'We don’t have sea, oil, gas reserves, but we have heroic nation' – Defense Min. address to Diaspora

1030841.jpg 14:05, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Ministry of Defense has addressed the Armenian worldwide Diaspora representatives who are actively contacting them and asking how they can help amid the ongoing Azeri attacks.

Defense Ministry representative Artsrun Hovhannisyan released a video, addressing the Diaspora Armenians.

“We don’t have oil and gas reserves, we have young people who don’t spare their lives for their country and you are making heroic deeds. We don’t have sea, but we have a heroic nation keeping our rear strong. Unlike the adversary, we don’t have a population of 10,000,000, but we have a population of 10,000,000 all around the world, we have the Diaspora. This address of mine is directed not simply to 10,000,000 Armenians, but to 10,000,000 warriors, 10,000,000 winners who don’t spare anything. I want each of you to feel like a fighter as we do, I want each of you to enter your own trench and wage your battle,” Hovhannisyan said.

He said he is receiving thousands of letters each day from Diaspora Armenians who are asking how to help and what to send.

Hovhannisyan urged the Armenians around the world to make donations only through the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund at himnadram.org, or armeniafund.org from US territory.

“I personally guarantee that any donation made to the fund serves its purpose multiple times more effectively,” he added.

France affirms that Azerbaijan started the fighting in Karabakh

1030876.jpg 17:25, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has affirmed that Azerbaijan was the one who initiated the ongoing fighting in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone.

“The Karabakh conflict is very serious now, and that is why our political unity is also very strong. The OSCE MG Co-Chairs have issued a joint statement calling upon the parties for a ceasefire because there are numerous civilian casualties,” the French FM said at the French parliament’s foreign affairs committee. He firmly stressed that it was Azerbaijan who launched the attack.

The French FM said the sides must be interested in establishing ceasefire without preconditions.

“You can’t say “we want ceasefire, but….”, this won’t happen. Hostilities halt, negotiations begin, in order for them to achieve agreement around a specific situation that will enable the sides to live normally,” he said, reminding about Azerbaijan’s precondition voiced days earlier.

Jean-Yves Le Drian had earlier announced that Turkey has interfered from the Azeri side in the Nagorno Karabakh military operations, and threatens to internationalize the conflict.

Azeri forces again strike Shushi Cathedral, bombard Stepanakert City

1030880.jpg 17:41, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani forces are again bombarding Stepanakert City and the town of Shushi in Artsakh, and the heavily damaged Holy Savior (Ghazanchetsots) Cathedral was again hit.

Artsakh Public Radio Director Ani Minasyan told ARMENPRESS that the air raid sirens in Stepanakert City are activated non-stop amid the Azeri strikes on civilians.

“One after another, they are striking from the morning on. The air raid siren doesn’t stop. They bombarded minutes ago again,” Minasyan said.

Artsakh presidential foreign affairs advisor Davit Babayan said the Azeri forces delivered another strike on the Holy Savior (Ghazanchetsots) Cathedral in Shushi.

“They again targeted Ghazanchetsots. This entirely fits in their style, because this is genocidal policy and a cultural genocide, because targeting a church is nothing else than targeting the Armenian value system,” he said.

Ghazanchetsots is the seat of the Diocese of Artsakh of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The cathedral suffered the first Azeri rocket strike earlier on October 8.

Dutch parliament adopts resolution condemning Turkey’s militaristic rhetoric

1030889.jpg 18:16, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The parliament of the Netherlands has adopted a resolution, urging the Government to condemn Turkey’s militaristic rhetoric that supports Azerbaijan fighting against Artsakh, ARMENPRESS reports the resolution was initiated by Sadet Karabulut, member of the Social Party of the Netherlands.

Given that the military operations have again flared up with great intensity in Nagorno Karabakh and that Turkey encourages Azerbaijan with its militaristic rhetoric to continue the war, the parliament urges the Government to condemn Turkey’s militaristic rhetoric and call on Turkey in the sidelines of the EU to make efforts for ceasefire and negotiations.

Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey , unleashed war against Artsakh on September 27. Turkey, in addition to various types of assistance to Azerbaijan, including using Turkish air force against Artsakh and Armenia, has also deployed thousands of mercenaries and terrorists from Syria in Azerbaijan to fight against Artsakh.

So far the Armenian side has reported 320 casualties among the military and 21 civilians, Azerbaijan’s manpower losses are nearly 4000, which includes both servicemen from the regular Azerbaijani army and terrorists.

President of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunyan called for an new coalition against international terrorism on October 6.

