He left school at age thirteen, but he remained an avid reader. He worked as a telegraph messenger, newsboy, farm laborer, and office clerk, and he drew from these experiences to write short stories, novels, and plays. His first publication, the story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" (1934), began a successful writing career. Five years later, his play The Time of Your Life won the Pulitzer Prize. He refused to accept the award, however. He believed that businesses should not support the arts (the Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher) and that the play was "no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan's success continued. His novel The Human Comedy was published in 1942 and made into a movie, for which he won an Academy Award in 1943 for the best writing of an original motion picture story. Saroyan became very popular through the 1940s and 1950s; altogether, he published more than 60 books. He died in 1981. William Saroyan is still well known among the Fresno Community and now has a theater named after him.

gamavor
The question was directed to Piggy, but thanks anyway! Actually he returned the prize. The most conventional way to find out if one is a good writer is to read him. That of course is just my opinion.
PiggyWiggy
LoL wow...a Pulitzer prize? That is preety good for an Armenian. IMHO, I believe it is better to act and feel Armenian, along with your friends, rather than publicise on the matter... Armenians these days...tattooing Armenian Pride on themselves and driving 1,000 Dollar Vehicles with 4,000 Dollar Rims... Ironic...Correct my spelling please... PiggyWiggy
Yeah... It is the environment, and people just want to fit in, even if they want to make a mockery (did i spell it right?) of the entire race.

PiggyWiggy
That is a strong point. For an immigrant to make a name of himself in a foreign country. Is that not? Or are you stuck on something? Hangstatsi. Vor Sirtht vat ah, petk chi grves.
Armo77
William Saroyan was NOT an "immigrant". He was born and raised in Fresno, California!
PiggyWiggy
And? I made a mistake there. His parents were immigrants, and for someone from an unknown people to become a great American Novelist, that is a great accomplisment. PiggyWiggy
I know. Drive a nice car, no1 is saying anything... But be sure you have the wallet for such a luxury... Armenians, they will buy Benz, and be on welfare... Now tell me, is that right?
phantom
I know. Drive a nice car, no1 is saying anything... But be sure you have the wallet for such a luxury... Armenians, they will buy Benz, and be on welfare... Now tell me, is that right? No, that's not right at all, those people should be deported if they are scamming the system. But that's just a small percentage of the Armenian population, and they are only the newly arrived immigrants. The vast majority of Armenians are fiscally responsible.
