Can One Be Honest?

Can one truly be honest at all times? My experience has proven it can’t be done in a real world.

I was recently dismissed from my job and when applying for a new one I was asked if I had left the last job on good terms? I lied yes. Had I said the truth I would never be hired again.

Now does that make me a dishonest person? Charlatan? How many of you lied in your resume or exaggerated the truth to qualify as a lie.

I would lie only if it's a life aim we're talking about - i.e. getting into Air Force. They ask us if you've ever smoked weed, etc., and yes, I would lie, because my dream is to get in, and if I tell the truth I will lose the chance/opportunity. Other than that, I'd try to tell the truth.. but still, i'm not sure if I can be successful at it. depends on the situation and my instincts/reaction at the time.

I have never been married myself but I'm told the answer to the "Do I look fat" question is ALWAYS "NO". Dear Armat, I think it is impossible to be "honest" all the time. Many times we may believe something but act and say another way since we KNOW that is the correct thing to do. Our minds aren't always pure ... anyone who claims to have a pure mind IS a charlatan. But our actions and the person we are can certainly be pure and righteous.

In other words, always telling the truth about what is in one's mind doesn't make one a good person. Otherwise I would be walking up to every single good looking girl I see and telling them all the stuff I want to do to them. That would be honest but not right.

we all lie. lying is not necessarily bad as long as you don't cheat, deceive personally or otherwise with some evil purpose, and similar things. The other alternative of not lying would be silence if you are asked a quetion and don't really want to lie, then you just don't answer... but that's just not practical, so yes we lie. However, there are a few enlightened individuals who REALLY don't lie.

Funny because I was just thinking about this the other day. How I harp on dishonest ppl, and I always lie and tell ppl that im honest, but the truth of the matter is I do lie, or hide things, or not share the whole truth. It's tough, damn near impossible. I very guilty, not of lying, but of not sharing information. Sometime ppl just don't need it! Other times i'm wrong for it, so it's tough for sure.

Everyone lies!Small lie, big lie."you look great" to an ugly person. "Ohh your baby is sooo cute" In fact the baby may look horrific! etc.

when it comes down to things like that (i.e. when someone asks me for an opinion, esp. about beauty, etc.), I am brutally honest. And more often than not, it lands me into big trouble.

edit note: I dislike people who want an "honest opinion" and then get mad when you tell them the truth they don't wanna hear...

I agree, when someone asks for an honest opinion they should get one. But then at the same note, it's very rude to give an individual your negative opininon if they never asked for it.