Azerbaijan’s brazen speculation – denial of the attack against Ghazanchetsots Cathedral vs. facts

1030904.jpg 19:52, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. Ghazanchetsots Holy Savior Cathedral of Shushi town of Artsakh appeared under Azerbaijani strikes twice on October 8. Following the 1st strike, when the Azerbaijani military leadership understood that its crime against civilization will receive an international reaction, hurried to deny any links with it. But hours later the strikes again took place, unfortunately injuring international journalists, who were there to cover that unexplainable hate crime.

The Azerbaijani side is trying to mislead the international community, saying that they have not bombed Ghazanchetsots Holy Savior Cathedral.

Of course, lies, fake news and overt manipulations of the Azerbaijani officials do not surprise anyone in the recent period.

It’s important for us to expose this lie, since it’s a crime against civilization.

Facts:

  1. Azerbaijan carried out strikes against Ghazanchetsots Cathedral of Shushi and the published materials prove it.

sh3.jpg

sh4.jpg

sh5.jpg

sh6.jpg

sh1.jpg

sh2.jpg

  1. Following the strikes the Azerbaijani defense ministry announces that it has not targeted Ghazanchetsots Cathedral , but again strikes it minutes after the announcement.

A number of journalists were injured as a result of the Azerbaijani strikes against the Cathedral. One of them, a Russian reporter, is in critical situation and is undergoing surgery.

Reactions:

  1. Primate of the Artsakh Diocese, His Holiness Pargev. ‘’They are striking our spiritual values, despite the fact that we renovate Mosques. This is the handwriting of the ‘’Islamic State’’.
  2. Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. ‘’Condemning the act and assessing it as an act of extreme religious intolerance, Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin addresses the Pastors of churches, the international community and organizations, inter-church and inter-religious organizations to raise a decisive voice for the sake of stopping the bloodshed, protection of the right of the people of Artsakh to free and independent life and unconditional preservation of ancient religious-cultural heritage’’.
  3. Syrian-Russian journalist Abbas Juma. ‘’It’s an extremely important church for all Armenians. Of course, I greatly regret that this conflict starts to acquire religious nature. Azerbaijanis gave it a religious nature long ago and I can see it from the rhetoric in the social media. Many in Azerbaijan perceive it as a fight for the sake of Islam’’.

Azerbaijan’s brazen speculation

The first announcement of the Azerbaijani side attempted to insinuate that probably it was the Armenian armed forces that struck the Cathedral. Without trying to understand the ridicule of the announcement, let’s see some facts.

Capital of Artsakh Stepanakert was being heavily bombed from Shushi in 1992. The Azerbaijanis kept their ammunition in Ghazanchetsots Holy Savior Cathedral .

Bellow is the footage of the 1st Lord's Prayer at Ghazanchetsots Cathedral following the liberation of Shushi.

The boxes full of ammunition can be seen in the footage. Their kept the ammunition in the Cathedral because they knew that Armenians would never strike their own church and that’s why this wwas the safest place for them.

Hero of Artsakh, Commander of Shushi liberation operation Arkadi Ter-Tadevosyan famous as Kamandos assessed the October 8 strike of Azerbaijani army as an act of a beast, atrocity.

‘’ Ghazanchetsots Holy Savior Cathedral of Shushi is the symbol of Shushi, it’s our belief. When we were kept under fire from Shushi in 1990s, we were looking at that town with great love. What the adversary is doing, is an act of a beast. When peace come, we will again restore it’’, Komandos said.

About the Cathedral

Ghazanchetsots Holy Savior Cathedral of Shushi is an exclusive historical, cultural and spiritual heritage for South Caucasus.

This Church is the center of Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It was built in 1868-1887. After Gandzasar, it’s Artsakh’s second most important spiritual center.

7 UAVs downed in the Republic of Armenia – MoD

1030926.jpg 23:01, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian air defense units destroyed 7 Azerbaijani UAVs in the territory of the Republic of Armenia, Vardenis region, ARMENPRESS reports spokesperson of MoD Armenia Shushan Stepanyan wrote on her Facebook page.

She added that it’s still unclear what kind of UAVs they were. Works are underway to clarify.

The Azerbaijani side has violated the Armenian air space several times since it waged war against Artsakh on September 27. A civilian from Vardenis has been killed by a drone, and a bus was destroyed (No one was inside). On September 29 a Turkish F-16 warplane took off from Ganja military airport and downed an Armenian SU-25 jet in the Armenian air space. Russian reporter in critical situation, witnesses say drone flying over the Church before striking

1030925.jpg 22:56, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The situation of one of the tree Russian reporters injured at Shushi’s Ghazanchetsots Church is critical, ARMENPRESS was informed from the Facebook page of the Human Rights Defender’s Office of Artsakh.

