I just understood what you mean. HAHA ... ok that one is pretty easy to disable. Just go to your computer management (right click on my computer and choose manage), then go to "Services and Applications" then "Services" ... find the "Messenger" service and disable it. That should stop those pop-ups! I never get those since I am behind a physical firewall. A software firewall could also probably filter those things out. That mechanism is like a built-in "instant messaging" service in windows. You can send it to anyone on your network (you can even boradcast I think). Azat Posted May 12, 2003 Report Share Posted May 12, 2003 no no no. there weren't any messanger related.there were message boxes with text. one of the first ones i got said "if you see this message, your computer is leaking you ip out". I know it well. Those are windows messenger messages. "net send ipAddress message" Windows messenger was developer to allow sysadmins to send messages to people on the network warning them of upcoming shutdowns and stuff like that, but MS decided to leave the default on for XP. We have several winXP machines here, and we've never had this sort of problem. But, of course, we're running them behind a firewal... Azat Posted May 12, 2003 Report Share Posted May 12, 2003 Domino, it has NOTHING to do with MSN messenger. It is a Windows Messenger service and if you have XP installed it is on by default. Vava it depends on the firewall. Hardware firewalls completely shut it off from outside, but people inside the network can still send messages to each other. Software firewalls usually do not because your actual IP is still visible from outside and it was not initially seen as a spamming mechanism. New patches from Zone and Sygate do block it. People in their own networks at home where their IP is different from outside vs. inside will not get these messages either.  In general it is a good idea to just shut down the messenger service unless you are in a corporate environment. Under the "Startup Type" menu click Manual ;Click OK . Windows 2000 Note: you must have "Administrative rights" on your computer to perform this task. Usually this involves logging on to Windows as Administrator.  Click Start , then click Settings , then Control Panel ;In the Control Panel window, click Administrative Tools , then click Services ;Scroll down to view and click Messenger ;Right-click the highlighted line and then click Properties ;Click the STOP button. Under the "Startup Type" menu click Manual ;Click OK . Windows NT Note: you must have "Administrative rights" on your computer to perform this task. That's really the best thing about Mozilla: it has all the languages of the world in it. You don't need to download and install anything (well, except for Mozilla ).
