, but do we move towards something that fills us with that soaring energy and joy. Do we wake up every day thinking “Wow, this is so exciting! I am going to go to work and earn $100 today! Super!.” I doubt it. I think that it might be the dullness of the pattern that numbs our creative senses. Think about travel, you enter a different country or a city and every day you are inspired or motivated to wake up and explore. That would be the motivation I speak of.

So does money really motivate us, or simply fuels us to keep moving?

Money does not motivate me. Don't get me wrong, I want it just as much as the next person, but what motivates me is all the things that that money can offer me...

So maybe money is the indirect motivator, but it definitely is not direct motivator as I spend it as if it is going out of fashion.

I think people are motivated to do things in general for 2 reasons, to either gain pleasure or avoid pain. The people who are motivated by the desire to gain pleasure are the classic "carrot on the stick" group. They have goals that they want to achieve.

The other group is the group of people who some times are incredibly good and many times can be seen as "lazy". A person lets call him Azat for this argument, may be motivated to work harder for the sake of paying all his Credit Card bills on time or doing things to avoid the pain of the consequences.

What the hell am I talking about. I sound like someone who knows something about this and in reality I know nothing...

Angel, there are great books on this.

Totally agree Azat, Ani, I always said to my son don’t let life to make whatever it is out of you, you make your best out of life, as I get older and maybe a bit wiser I intend to have a deferent view on things such as motivation, I can try my best and do everyday to point out things of motivation to my son, and yes I need to be motivated also, sometimes I have to mention money to my kid so he knows without it its a bit tough out there, of course deferent types of motivation, such as poetry music, humanity, spirituality, love. But you may agree with me, there must be something fundamentally wrong, and something very precious is vanishing from our society where money is the ultimate motivation and success, where success is majored by the size of your wallet, or now days it is portfolio.

The Marxist would say, is that in your nature or are you forced to act in that manner in order to survive?

So the rules for reproduction and survival in a capitalist society is maximize your price/cost ration, accumulate, specialize, etc., reducing all human social relations to that of a commodity. Even the people we date or associate with, Marxists contend that it is based on our class structure, and thinking.

I think it's a bunch crap, but for the sake of argument I had to state this.
