shiner
The centuries-old story of the Avedis Zildjian Company is rich in cymbalism. Zildjian, the world's #1 maker of cymbals, is also the oldest family-run company in the US. In 1623 Turkey, Armenian alchemist Avedis created an alloy that he used to make cymbals. (A sultan named him "Zildjian," or cymbalsmith.) The company relocated to America in 1929. Traditionally, father passed the secret metallurgical formula to eldest son, but in 1976 Craigie Zildjian (named CEO in 1999) became the first woman employed there. Zildjian commands 70% of the US market and about 60% elsewhere. Zildjian also makes drumsticks and gongs. Craigie's uncle Robert owns rival cymbal-maker Sabian, which also uses the secret formula.
