edg
I just moved back to Freso CA from SLC UT and I am starting to learn that many Armenians have been attacked because they look Arabic. I am wondering if it is the same where other HyeForum memebers live. If so, what do you think can be done to prevent it?
Harut
i don't think similar things happened here in LA.there are many Armenians in LA and their identity is pretty clear. also, not too many Armenians look Arabic. so the once who look Arabic feel pretty protected among those who don't [ September 19, 2001: Message edited by: Harut ]
edward demian
I noticed that everywhere I go, I am asked for my ID just to use my credit card.I think that it's the hysteria due to reacent developments.Durind WWII, non Japanese orientals had a real tough time. The people are frustrated. They want to kick some butt. In Anaheim, (large Arabic community)you have cars loaded up with roudy young menndriving through the streets, shouting, yelling, looking for Arabs. The women have to go escorted to the markets. Most Middle Eastern stores are closed. Too bad. The best deal on lamb is with the Halal butchers.I suppose that the outcome of this might result in their women dropping the shakkles of the traditional dress. (the scarf, the chadours, the long plain dresses etc. ) I notice that their men don't wear the shalvars, the turbans etc. I often thought that all that stuff is just cultural opression imposed on the women by their insecure husbands. Keep them plain so no one will show interest kind of mentality.I don't want to hear any lame religious reasonings about this either.
Azat
California Attorney General has reported 70 hate crimes in CA of Arab looking people. For fact I know one Armenian gentleman who owns 3 coffee shops in Bay area is one of those 70. LA County has reported over 30 hate crimes. An Egyptian man was murdered at his convenient store and people feel that it was a hate crime since nothing was stolen. But that has not been proven. gamavor
If some Armenians look like Arabs, then they are Arabs. I'm sure there are many Arabs that will try to pass for Armenians these days, just like many Jews tried to pass for Armenians in 1905 in Southern Russia and Caucasus. Beat them, hung them, crush them.... JOKE! In case, anybody misunderstood!
Paul bunyan
any white trash that attacks Armenians and the Arabs should be taken upon conviction, to the police station parking lot and there beaten across the feet with a bastinado/falaka! Paul bunyan
Gamavor, no I am not an Arab, (with a name like BunYAN?!? you can ask such a thing?) but I feel you can learn a thing or two from just about any culture. instead of coddling these cruds, which is the American way, why not march them out and make'em howl!!!!!! in front of local or national tv news cameras.I read where one of these scum ripped off a muslim woman's tighly wrapped headdress probably hooting and yelling, all the while what next? abduction? humiliation? forcible head shaving,? rape? and murder? the last two crimes are extremely common herein the USA
gamavor
My sentiments toward Arabs come not from American culture but from our personal historical experiences. The difference between them and turks is euphemistic.I asked you weather you are an Arab, because the methods proposed by you reminded me some sheriat law understandings of justice, or rather the turkish way... Juggernaut
Well, considering half the American nation voted for Bush, I can clearly see some of these ignorant people attacking Armenians. In Sydney the day after the bombing a Lebanese Orthodox Church was vandalised......idiots.
elovna
I don't think that talking of 'scum' and 'trash' will do much good. I never thought I would ever hear myself say it, but I do think that the world is very much in need of an mondial administration that will set and strictly keep Law and order on this planet. Azat
Arab Music Tour Canceled Out Of Concern For Musicians' SafetyBy Eric Schumacher-RasmussenDesert Roses and Arabian Rhythms, a festival tour celebrating the diversity of Arab music has been canceled out of concern for the musicians' safety. The tour #151; which was to feature Algerian rai singer Khaled, Egyptian street-pop artist Hakim and Iranian-born singer Andy — was called off on September 11 as Khaled and Hakim awaited flights to New York. The tour was set to begin September 14 in Washington, D.C., with a show in New York two days later, according to a spokesperson for Mondo Melodia, the label that organized the festival. The tour was scheduled to hit 10 U.S. cities. Andy, whose full name is Andy Madadian, lives in Los Angeles and sings in Farsi, Urdu, Armenian and English. "This festival was really for young people, but the idea of Arab musicians and fans partying and celebrating to Arab music might have given some people the wrong message," the spokesperson said, adding that the artists involved were concerned for their safety in light of reports of Arabs being attacked in the United States. The label plans to reschedule the tour for late January or early February. The tour was named after the Sting hit "Desert Rose," which featured rai singer Cheb Mami, who was not on the tour lineup. Paul bunyan
remember what southerns used to do to Blacks for 100 years: the lychings and the yankees would do nothing to stop the "carnival of terror". abductions and terror by mobs usually composed not of white rednecks but of the towns leading citizens, against union organizers, communists, foreigners, anybody the majority of the American electorate didn't like would happen frequently. to prove that America has gone beyond this a head count of these racist hoodlums needs to done and a very public prosecutionof these cruds cuminating in lengthy prison terms needs to done.