The reporters were in Ghazanchetsots Church to cover the first Azerbaijani strike against the Church, when they bombed for the second time.

‘’Different citizens and reporters who witnessed the incident say that the strike was followed by an UAV flying over the church for a while, which a bit later struck the church. These facts show that it was visible for the Azerbaijani armed forces that they were striking the church and that there were reporters with badges inside. Therefore, there are no doubts that Azerbaijan deliberately carried out a targeted strike against the reporters and the church. Moreover, fact-finding works showed that the Azerbaijani armed forces also carried out strikes nearby Shushi’s Mosque’’, reads the statement of the Human Rights Defender’s Office.

Strongly condemning the deliberate targeting of reporters and the church by Azerbaijan, the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh assesses it as a war crime and crime against humanity. The Defender urges international human rights organizations to give adequate assessment to the incident and take measures for punishing those responsible.

A number of reporters were injured on October 8 during the bombing of Shushi’s Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, one of them, a Russian journalist, is in critical situation. Doctors of Artsakh are sparing no efforts to save his life.

Earlier two French reporters of Le-Monde had been injured in Martakert. One of them was in critical situation, but doctors of Artsakh were able to save his life.

Azerbaijani aggression against Artsakh and Armenia has resulted in 22 civilian victims. Artsakh’s major cities and towns have been under heavy bombardment for days.

Turkey overtly supports Azerbaijan’s aggression. Thousands of jihadist terrorists have been deployed by Turkey in Azerbaijan to fight against Artsakh.

French reporter thanks everyone for sparing no efforts to save his life after Azerbaijani bombing

1030933.jpg 23:47, 8 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8, ARMENPRESS. French reporter of Le-Monde Allan Kaval , who was critically injured by Azerbaijani bombing of Martuni city, presented details of the incident and thanked everyone who had a contribution to saving his life. ARMENPRESS reports Allan Kaval wrote on his Facebook page that on October 1 together with his colleague reporter Hermine Virabyan, photo journalist Rafael Yaghobzadeh were doing their professional job in Martuni, a town in Artsakh not far away from the contact line, when Azerbaijan started the bombardment of the town.

‘’It was midday and walking in a street we suddenly heard the voice of “Grad’’ missiles fired from Azerbaijani positions in our direction. They were bombing the city and fire and pieces of metal were dropping on us like rain. Grisha Narinyan, an employee at Martuni city hall, who was showing us the places of previous attacks, died. He was 28 years old. I am thinking about him and his family every day. Grisha died, since he wanted the world to hear about the sufferings of his people. May he rest in peace with the three other civilians killed in that bombing’’, he wrote.

‘’My colleague Hermine, whom I greatly appreciate, fortunately was able to avoid injuries. If I understand properly, dozens of fragments had appeared inside my body’’, he wrote, adding that he is in the stage of recovery.

‘’But I would be unable to write all this if there were not the people who save me in Martuni, Stepanakert, Yerevan and Paris. Some of them are famous, some are my friends, some were people whom I never knew. Among them there were residents of Martuni, who played a decisive role in the first minutes trying to take us to a safe place. I want to also thank my colleague reporters, who took me from there to the hospital of the town. I want to thank also my other colleagues who were there and informed Paris about the situation. I am particularly thankful to Hermine and Regis Gente. I want to thank the entire medical staff of Martuni hospital who allocated their time to save the lives of two foreigners at a time when their town was being bombed. I want to thank the people who took me from Martuni to Stepanakert hospital with an old-fashioned ambulance by a difficult-to-pass road. I know how much efforts the doctors of Stepanakert made for saving my life. I haven’t had time to learn their names yet, but I am deeply grateful to each of them. I am also deeply grateful to the authorities of Nagorno Karabakh, Armenia and France, who ensured our transportation by a helicopter to Yerevan. Of course, all this would be impossible without the role of the French President Macron, who publicly spoke about our case and did impossible to take us out, also without Foreign Minister of France Jean-Yves Le Drian’’, French reporter of Le-Monde Allan Kaval wrote.

Earlier today a Russian reporter was critically injured by Azerbaijani bombing in another town of Artsakh, Shushi. He, together with his colleague reporters was covering the consequences of an Azerbaijani strike against famous Ghazanchetsots Church, when the church was again bombed. The doctors are still struggling for his life.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 9, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister expects France to recognize the independence of Nagorno Karabakh, ARMENPRESS reports Pashinyan told Tv5Monde.

