This topic is comprised of pages: 1 2 Author Topic: The Soccer World Cup Thread Juggernaut Member Member # 351 posted November 27, 2001 02:49 AM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------And ladies and gents here are the final 32 qualifiersFrom Asia: Korea Republic, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia From Africa: South Africa, Cameroon, Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria From South America: Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay From North and Central America: Costa Rica, United States, Mexico From Europe: France, Poland, Sweden, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Croatia, Italy, England, Slovenia, Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Ireland I think they are in order in qualifications. The groups are being decided next week I think, and I'll post them when they come up. Its a shame Holland didnt make it (their my favourites after France of course ). The other strong teams that missed out include: Yugoslavia, Check Republic, and Romania. Hopefully France will win again, but the form of their gollie (Barthez) leaves something to be desired, and they still dont have a SOLID striker up-front. I think the hosts (Korea and Japan) will do relativelly well, escpessially Japan. Posts your thoughts here, and in exactly 15 min I'll be watching the UEFA champs Bayern Munich take on South American champs Boca Juniors to decide the best club of the world. I doubts they'll make it past the 1st round, unless their in a weak group. Bayern was not in form and Boca were missing many players through injury. Bayern won 1-0 in extra time after Boca was reduced to 10 men just before half time (Bayern was playing better overall). I didnt see the goal cause I went at sleep after full-time (thats how boring it was). On a better note the groups have been decided and I am now going to post them according to what I think they will come in their particular group (based on performance in qualifications and personal 'hunch' ) Group A - France should top this one, though Denmark is a moderate threat. Uruguay is descent though I doubt they will be in top two. Senegal last. 1. France 2. Denmark 3. Uruguay4. Senegal Group B - Spain will top this one, but the next three spots are difficult to predict, though both Paraguay or Slovenia should dominate South Africa 1. Spain2. Paraguay3. Slovenia4. South Africa Group C - Despite difficulties in qualifications, I think Brazil will go a long way in this world cup and should top their group. Costa Rica should prove a worthy adversary (2nd), with Turkey and China filling 3rd and 4th. 1. Brazil2. Costa Rica3. Turkey4. China Group D - Both Poland and Portugal have been playing relativelly well, either will deffinitelly top this group. US should edge out the hosts (S. Korea). 1. Portugal2. Poland3. US4. Korea Group E - Germany is consistent in performance and will top this group, Ireland should be good enough to come second. 3rd place being contested by Saudi Arabia and Cameroon 1. Germany2. Saudi Arabia Group F - The group of death, difficult to predict this one with two very good teams (Argentina and England), one good team (Sweden) and an unpredictable wild-card (Nigeria). Though after all the matches have been played it is most likelly that it should look as follows. 1. Argentina2. England3. Sweden4. Nigeria Group G - Another strong group, also will be unpredictable, though a conservative person (like myself) will put them as follows, except I think Ecuador should do better than Mexico. 1. It could have been but the team is not yet at full speed. I do not agree with Juggernaut, Turkey is not a good team. Rivaldo´s attitude was deplorable...but Turkey deserved the two players sent off. My opinion on how they played is based on watching the match, nothing else. They are not a good team. Haven't had the time to watch any matches yet this go 'round. World Cup is a great concept IMO (except for the hooliganism that the fans of some countries display). I'm glad to see the US doing well (1 game)...and a good showing would be a good thing for the sport in this country...though i don't think it will ever rival the big 3 here (or 4...if you include hockey). Personnaly I love the sport of basketball - but the pro game in the US often turns me off (& its a freak show). Baseball (the [primadonna/overpayed} players in particular) really piss me off..used to be a big fan...can't generate the enthusiam any more...its great to go out and see a game now & again though - very laid back and (almost) intellectual when you really get into it...too bad the players are such a seholes. US football rocks IMO! What can I say - Its the glory of it all.... I agree with Boghos. I see no reason why anyone should consider the Turkish national team as the "enemy" - this is silly. They should be respected for the atheletes that they are and for the accomplishment just to get into the cup. More power to them I say. It speaks to our maturity to be able to actually root for the Turkish team (or at least not root against them just because they are Turks). (and if you look at the players you can even see the slav & Greek etc in them...think about it...in some way they are "us" in a sense...) Could you ever immagine Turks rooting for an Armenian team? I thought Turkey played consistently throughout the tournament, but Brazil has improved markedly, Turkey didnt have a chance. They only created ONE real opportunity in the whole match, that was the only time i think their striker (and captain, Sukur) managed to touch the ball inside the Brazil penalty area. In sixth position Germany-76 (European champion) with Holland-88 (European champion). In eighth position England-66. Argentina-78 and Argentina-86 may be put in the top ten, but I need some studies to see if Argentina-86 deserves really the title or it's the genious of one man (Maradona) which gave them the title. And the football of the 70's is far more tactical than now. Nowadays, all is on the strength. I've already talked about that, remember.Germany is playing as France-98 which was a defensive football. In 1998, France won because it was the less weakest team. Most of their goals were scored by their defense or midfield players.Today, Brazil looks more like Brazil-70 which was and is the best football ever. That's why I told you, in my recent messages, that Ararat-73 (not me, the golden Armenian team in 1973) was playing as Brazil-70. I'll tell you more about that, but let me tell you now that Turks were playing as Ararat-73 (unfortunately). Analysis and details later.As for Korea, don't forget that their 2 best defender didn't play against Turkey and we all saw the big defensive faults they commited.Finally, Germany has not a very good defense, but a correct defense. They aren't as good as you say, because of many many saves made by Oliver Kahn. Their keeper is good, OK, but not their defense.Dear Hovsep, I think Brazil will have many occasions and Kahn will save them all but one. And that will be enough (ha ha ha). In one condition. Oliver Kahn got his medicine after publicly challenging Brazil. I hope this brings about an improvement in the country's soccer structure. Johan Cruijff was on Dutch tv from Spain to give comments. He was talking about the changes that soccer is going through. He said that the sport is being influenced too much by certain pressures so that the 'real' soccer is kind of disappearing. He feels that amongst others the Brasil team has so much more quality to show than it is actually showing and he regrets these general developments in soccer very much. Also Renaldo's history of injuries was mentioned and they all had great admiration for his endurance and the fact that he is still 'on the ball'. With great respect was said that: "Even a Renaldo playing at 75% percent of his capabilities is not real match for any soccer player." Accelerated Posted June 30, 2002 Report Share Posted June 30, 2002 The Final turned out as I had suspected, Germany played their best in this tournament, I think Brazil played a little better against England and Turkey, but they nevertheless managed to totally outclass the opponent. As I had predicted without Ballack, Oliver Neuville would decide the game for the Germans, and he almost did from a long range free kick. PS: Ronaldos 'haircut' is terrible, the guys I was with were drunk and we named him "pubie", because his haircut looked like the pubic hair of a women. LOL. I was only wondering why he chose to have that 'triangle' exactly there and the only reason I could come up with is that it is the spot were men usually start to get bold. So maybe he wanted to show that he didn't have his head shaved because he is starting to lose it (there). I think he's cute regardless of whatever haircut. I saw him in an interview where he was 'explaining' in Dutch what soccer means to him: "Soccer is my life, without it I don't have one." A lot of men who are starting to get bold these days decide to shave whatever is left instead of putting a toupet on the bold spot.
