New Armenians In U S

OK, but I take it you've never even visited Toronto and been involved in the Armenian community here. So how do you know that they're not? And for the record, I did not mean that they don't work when I said they don't have any other occupation. I meant that they are just obsessed with gossiping and seem to do it so often that it is their secondary occupation, sorta. :D

Those are not generalisations. Those are observations. And when you actually KNOW what it's like here, then I don't think you're in any position to accuse me of generalising. :D Furthermore, I said that there are a few good Armenians in Toronto, who aren't into imitating other cultures, who are proud to be Armenian, and who don't go to "agoump" in order to meet boys/girls and find a date for themselves. Sad but true - that's the state of the Armenian community here. About 90% of the people who go there are like that. I know almost all of them, as I have been in Homenetmen Toronto for some time, and am there quite often. <_<

Jesus Christ, I didn't say ALL Armenians in the world have no occupation other than gossiping. Talk about generalisation.. And for the record, I am not so proud of Kriokorian receiving that medal. You probably guessed why. I had a debate about this with my mom today, and I'm NOT gonna get into that. I repeat, I am NOT gonna get into that, so don't even go there and tempt me to reply. ;)

Of course. I never said all Armenians gossip. I said almost all Toronto Armenians do that, and they DO do that. :( I rarely if ever make claims I cannot support or that aren't true. 90% of the Armenians I know are pretentious. There is an Armenian club at my university - I never go there. I would've loved to, had the people been more mature than to just gossip and stalk others...

I am not being destructive in my criticism. There is a difference between being destructive and saying the sad truth.

Dan, I find your claims hard to believe, unless for some reason Toronto Armenians are somehow different from all other Armenians. I know Armenians from all across the United States, Istanbul, France, Beirut, and Armenia, and I'm quite convinced that 90% of them are not gossip queens with nothing better to do with their spare time than to gossip about others. I was involved in the Armenian Students Association when I went to college, and I had a wonderful experience with the friends that I made there. And almost ten years later, I am still extremely close to some of the friends I made through the ASA.

But you're right in that I've never been to Toronto. So I guess I can't comment one way or the other about the Toronto Armenians. That notwithstanding, based on my impressions of the Armenians who I have met, I respectfully decline to accept your "observations" about the Toronto Armenians.

OK, but what would explain that fact that I think that they are? I mean, I don't go around calling people gossipers just for the fun of it...

I guess I don't fit in then... I gave it more than one try and went to the ASA, and people just ignored me and any other newcomers.. It gave me the impression of cliques whenever I went there.. :( Besides the fact that I chose to stop going there because people started talking about an issue that hits close to home to me, and they were pretty hateful in their views...

lol, I'm not trying to convince anyone here. I'm just saying that those I've met here have given me that impression, and who knows, maybe I'm being too judgemental, but I didn't just judge them at first sight... I know these people, and I dislike to be in their presence for one reason or another. :(

Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of Armenian friends; I don't think all Armenians are like that, and it's not like I'm anti-social (well, maybe I am sometimes, but most of the time I'm not...). :D

Just my $0.02. ;)

Dan

Your attitude is pretentious! Regarding Armenians and yes your British flag is an example of your pretentiousness.

Dan, you keep saying “impressions”, “impressions” well impressions are just that right not enough substance to make real judgmental conclusions. Impressions often change when you get to know people hence your pretentiousness again.Your observations of Armenians are down right mediocre

lol... what the hell are you talking about? why am I pretentious?! I told you I KNOW these people... from the agoump...

And please, don't be judgemental - I am half British, ergo the British flag.

Edit note: I am as proud of being British as I am of being Armenian, and I have every right to put the British OR Armenian flag as my avatar, it's none of your business. Stop being judgemental when you DON'T know me. At least I KNOW those people when I'm judging.

hypocrite, n : a person who professes beliefs and opinions that they do not hold.

I'm not gonna even reply to this. http://www.cs.yorku.ca/~cs213198/dan-shakehead.gif

But I'm assuming that you live in the states or abroad anyway, unless you tell me otherwise. And I'm assuming you're 13 years old. But it's ok, you'll learn.

i live in Sweden and i´m 27years.

bullshit you´r not proud of being Armenian.