‘’I want to emphasize the satisfaction of the Armenian people, Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh for the sincere, truth-based positions of the French President. I can say that I expect the French President, France to recognize the independence of Nagorno Karabakh, because today there is no other option to solve the concerns raised by Emmanuel Macron (but the recognition), because this can lead to a huge humanitarian disaster, but also this can spread its terroristic waves in our region in the larger sense. And of course, this is a direct threat to the global security, given the factor and policy of Turkey. Facebook has cracked down on a massive network of fake activity connected to Azerbaijan’s ruling party. The site has removed more than 1,000 accounts and close to 8,000 pages.

Weeks after firing the whistleblower who called for Facebook to take action against the fake users, Facebook removed the troll farm connected to Azerbaijan’s President.

“This network appeared to engage individuals in Azerbaijan to manage Pages with the sole purpose of leaving supportive and critical commentary on Pages of international and local media, public figures including opposition and the ruling party of Azerbaijan, to create a perception of wide-spread criticism of some views and wide-spread support of others,” said Nathaniel Gleicher, head of Facebook security policy.

In an explosive internal memo obtained by BuzzFeed News, Sophie Zhang said Facebook was ignoring manipulation of its platforms by corrupt political parties and heads of government.

In Azerbaijan, Zhang found a large network of inauthentic accounts used to attack opponents of President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and his ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

“This network posted primarily in Azerbaijani, and also in Russian and English. Their comments frequently touched on local and regional news and events, politics, government policies, tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Armenia’s actions during past escalations in Nagorno-Karabakh, praise of President Ilham Aliyev and the New Azerbaijani Party, criticism of the opposition party and leaders accusing them of treason, and denials of human rights abuse allegations in Azerbaijan,” Gleicher said.

‘We are Prepared to Recognize Artsakh,’ Schiff Tells Armenia’s Ambassador

October 8, 2020

Rep. Adam Schiff

“I believe the United States should make clear to Azerbaijan and Turkey that if they persist in this violence instead of embracing a peaceful settlement of the conflict, we are prepared to recognize the Republic of Artsakh as an independent nation,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) pledging to work with the international community to “achieve the same.”

Schiff made the statement during a conversation he had on Thursday with Armenia’s Ambassador to the United States Varuzhan Nersesyan about the continuing conflict in Artsakh.

“We discussed Azerbaijan’s ongoing military campaign, aided and abetted by Turkey and the foreign fighters it is bringing in from Syria, and which has killed hundreds and displaced up to half of the civilian population of Artsakh. We also discussed Azerbaijan’s deliberate bombing of a historic Armenian Church, the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, in the city of Shushi,” Schiff said.

“For decades, through the OSCE Minsk Group, the United States has supported a peaceful, democratic, and negotiated resolution to the dispute surrounding Nagorno Karabakh. We have persisted in this policy even as Azerbaijan launched countless assaults and as their leadership frequently threatened war to redraw the line of contact by force,” added Schiff.”

“Presidents Aliyev and Erdogan must understand that they cannot resolve a decades long border dispute though the indiscriminate use of force against civilians, and the United States will not stand idly by as they attempt to do so. The only resolution of this dispute can be through negotiations, not raining artillery and bombs on Armenian civilians,” said Schiff.

Schiff urged decisive action by the Trump Administration in an interview on Wednesday with Asbarez Editor Ara Khachatourian over Zoom, saying the White House should condemn Ankara and Baku for threatening regional stability and security.

Since Azerbaijan began indiscriminately bombing Artsakh on September 27, Schiff has joined House and Senate leaders in calling on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cut U.S. military assistance to Azerbaijan and imposing sanctions against Turkey for its unequivocal support for Baku’s military aggression and destructive interference in the Karabakh conflict.

He has also co-authored, along with Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) legislation to condemn Azerbaijan and Turkey for their military aggression against Artsakh and Armenia.

MEDIA RELEASE

John Alexander MP in Australian Parliament: Turkey Must Stop Egging on Azerbaijan

http://www.anc.org.au/images/cms/1/news/JA-artsakh.jpg

CANBERRA: Federal Member for Bennelong John Alexander MP has risen in Australia's House of Representatives chamber to call out Azerbaijan's attacks on Armenians in the Republics of Artsakh and Armenia and urge Turkey to "stop egging on" Baku's escalation of violence, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).

In September 2019, Alexander became the first Federal Australian parliamentarian to visit the Republic of Artsakh, earning him a place alongside many local and international political leaders on the persona non grata blacklist of Azerbaijan's dictator, Ilham Aliyev, which he recently referred to as "an honour".

The former world number eight-ranked tennis player reflected on Azerbaijan's Turkey-backed attacks on the Armenian Republics of Artsakh and Armenia, which began on 27th September and continue to today.

