Zartonk Posted October 5, 2010 Report Share Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) “Political provocation”: Echmiadzin condemns Turks prayer at Armenian Church The Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, has declared an Islamic prayer service (“namaz”) held in the Armenian cathedral of Ani, in present-day Turkey, a “political provocation.” Turkey’s main oppositional party organized the October 1 event at Holy Virgin Cathedral, in reaction to a Christian service held in Armenian Surb Khach (Holy Cross) Church on Aghtamar Island, Van, on September 19. Meanwhile, on September 30, Turkish authorities erected a cross on the dome of Surb Khach, even though the day before the holy mass they had announced that they could not erect the cross in order not to harm the dome of the church, making many Armenians refuse participating in the liturgy. Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin considers it to be categorically unacceptable to allow Muslim prayer in Christian sacred places “especially when those having rights for Christian heritage are banned to pray in their churches.” “This step is a political provocation and has nothing in common with spiritual and pious feelings and religious freedom and rights. It is also an attempt to deny the Armenian origin of the Cathedral of Ani that was deprived of prayers as a result of the Armenian Genocide,” the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin’s statement says. Samvel Karapetian, Armenian historian, researcher, author and architecture expert specializing in the study of historical monuments, says that the last liturgy was held in Cathedral of Ani in 1920. The cathedral, which is considered to be one of the jewels of the medieval Armenian architecture, was built in 989-1001. Artak Shakaryan, specialist in Turkish studies, believes that the namaz in Ani is a domestic ploy, aiming to gain the electorate’s sympathy.
