Cool Free Software/Utilities

Google also has some translation tools linked from their main page. I would say, you could also take a look at www.worldlingo.com ... they have human translation services which you have to pay for, but also free machine translation which may be helpful. I don't think you should expect much from them either though since most likely they are doing variations of simple word-substitutions.

Adaptec EZ CD and Roxio are the same thing. I have version 4.0 or something like that that does not work for XP. and Roxio charger $49 for the upgrade.

I just downloaded Nero Express the demo version that expires in a month. It works great and I do like it so far. If it works out okay this next month it's only 19 dollars.

I found another free one, but it froze my XP twice. That had not happened for a long time. So it got deleted.

Okay, here is another software that I just cannot believe that it is free.

Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 Beta

As the name says it is from Microsoft and it now only works on XP. Movie Maker 1 is on ME as well, but it is a horrible product. This on the other hand it a great tool for anyone who has a digital camera or a digital camcorder or scans lots of their images in to digital format.

It allows you to do simple things like add music, and credits, transactions(20+), video effects(20+) some very incredible stuff that cost thousands of dollars if you were to use Adobe Premier with the additional plug-ins. And it is SO much easier to use than Premier is. I know I do use Premier once in a while.

This will not replace Premier by any means, but for those of us who have seen and liked iMovie on the iMac this is a great replacement for the Windows platform.

When done you can save your movies in Windows Media Player format, quicktime, mpeg or export it back to your DV camera.

Here is a MS commercial you can watch

A useful site I use:

www.versiontracker.com

Allows you to keep track of your favourite software and alerts you when there are updates. Also has several advanced search tools to help you find that utility that you've been looking for! Links directly to download sites, so that you can try the demo (or in the case of free & share ware - you can download the full version), and you can also access peer reviews.

The link above is for the MAC version, but there are PALM, and Windows versions too.

I hope many will contribute.

(Please don't list any hacked sites or software as this is not what we want)

Here are a couple that I use and can't do without.

Web Album Generator - http://www.ornj.net/software/index.html

Description from site - A tool for creating World Wide Web pages from your digital photos. It's perfect for sharing your personal photos with family and friends!

POW! - http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/n...network/pow.htm

Description from site - With all the cool things about the web (like my website), there's an even greater amount of really lame things, like those popup advertisements from sites like GeoCities and Tripod. After a late night of closing those damn windows, I couldn't take it any more, and AnalogX POW! was born! A simple utility, just run POW! while browsing on the net, and when one of those nasty popups appears, POW! will automatically close it for you... It's that easy! And that's not all... You can configure POW! to close any new popups that you run across, so if it doesn't close them already, you can easily add/remove them at any time. This is an absolute must for anyone who spends any reasonable (or unreasonable) amount of time surfing the web.

You will find MANY other wonderful tools at analogX.com. I probably have 10 of his utilities installed.

Google Toolbar - http://toolbar.google.com/

Description from site - The new Google Toolbar increases your ability to find information from anywhere on the web and takes only seconds to install.

AVG AntiVirus - http://www.grisoft.com

This is one of the best antivirus programs out there and it is free for home users.

Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoft.de/

You will be surprised to find out how much stuff is running on your PC that has been put there to help advertisers show you more appropriate ads and collect information about your computer using habits.

Simtel.net has some cool stuff. They also have a mailing list. I am subscribed to it.

I am not big on any of these HTML editors, but I though that this was great.

My computer has been recently attacked and I am looking to install a firewall. What would you computer whizzes recommend. I was thinking of buying a router, which comes with built in firewall, but I don’t want to spend $80 on that. Is there any freeware that you are familiar with and could recommend me.

But you can't go wrong with that router/gateway idea. A setup like that can block all unwanted incoming packets to your computer ... before they GET to your computer

By the way, if you keep up with the periodic security patches in "Windows Update", your PC will be fairly safe. Unless you are running some sort of server on it, just by setting up things correctly in windows you can be in good shape.

This means not having trivial admin passwords, not sharing any disks, and not running any servers (ftp), etc.

Something that nobody has mentioned yet: You will definitely want to make sure you have a good anti-virus installed, and keep your definitions up-to-date. I use Norton Anti-Virus, and the update feature is pretty transparent and keeps you protected. On the other hand, I've had rotten experiences with their (Norton) firewall. Currently, I'm running ZoneAlarm pro, and I find that it's just fine for my needs (I also have a cheapo Linksys router - which works great! It even allows you to forward ports if you access your machine remotely, very handy!) The router+software firewall combination is a sure bet.

As Sip said - keep up to date on all microsoft patches & critical updates.

One final note: You can install firewalls, spyware and all these protection tools up the wazoo - BUT - YOU are still the user, and if the user ignores the warnings from the above mentioned tools (like my girlfriend, for instance), and opens that mysterious email attachment - well, there's nothing left to protect you. Good luck!

Also you may want to go to Steve Gibson's Internet security site.

Click on "Shields up!" to test your firewall.

zonealarm is probably the most widely known freeware firewall available... there are many positive comments about it, but i've personally had only bad experience with it, but that's mostly because i have BOTH a hardware firewall (router) & software firewall... btw, i personally use norton internet security 2003 & it's the best in my opinion!!! it has tons of additional features: it blocks popup ads, protects from viruses, worms, & trojan-horses (it includes norton antivirus 2003)... it also blocks unsafe email attachements, detects spam email, & blcoks dangerious scripts form running in ur navigator...

Alpha, what OS do you use?

If you are on XP, you can turn on the Windows firewall that is available inside XP. It is not great but will work against most novice hackers(90% of all hackers are Novice kids)

Just like HaYaStAnRuLeS mentioned ZoneAlarm is the most popular out there and it is not bad. It is actually pretty good. I however use another free one from Sygate. I like it better. It will be more then enough to block you from 99.9% of the idiots out there.

You should also download a spyware application like AdAware and scan your machine for these applications that sit there and send info to the outside world without your permission. They too can be hazardous.

Good luck

Got introduced to Arachnophilia today.

http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/

I liked it because it provides you the coding first and is not WYSIWYG. And it colours its tags, so that puts it a bit above conventional pads. From what little exposure I had to it, though, it doesn't have a "find and replace" feature (or maybe its shortcut key is different).

Also, I'm not sure if I've got it from here (probably not), but - TopStyle Lite is an awesome stylesheet editor. Allows you to preview there and then what you're going to come up with.

For the benefit of the public.

I highly recommend you use KazaaLite instead of Kazaa. It's the same as Kazaa minus the annoying popups and the stupid spyware.

Edit: 3/26/2006 ... this post is waaaay too old ... don't use Kazaa. :D
