Kazza
I think it's is so good that you can find so many poems, but how frustrated I am, while all are discussing them, that there is no english translation. I would love to learn armenian one day . But where I live there is hardly any opportunity to learn it, and takeing on a project like that also takes time. sob, sob! It is a commitment because I like to do things properly, not just slapdash. That is the state my greek is on and It gets on my nerves when greeks say I am not a "proper" greek because I don't speak it a s if I were born and bred in athens! But, who cares. I am in the middle now of writing some poems myself. One of them is all about the communist rule and the crooked armenian politicians who want to fill their pockets with money, and the other is a about the Ngrorno-Karabagh region. It is about the earthquake and ongoing economic blockade. I am trying to put myself in the shoes of people that it has affected and describe the way I would imagine that they feel. The poetry is not only centering about induviduals because of their ethnicity, or because they happen to be involved in a in a situation just because it is in Armenian /the caucasus but am interested in thinking about people as induviduals, their personalitites, why they thought/said did the things that they did. I am trying to avoid the genocide because I want to concentrate on the many other aspects of armenian history that are not brought up nearly as often. It is important that they are too because so many armenians think they know their history properly because they only focus on the genocide over and over again, and a lot of the time, I think it is counter-productive because a lot of this goes around in the same circles and focuses on hatred, instead of going forward like it should be. At the moment I have got a book which describes the life and times of Genghis Khan. I was reading his leadership of the mongol conquest and I was utterly amazed. The author called him the "great" Genghis Khan in so many places because his armies slayed and conquered thousands with no mercy. Not just our area but in so many other places as well. The good news is he died as he lived. Another thing which I am also interested in is the long history of joined greek-persian history! Cyprus, where my mum comes from, was under persian rule for a long time and ancient Persia and Greece were also heavily involved. As most of you most probably know, Persia and Armenia were heavily involved with each other and still are.

nairi
what do you think about Toumanian's ???????? [harachanq] (not ???????? [Harachanq], but in general context)?does it come from his personal dissatisfaction? or from nation's situation at his time? From @ntir Yerker, Hator 1, by Levon Hakhverdian (not related!!): Halatsanq, apsosanq, harachanq, maqarum` sranq sovorakan barer chen, ayl bar-@ndhanracumner, bar-khtacumner, vor krum en huzakan yev imastayin mets ber ("...barer kan, vor mi amboghj patmutyun en", -- grel e Tumanian@), usti yev hnchum en boloric bardzr: The rest of this part basically says that Tumanian tried to use the word "harachanq" in as many definitions and settings as possible, also to describe society and himself in it. This inevitably means that his dissatifaction comes from both himself as well as how he experienced society. World literature generally reflects on society through reflection of the self. Personal dissatisfaction is a result of the way society is. Why should anyone feel dissatisfied if society is satisfactory? So yes, from this perspective Tumanian's use of the word harachanq is both personal as well as social and even political. The intro to this collection of works is about 18 pages and has a lot of info on all sorts of things Tumanian wrote. If you have this book, do read the intro. It'll give you much more than I'll ever be able to say about this. If that's not enough, I'm sure you can find plenty more secondary reading on this particular subject. If I find something, I'll let you know.

nairi
I love it when poets compare themselves to God Earlier I had quoted Torquata Tasso (16th Century Italian poet) with this: Non merita nome di creatore, se non Iddio ed il Poeta. (No one merits the name of creator, except God and the Poet) Three centuries later, Percy Bysshe Shelley (one of Lord Byron's closest friends -- gotta connect him to Armenians somehow ) quoted Tasso in his essay "A Defence of Poetry", in which he compares a good poet to God. And then there's Toumanian comparing himself to the creator... Inch imanas @steghtsoghi gaghtniqner@ anmekin.- @nger t@vav, irar kapets es ashkharhqum amenqin.
