ED
To All I have a dell workstation, lease it back in may of 2002, today had a power outage in my aria (san Fernando valley) somehow power protector failed to do its job, finally power came back, OS is win 200 pro. I contacted DELL about it, after waiting about 30 min finally a technician from India came online, an hour of back and fort, asked me to start up from the CD, did that or what ever he asked me, then as it started to supposedly reaper the hard drive he assured me it is a software problem so he left, well the problem is after it repaired it, I was suppose to start and everything is going to be OK, same problem, THE PROBLEM is, once you start press the power button, start booting, goes into a screen where it says, win 2000 professional, then right after that a BLUE screen pops up for a split second, I'm only able to get the error massage? [o0000218] the bunch of staff I can’t reed; anyhow..............I don’t want to call back to DELL. It is my work computer and I have to get it back on running or I'm screwed, my files are in it and don’t have a back ups The question I want to ask is Does this sound a hard drive crash? Or anyone can help me please? I thank you
vava
Doesn't sound like a crash - but you may have some bad sectors or errors on the drive. Seems like a system (software) problem based on your brief description - although win2K is usually rock steady. I think win2K has a repair system installation if you boot from the CD - you may want to try that BUT you should ALWAYS have a backup Edward. ALWAYS!! And keep it up to date! I don't know how many times I tell people this.... good luck... I gotta go to bed...

Sip
Could be a lot of things. That blue screen could be just software error or physical disk error or worse yet, some hardware error. It could be coming up when windows tries to initialize some peripheral (like video, audio etc) By the way, the recovery CD's they tell you to use could wipe out everything and take the PC back to original factory condition. So not sure of the state right now but before following their orders, make sure it is not something that's going to wipe out everything you have. In any case ... no backups? This is what you can try ... when windows is starting, press F8 repeatedly ... it should take you to a menu where you can chose "safe mode" ... see if it'll go to safe mode or not. If it doesn't even go to safe mode, then you have a serious problem. If it goes into safe mode, then you may be able to repair things. DominO123
If it was of me I won't try anything... I will take that HD out, connect it on a working computer and save all the datas... that will protect you of doing a stupid thing... by this... I'm going to bed, it's late here. Azat
... it just wont go insounds like a personal problem to me... sorry
Azat
Edward jan, first thing to do is to get a Knopix CD or some kind of a Linux on CD that you can just boot from the CD and never hit the hard drive. Once there you can use the back things up to another PC on the network or burn it to CD. That is step one. After you have a backup consider running the Dell restore and see if you can do a restore of the OS without a format. You should be able to do that. And that would/should fix things up. When you have the system up and running establish a weekly backup. It is VERY important.
Anileve
Your registry is most likely corrupt. Check these out: http://sft-cyber.com/Corr%20Reg.htm http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...B;en-us;307545& And Dell sucks by the way, I would never buy their product, but it is cost efficient for large company purchases of workstations. After a while they become useful for throwing then in trash cans for a classy sound effect. I personally prefer my dream Alienware Area-51, now that is a machine!
