Sip
Like any language, you can spend an entire lifetime studying and still not know it! But to answer your question, it will heavily depend on your surroundings and your abilities. I can generally pickup a language and speak it, at least for day-to-day conversations, in a matter of about 2-3 months. It was the same for both German and English. In about a year I can be indistinguishable from native speakers. However I look around and see people who have been here in the US for years and years and still can't speak English which I consider much much easier to learn and speak than Armenian. SparklingCider
So your saying it'll take a HECKKKKA LOOOOoooOOONG time, right? lol, cause this yr theres a lot of armenians in my school, and they always mention this and ask questions, and it gets annoying, so i want to learn it..lol. it seems like a realy cool language to learn

Dan
lol.. get some books on it.. you'd be surprised at how much you can learn on your own (well, not necessarily pronounciation, but sentence construction, etc.)
SparklingCider
good idea, i havnt looked for books cause im sure i wouldnt be able to find one at a store, but i looked up some words on the internet, and learned SOME words, but they dont realy have anything good to learn except the cuss words, which are hilarious. Dan
heh.. hmm, now i know it'd be harder to find a self-teaching book on Armenian than it is to find a book on German, but i'm sure if you look around, you might get your hand on something good. And if you find a book, a dictionary from English (or your favourite language lol) to Armenian and vice versa would be handy too. Welcome to HyeForum, btw. Hmm come to think about it, sev-mard might be of help to ya.. so if he sees this post, he might be able to help you (if he wants, that is) with book titles and tips on where to get them from.. assuming that you're in the States, that is.. i'm not sure what the state of our literary presence in other European countries such as Russia, etc. A good place to start would be to ask people around you who know Armenian what this or that means whenever you hear them talking. I don't think anyone can learn a language without having the curiosity to understand it.
SparklingCider
dude...i cant even read/write russian i dont realy talk to them or get along with them at school (because of my mix ) but i wish i knew how.....but if i went there, i would learn HECKA fast, cause its easy once you learn how to speak it Theres also sites where you could order books online, and then theres the software that you learn it on the comuter, and they had like hundreds of languages they teach you, including ones i've never heard of....but NO armenian, psh....this is california ya know? i should write a letter of complaint
whoislight
hey SparklingCider, i've been using the Pimsleur language tapes. they are the bomb! the set includes 5 tapes (10 lessons total, 30 minutes each) - the dude (Pimsleur) is a linguist and he devised a very effective method to teach conversational armenian. if you're really serious, check it out... 30% discount on amazon... Western Armenian Eastern Armenian i'm on lesson seven and i've learned more than i thought i would (not just vocubulary and phrases, but language structure, as well) - my dad is amazed! let me know if you have any questions about the tapes. good luck! sev-mard
Yeah young one, I would say something like Pimsluer or a class is good for you, unless you're dedicated enough to teach yourself? There are some sites on the web, learnarmenian.com has some introductory lessons, also cilicia.com has a section with lots of different sections in there as well. As for learning a language like THOTH said, if you have a solid memory and most importantly a constant source of the language you can actually pick things up pretty quick. So if you can learn some basics and then really "try" to use it, or at least be around people who are speaking it, you can improve. I taught myself Japanese while living over there, so I think almost any other language is possible. There are some tough sounds in Armenian of course, but if you speak Russian you should be okay. nairi
Dear SparklingCider, You're right on the verge of the so-called "critical age" to learn a language, which means that if you start NOW, you're likely to learn to speak, read and write a language like a native-speaker. If you wait a few more years you'll have to work at least twice as hard to reach that. If you speak more than one language now, you'll probably have an easier time learning a third, but if you can only speak one language, the trouble to learn a second one at this age will become harder and harder. Please note that these are harsh generalizations and that at the end of the day it's up the individual. Good courses, books, native speakers and most importantly, motivation and a positive attitude can sometimes take you a lot further than age. As for how long it'll take Again, it's up to the individual: some will learn faster than others. It's up to you to find out. But if you live among native-speakers who refuse or simply cannot speak another language and you are forced to listen and express yourself in the target language on a daily basis, you'll be more likely to learn it faster than if you try to learn it isolated from all this. Good luck!
