Armenia: The Betrayed, will be broadcast on Sunday 26 January 2003 on BBC Two at 1915 GMT

In a special Correspondent to coincide with Holocaust memorial week, Fergal Keane investigates how a terrible slaughter, three quarters of a century ago, has returned to haunt the relationship between Turkey and its western allies.

For decades the Armenian people have campaigned to have the killings of hundreds of thousands of their forefathers in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 recognised as genocide.

But there has been an equally determined campaign by Turkey to deny genocide with threats of reprisals against any country which uses the word to describe the slaughter.

Now as the United States steps up its efforts to win Ankara's support in any conflict with Iraq Correspondent reveals new Turkish pressures.

Threats to withdraw military bases have forced the American Congress to abandon legislation which would have used the all important term, "genocide".

The programme also discloses how President George W Bush and his predecessor Bill Clinton both broke promises to the Armenian community that they would recognise genocide.

Talking to Armenian survivors, Turkish officials and key political figures in the United States Correspondent investigates a story of terrible slaughter, political intrigue and a people betrayed.

Producer: James Miller

Reporter: Fergal Keane

Editor: Karen O'Connor

Deputy Editor: David Belton

Online Producer: Andrew Jeffrey

There probably is a way to watch it on the internet. In the meantime view these comments majority of which are by Turks from Turkey.

I did post a comment this morning and for some reason its not recorded. I guess they didn't like what I wrote or maybe it'll be there later on. I'll keep checking.

I have a friend who gets BBC World but the program is not listed for tomorrow. He mentioned that he's seen the Correspondent before. If that's the case, they may show it some other time.

I'm sure they've received a FLOOD of emails abour this from both sides. I too, have submitted my comments. Let's just hope that the facts are reported accurately in the documentary.

I watched it and, if I have the time, I'll give some comments on it in a day or so once I rewatch it and make notes.

But, basically, for a short, one-off TV documentary it was just about as good as I expected it to be: it was not particularly original, said nothing new, had the usual gross simplifications and generalisations you get with such things, plus the occasional glaring falsehood, plus the feeling that the persons making it don't know that much about the subject. And (no surprises here) all Armenians will praise it, most Turks will crudely attack it, the rest of us will just ignore it.

Interesting. The very typical Turksih response - can't they understand how this perpetuates negative attitudes held against them?

Anyway - I am waiting for this documentary to be aired in the US. Eventually I assume...

Here are the comments I just submitted:

Imagine if you had aired a program concerning the Holocaust and Germans responded with counter arguments and denials. These Turks are living in a dream world of their own making. They have not had to face up to the crimes of their forefathers and their society is not mature enough to do so unless forced. Contrary to these spurious claims there is a tremendous amount of eyewitness evidence proving these crimes. Additionally, right after the war the Turks themselves tried and convicted many of the perpetrators prior to Ataturk launching a new round of massacres. The Turks here only repeat their governments spurious propaganda of the time that was trumpeted without any truth or evidence - where any Armenian resistance to massacre was counted as a massive uprising against Ottoman Turkish rule. These untruths were used to fire up the masses against the Armenians who were innocent victims of tragic time and circumstance. Even accounts of the german and Austrian allies to the Turks during the war prove that there was no Armenian uprising and that what occured was a deliberate genocidal slaughter of the nature and scale of the Holocaust of WW2.

Er, but how can you justify posting comments about a TV program you have not seen?

Although, I bet I would be justified in asking the same question to probably most of the Turks and Armenians who have sent their comments - barely 1 in 100 will have actually seen the documentary. Are they all wanabe Pavlov dogs? They just have to hear of the existance of a program about the Armenian Genocide and, depending on their ethnicity, they automatically reach for the keyboard and drool with pleasure or howl madly with anger. Sometimes it is best to say nothing. That's what I feel anyway, and the comments accepted so far do make pretty dismal reading.

Sorry, I just re-read what I had written, so I should make it clear that I wasn't actually saying your comments were just drool! Your comments make sense, but they are not specifically about the TV program in question, not could they be since you have not seen it.

I have to disagree with this.

If the BBC broadcasts a program and publishes articles that concern us directly, it’s our duty to write our comments and develop on our ideas.

Turks (viewers or not) are doing it. They use this great opportunity to spread their filth. It’s a three-steps process:

1) Those are allegations.

2) Armenians betrayed Turks, so we simply had to take care of them.

3) Actually, it’s Armenians who genocided the peace-loving Turks.

That’s called the “reversed genocide” theory.

We know all this is untrue, but the European viewer doesn’t know. Therefore, we need to teach them by writing our comments, in large numbers.

You know, “silence means acceptance.”

That’s what I think.

PS: Imagine for a moment that you were a Jew, and that Nazies are aloud to go live on a national network to say that the Holocaust never happened, that, actually Jews have slaughtered Germans during WWII.! How would you feel about it? Wouldn’t you react, strongly?

Well, that’s exactly how we all should feel after reading some of the BBC viewers comments.

I just imagined that I was a Jew and that Nazies were allowed to go live on a national network to say that the Holocaust never happened, that, actually Jews have slaughtered Germans during WWII! It pissed the hell out of me and I want to react very strongly.

The problem is that now I want to go back to my Armenian state of mind but I am still so pissed off on Germans that I just can't understand how can Armenians compare the Holocaust with their so-called Genocide.

Sorry, it won't be in a day or so, I have rewatched it and made notes but I don't just now have the time to write anything, and I will be travelling for the next 2 weeks.

But, rewatching it has reinforced my bad opinions of it - the title "Betrayed" is certainly an apt one: since this "documentary" has betrayed almost every good aspect of historical research. It is a piece of junk TV - produced only to fill a gap in Blair's contemptable "Holocaust Memorial Day" and make it less like a "Zionist Propaganda Day".

BBC 2 shows documentary on Armenian genocideAzg web site, Yerevan13 Feb 03

The BBC documentary on Armenian genocide "Armenia: The Betrayed",

originally broadcast on Sunday 26 January on BBC 2, will be presented

at Glendale Public Library on 22 February.

The British-made documentary is a part of the growing pressure on

the British government to recognize the Armenian genocide. Reporter

Fergal Keane "investigates how a terrible slaughter, three quarters of

a century ago, has returned to haunt the relationship between Turkey

and its western allies".

The presentation, organized jointly by the Gomidas Institute, Abril

Books and Sterndale Classics, also serves to introduce to the US,

London-based Sterndale Classics presented by Ara Sarafian and Hilmar

Kaiser. Sterndale Classics is the latest development in providing

academic underpinnings to the Armenian genocide debate in Great

Britain. Both Sarafian and Kaiser have been involved in British

efforts for the recognition of the Armenian genocide.