He expressed regret that the people of Artsakh were now being subjected to cluster bomb attacks by Baku.

"Last year I had the honour of visiting Artsakh and saw the daily struggles that people in this area go through," Alexander said. "The people of Artsakh are resilient and determined, but just like any peace-loving nation, they should not be fearing for their lives from cluster bombs over their cities."

Alexander also condemned Turkey's involvement in Azerbaijan's attacks, which has included open encouragement, the deployment of Ankara-backed Islamist jihadist mercenaries from Syria and air support.

"We must de-escalate this conflict now—not just the two countries on the ground, but more importantly, the other states on the periphery of this conflict who are encouraging it. Turkey must stop egging on Azerbaijan and escalating this conflict. Ongoing support from outside nations will only lead to more lives being lost," he said.

Alexander concluded his Members Statement by calling for respect for the Republic of Artsakh's right to self-determination.

"While we must first stop this dreadful war, we must look towards a sustainable future where the people of Artsakh can live in peace and self-determination," he said.

ANC-AU Executive Director, Haig Kayserian praised Alexander for accurately referring to the attacks as attacks, and calling out the perpetrators in Azerbaijan and Turkey.

"It has been frustrating for Armenian-Australians that our Government and media have tried to peddle Baku's preferred 'false parity' – suggesting both sides are somehow at fault – when referring to what is a blatant attempt by Azerbaijan and Turkey to rid Armenians from their indigenous lands," said Kayserian.

"Mr. Alexander's statement helps balance the ledger towards the truth, for which we are infinitely thankful and appreciative as a community."

Last week, a statement from Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne expressed "concern" at the "renewed fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan around the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh", which the Armenian-Australian community said was "disappointing".

"Australia should not be on the wrong side of history on this issue,” Kayserian told The Guardian on Tuesday. "Failing to call out the attack which instigated the ensuing violence emboldens the dictatorship of Ilham Aliyev in Azerbaijan to continue inciting Armenophobic war crimes against Armenia and Artsakh."

"We call upon the Australian Government to call crimes by name, and this was an attack by Azerbaijan backed by Turkey, who have supported with high-level weaponry and the deployment of Islamist jihadists previously fighting in Syria."

Saudi Arabia Calls for Complete Boycott of “Everything Turkish”
Oct 6, 2020
In a sign of greatly heightened tensions between the Arab world’s greatest power and Turkey, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday called for a sweeping boycott of “everything Turkish” after a statement by Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the policies of Gulf countries.
The Turkish President had charged some Gulf nations with pursuing policies that “destabilized” the region, according to a report from Gulf News.
After previously calling for an embargo on Turkish products, this most recent volley on the part of Saudi Arabia contained much more forceful language and is seen as an extremely unusual move in the world of international relations between the nations.
“The boycott of everything Turkish, whether on the level of import, investment or tourism, is the responsibility of every Saudi — trader and consumer — in response to the continued hostility of the Turkish government against our leadership, our country and our citizens,” stated Saudi Arabia’s Chamber of Commerce president Ajlan Al Ajlan in a Tweet.

In a broadside meant to insult Saudi Arabia and perhaps other Arab states, Erdogan had angrily protested against the initial boycott by charging that some Gulf nations had targeted Turkey unfairly, saying in an address to the General Assembly “It should not be forgotten that the countries in question did not exist yesterday, and probably will not exist tomorrow; however, we will continue to keep our flag flying in this region forever, with the permission of Allah.”

The previously warm relationship between Turkey and the Saudi state have soured since the brutal murder of Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi from Saudi Arabia. The veteran journalist was beaten, killed and dismembered inside the Saudi Arabian consulate in Ankara, Turkey in 2018.

In his defense, Erdogan had stated flatly that the order to kill the journalist had initiated from “the highest levels” of the Saudi Arabian government. Although he had never charged directly that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was responsible for ordering the killing, the diplomatic relationship between the Saudi kingdom and Turkey has been on a downward trajectory since that time.

Twenty individuals are already on trial in Turkey for the crime, and the country has also indicted six additional individuals from Saudi Arabia for Khashoggi’s murder, but they are not in the country and will stand trial in absentia.

Five men had last year been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for the killing, but just weeks ago their sentences were overturned and commuted to twenty years’ imprisonment.

In another sign of deteriorating relations with the rest of the Arab and Muslim world, Turkey had also recently decried the momentous decision on the part of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. At that time, the Turkish President had given a stern warning that his country might be severing its own ties with the UAE.

Turkey has itself had normal diplomatic relations with Israel for some time but the ties have become severely strained in recent years, after Erdogan sided with the Palestinians in disputes with the Israeli state.
