My friend, my lover...

How does everyone feel about friendships with someone of the opposite sex? Do you think it's realistic at its core? Do you think men and women can be friends? ("when harry met sally", one of my favorite movies of all time--and a surprisingly upbeat one for me since I usually like more somber stuff--comes to mind) Or do you think such friendships are invariably spoiled by the "sex" factor? What happens when people are attracted to their friends? Does a friendship survive? Etc Etc.

Thoughts?

I agree with BTac. An opposite-sex friendship may start out innocent on both sides, but somewhere along the line one is going to "like" the other.

Prior to getting married, I experienced every possible permutation of this. Even ones where both of us eventually liked each other, but not at the same time!

Hey,this is my subject...I have a perfect friend(she's my best friend for years). We both date with other people but it doesn't effect our relationship.Sex is the ''little'' secret of our friendship between me and her,it doesn't spoil anything.

It just doesn't work! That's why a reputable forum such as this one is a great place to make friends.

If a man is intrested in a female friend they can be extremely possessive and jealous and visa versa. I for one, would not cause any trouble for a male friend, even if I was intrested in him, if he liked a girl.

It's not right. Who knows, you could have a male(female) friend, spreading rumours about you, because they hope to have you all to themselves. HMMM. Friend or foe?

Nope! Doesn't work.

Lovers do become friends, happens alot (which I disagree with), but it doesn't work the oposite. Best thing is move on and take the memories. Don't be in touch at all, it will hurt to hear the other one moved-on. And you, yourself don't want to cause any pain. Then they get into the challange, "how come I lost her, bla bla bla.." They start persuing you, it becomes a mess. Eaither start with lover intention, or don't spend too much time with the person, if you are not interested in OTHER ways.

DON'T MISLEAD!

I don't believe lovers can be friends as friends can't be lovers....I experienced both and none happened for me.

Also i don't believe that 'inner beauty' tales. If i don't get attracted by a woman's 'outer' beauty i don't even try to examine her 'inner' one.To be honest who would???

OK, let's get back to the topic.

There was a time when I strongly believed in male-female friendships. Experience tought me otherwise. I was proven wrong several time and eventually gave up on the idea. In most cases the friendship is "ruined" by the male I put ruined in quotes because in some cases the friendship can turn to a beautiful romantic relationship and they will live "happily ever after." But this does not happen too often. The chances are very slim ... a chance I (personally) am not willing to take. I have seen too many friendships end because of spur of the moment decisions.

Does this mean you should not be friends with members of the opposite sex? Far from it. You should try to have as many as possible. BUT ... keep in mind that you can't be "best buddies" and you need to draw the line somewhere, keep a distance. Such friendships can be complicated because you may want to be closer with that person, open up and ask for advice but that may not always be a wise thing to do. The closer you get to someone, the more affection that person developes. And if the feeling is not mutual you have a problem.

Let me pose another question.

Do you think it's possible to remain friends after a break-up? How efficient is it? What is the purpose?

  • 1 year later...

This topic cracks me up because of the two views.

#1 the idealist,If you love something set it free.

If it returns it's yours.

#2The obsesive person,If you love something set it free.

If it doesnt return, hunt it down and kill it so no one else can have it.

Well, since this topic is alive again after a year ...

You can be friends with Jesus, go on a date with Jesus, and even take a shower with Jesus ... You don't believe me? Just check this out.

That guy is freaking hillarious. I can't believe how seriously people take him ... the best part is reading his "mail bag" section with some samples of the kinds of emails he gets!!!!

Usually(I don't want to say always as there are always exceptions to the rule) there is one thing men look for in a woman and it is not friendship.

Friendship after a break up from mans perspective would be only for a the slim chance that she may sleep with him again.
