ALERT! CHER ADOPTED BY TURKISH FATHER

Recommended Posts

Cherilyn Sarkisian, abandoned by her Fresno-born father, John Sarkisian, was later "adopted" by none other than Ahmet Ertegun, who made her what she is today. This son of a Turkish Ambassador to the U.S., whose father stopped the filming of

"40 Days of Musa Dagh" took this young Armenian girl under his wing. Conservative Armenians abandon their own, only to have Turks take over.

I personally haven't met any Armenian who believed Armenians were "incapable of doing such things". However, it is true that the behavior of Cher's father is not at all typical of an Armenian father. I would be the first to say that Armenian parenting has some serious flaws (in addition to wonderful, wonderful overall strengths), but such behavior is simply not a widespread problem; in fact it is quite rare. You are focussing on the wrong problem. Self-flagellation can be put to better use.

Twilight Bark,

In view of Armenian assimilation at a very quick pace, the children being incresingly alienated form their heritage, the Armenian nation being in economic shambles and outmigration from ROA reaching unbelievable proportions, SELF-FLAGELLATION is what our Armenian leadership should be FOCUSING upon.

True. As for the rest of us, we should focus on why we do not produce good leaders. There are cultural reasons for this, starting from the crib. We should also focus on why the few that have the right character and talents do not find (or seek) their way to the top. The trail of ancient and recent history is littered with cultures that became roadkill due to incompetent or corrupt leadership. For too long the Armenians have lived on the line separating the Darwinian winners and losers.

Having said all this, I must emphasize that while realizing there is something wrong is a useful start, hastily attacking any and all things Armenian is counterproductive. The patient needs all the support and nourishment it can get. And the "cure" must make the patient better, not worse. And constantly nagging the patient about his bad health is also not very helpful. In more concrete terms, saying that conservatives should become liberals, that the liberals should get real, that the semi-literate merchants should become intellectuals, that "intellectuals" should get rid of their quotation marks, that bad leaders should become good leaders, that the corrupt bureaucracy should become true civil cervants, that self-serving community leaders should become wiser and more altruistic has a net benefit of zero, including the "benefit" that they make the utterer of those words feel better about himself. Unless the utterer analyzes the reasons behind the said diseases. Even better if one can come up with rational ways to tackle them. Saying that "I just point out the problems, and let others figure it out" is both lazy and disingenuous: someone incapable of spotting the problem is surely not up to the task of analyzing its causes, let alone coming up with a way to fix it.

Twilight Bark,

Just look to this forum and you will see the problem very clearly.

A new mmeber here, who has his own website (A.R.) has a lengthy post about me where he calls my great-grandfather "filth." This is because my great-grandfather fed Turks and Kurds as well as Armenians, the poorer ones for free. Another great-grandfather gladly paid the oppressive taxes hoisted upon thousands of Armenians. How could anyone in Ottoman Turkey have a sucessful business and not deal with Turks?

Recently my late mother befriended an Armenian couple at her senior citizen complex. After this lady met me, she asked my mother why I do not associate with Armenians. She stated that I was one of few Armenian men who had actor quality. My mother told her that I had been viciously attacked in Armenian circles.

There are a lot of things positive about Armenian culture. The secret is to hold on to these things and discard what is destoying us. Do you know how many people here would gladly slit my throat for memely stating the truth that Saroyan was married to a Jewish woman, TWICE!

I think this is a forum where A.R. would be eaten alive if he were to repeat his previous performance. I for one am not sure I want to waste my time on him. Even in the absence of anyone wasting bits and bytes on him, I am sure the moderators are fully capable of handling him if he crosses the line too many times.

On a side note related to the earlier discussion, I hope you understand my point that being "hagarag" is nowhere near enough.

Shirag,

Since I have not read or written in Armenian for over forty years, I will answer you in English. My Armenian at this point is very poor through disuse.

Here in the US there is a comic strip named Pogo. Pogo is a funny looking human-like creature. In my favorite cartoon of him, he is looking in the mirror and states "We have seen the enemy, and he is us!" From what I can understand of your post, you understand this precisely.

I was in armenia for 3 months. I was living with a family two weeks at the end of my stay in Yerevan. The relatives of the family was saying that they hated parskahyes...and that they dispiced beiruta hyes, to my face when we were having dinner.

parskahyes were all donkeys...and beuirtahyes had no sense of manner so on.

The father of the family said to his brother who was spitting out his anger and hostility, that its because your sons wife is a parskahye and u arent fond of her...Yeah -he said...there all stupid...so on so on...

-"We used them as the slaves used the blacks in USA".

I said that it isn't fair to say that all barskahyes are "stupid" because u know someone u dont like!

My family is a barskahye family and he was certainly aware of that and seemed like he was not that fond of me..Thought I am born and raised in Sweden.

Who would like to make friends with such a man i thought?

He seemed to have been "rejected" by a beirutsi...

The thing is, they thought that if you are an armenian they can treat u like dirt if they want to!