Let me tell you something, kiddo, if you hate us Brits so much, why don't you speak your own language and boycott English? Go ahead, no one's holding you back. So stop being a ***** about it and try to have a knowledgeable convo without going ballistic on me just because I have put MY flag on there, because if you continue doing that, I'm not gonna play your game. Understood? Now go back to your corner and stop b****ing about someone who has put his OWN flag as his avatar. As much as I am Armenian, I am British too. And it's Armenians like you who cause me to shake my head in disgust. So grow up, and when you do, come back and talk to me then, because then and ONLY then will I talk to you. I bet I know more Armenian than your patriotic self that thinks Armenians are elite. Well, get over it, we're not. We're just like the rest of them. True, we have our own culture, history, country, but that doesn't make us any different than others. So stop hurling your hayoutioun in my face, because I am as much of an Armenian as you are, probably even more. I play basketball with an Armenian team, and I am proud of being Armenian, and nothing is gonna change that, not you or others who attack me without knowing me. Being a proud Armenian, however, does not imply being blind to our own faults and failings. Being a proud Armenian does not imply attacking other nationalities. Just because my country hasn't been the best in the past doesn't mean I wouldn't be proud of it. I might not agree with the policies of the government, but I am still proud of being British, as I would be of being Armenian even if the Armenian government did something totally wrong.

an Armenian flag in Armenian forum seems more logical

On the contrary. Being in an Armenian forum already implies that I am proud of being an Armenian and don't deny it... however, I'm also proud of the other half, and that's why I've put the British flag. It's not cos I'm pretentious or anything... ;)

Personally, I have no problem with Dan using the British flag as his avatar. And I also see no problem with him being proud of his British heritage. Let's face it, even though many of the evils and catastrophes of modern history were caused by British imperialism, the Brits are a proud and accomplished people, and a Brit has much to be proud of. Sir Isaac Newton was British :) , and where would we be today without him!

But Dan, I think you just sort of got off on the wrong foot here, because of your "observations", which I believe are unfair stereotypes about your own people. You say they are fair because they are true, and again, I cannot accept such broad and overreaching stereotypes about anyone, including my own people.

I wonder if you ever go to British forums and criticize British culture or stereotype the Brits?

if some of my Armenian friends have any other flag than the Armenian flag on the wall i will start fighting with him.

because if somebody says to me that he is proud of being Armenian he must believe in it to.

thank god i don´t have friends like you.

well we live in democracy and you have the rights BUT you don´t have the right to use the British flag and suppose to be proud of ARMENIA.

I WILL NEVER EVER WRITE TO YOU ANYMORE.

Come on that's a bit harsh for Dan showing the british flag in his avatar isn't it? It's not like he has come out "against" the Armenians or the Armenian flag or anything like that. Same goes for US ... I think a person of Armenian decent who is a citizen of US enjoying all the fruits and benefits that this country has to offer, should be perfectly free to throw up a US flag without having to be considered "traitor" to his race!

Dan, for whatever it's worth, I don't think the flag you have in your avatar is ANY problem what so ever. Now all the other stuff and arguments and criticizing etc and ability to have a self-criticizing view at times are different issues ...

By the way, another point I wanted to get at is I don't think it's such a great idea to go live in another country, enjoy all the benefits and freedoms provided by that country, yet erect the flag of another country at any chance one gets ... as if to say "I am above you" ... That is not only completely distasteful, it is also disrespectful to the country you live in.

Are you ever critical of yourself?

I believe I am. ;) I always debate with myself, meaning that I try to put myself in the situation of others dealing with me, as well as seeing it from my viewpoint. :D I don't think anyone can master debate if he/she is unable to defend any side he/she is cast on. :P So yes, I am critical of myself and I see my faults and failings. As the saying goes, ammen mart ir achkin mechi keraneh bedk eh desneh, ourishin achkin pousheh desnelen arach, or something like that... :D My Armenian is not the best, so correct me if I made any grammatical mistakes/errors. :)

Are you referring to me by that? Meaning that I live in Canada and put up both British and Armenian flags instead of the Canadian? <_< Well, for the record, I put up 4 flags, including the Canadian one. So... I don't think I qualify as distasteful. :P Or maybe I do..
