Opinion: Russian "corridor" through Georgia - how is Georgia threatened by the conflict in Karabakh

JAMnews

The development of a military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh may lead to the fact that Russia and Turkey directly interfere in it. In this case, Russia may try to break through a “corridor” through Georgia for the introduction of additional troops into Armenia, as well as take control of the Javakheti region inhabited by Armenians, conjectures Georgian journalist and military observer Temur Kighuradze.

Right now, Georgia is officially neutral in the conflict and appeals to both sides to cease fire and start peace talks, using Tbilisi as a meeting spot.

But with no peace talks in sight, let’s say that Azerbaijan’s response on the Armenian attack on Ganja would be a confirmed and undeniable assault on Armenia proper. Let’s say Armenia gets their hands on believable evidence of Turkey’s involvement in the Second Karabakh War. Russia launches CSTO protocols and officially backs Armenia in the conflict providing air support and, eventually, troops.

Russia’s position is clear – it needs to protect its ally and strategic interests – the South Caucasus railway, operated by Russia, energy and mining companies, as well as the Armenian population, many of whom have double Armenian and Russian citizenship.

Armenia is effectively an isolated country, surrounded by its historical adversaries – Turkey and Azerbaijan with a short stripe of Iranian border and the main supply line – Georgian border. Russia will not be able to supply its bases and military operations in Armenia, as Georgia strictly forbids any transit of Russian military cargo through Georgia as well as any military cargo to Armenia and Azerbaijan. The air route through Iran, which us currently used to supply Russian military bases in Armenia, is too long, too slow and too expensive. Russia will need a secure and reliable supply line, so making one through Georgia is Moscow’s best bet.

That’s where it goes wrong for Georgia. The supply route to Russian bases in Armenia will most likely come through Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia, that has a strong Russian military presence and is directly linked to Russian border. The route from South Ossetia to Armenia may lay through Tbilisi or, alternatively, through Akhalkalaki and the whole Samtskhe-Javakheti region, a Southern Georgian territory with predominant Armenian population. As taking the nation’s capital seems like a very troublesome and costly operation, the alternative route is most likely to be chosen.

This region has already seen some instability and rallies in support of Armenia in the war. With the increased Russian interest to this region, might ignite the tensions in the region, use the situation to start or stage riots or clashes between local Armenian and Azeri population from neighbouring communities.

Then two scenarios can easily be used:

Samtskhe-Javakheti region proclaims independence from Georgia, establishes a “People’s republic’’, accusing Georgia of oppressing the local population, its language and culture and supporting Turkey and Azerbaijan (Georgia’s largest trade partners) in the war. Russia backs the claim announcing it is going to save the region from notorious “Georgian fascists and their Westren and Turkish puppeteers’’, and protect Russian citizens in the region, as a decent part of Javakheti Armenian population has double Georgian-Russian citizenship or even triple – Georgian-Armenian-Russian one.

Russia accuses Georgia in the support of terrorism (alike similar accusations during the First and the Second Chechen wars and following bombing of Georgian Pankisi Gorge by Russia in 2002), blaming Tbilisi for providing a safe route to transport Turkey-backed Syrian rebels through Georgia to the frontline. Those allegations have already been made and the Head of Georgian State Security Service had to officially deny it.

Russian troops, using South Ossetia as a base quickly conduct an “anti-terrorist operation” to secure the Turkish border in Samtskhe-Javakheti and cut two main roads linking Western and Eastern Georgia. Russian troops can even easily recapture old Soviet base in Akhalkalaki, a historical location used as a stronghold in Russo-Turkish wars in the 19th century and continuously used in anticipation of Turkish threat throughout the Cold War. As soon as the main highways are secured, the road to Armenia is open.

What can follow those actions and will South Caucasus even exist in its modern shape and borders can be open to any interpretations, but none of them are good for us or any other nation in the region. Karabakh could become a new Sarajevo, igniting a spark, that will light a huge fire, and countless bodies of soldiers and civilians alike will keep it burning. We need to stop this madness.

Turkey decries 'double standard' after Canada halts drone tech sales

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Canada's decision to suspend exports of some military technology over allegations the equipment was used by Azeri forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict shows a double standard, Turkey's foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

"Turkey expects Canada to follow a policy free of double standards and to act without being influenced from those opposed to Turkey," the ministry said in a statement.

"There is no explanation of blocking defence equipment exports to a NATO ally while ... Canada does not see any harm in exporting arms to countries that have military involvement in the crisis in Yemen," it said.

Turkey carefully sticks to its obligations under its comprehensive export-control regime, the ministry added.

Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said on Monday Canada suspended the export of some drone technology to Turkey while it investigates whether it was used by Azeri forces in more than a week of fierce clashes with Armenia.

Turkey has in the past supplied drones to Azerbaijan and has repeated it stands firmly beside its close ally in the conflict over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Canadian arms control group Project Ploughshares says video of air strikes released by Baku indicates the drones had been equipped with imaging and targeting systems made by L3Harris Wescam, the Canada-based unit of L3Harris Technologies Inc.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have accused each other of attacking civilian areas and hundreds of people have been killed in the deadliest clashes in the region for more than 25 years. NATO has urged an immediate ceasefire.

Defense Ministry: Artsakh's armed forces target exclusively military facilities of Azerbaijan

1030239.jpg 11:33, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. The Defense Army of Artsakh is targeting exclusively military facilities of the Azeri forces, Armenian Defense Ministry representative Artsrun Hovhannisyan told ARMENPRESS.

“Yes, the Defense Army is targeting exclusively military facilities of permanent deployment in Azerbaijani major cities,” he said.

The Azerbaijani armed forces continue striking Stepanakert City, the capital of Artsakh, using the Polonez and Smerch heavy multiple rocket launchers.

“Despite numerous warnings, the Azerbaijani terrorist army continues targeting the peaceful population of Stepanakert with Polonez and Smerch systems. From now on the military facilities permanently deployed in Azerbaijan’s major cities are legitimate targets of the Defense Army. I am calling on the Azerbaijani population to immediately leave these cities to avoid possible losses,” Harutyunyan earlier said on October 4.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani military continues striking the civilian population of Artsakh, including in the capital city Stepanakert, with internationally prohibited munitions, the Defense Ministry said, posting a video showing the heavy damages to civil infrastructure and remnants of the munitions.

“Azerbaijan continues targeting Artsakh’s peaceful settlements, including the capital Stepanakert, with munitions that are prohibited by international humanitarian law. The Defense Army of Artsakh is already delivering powerful strikes at crucial military facilities deployed deep behind Azeri lines. The responsibility for escalating the conflict to yet another level falls on Azerbaijani side.”

Earlier on October 3, the defense ministry said Artsakh's civilian population is being hit by Azeri cluster munitions.

‘International community cannot let another genocide happen’ – Alexis Ohanian

1030255.jpg 12:41, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. The Reddit and Initialized Capital co-founder Alexis Ohanian has again addressed the international community, calling on to pay attention to the ongoing Turkey-backed Azerbaijani military operations against Artsakh.

“We, the international community, cannot let another genocide happen”, Alexis Ohanian said on Twitter, sharing the post of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

In that post the Armenian PM stated in particular that “Azerbaijani-Turkish bandits are not here to deal with Karabakh or the Karabakh issue. They have not come with the objective of capturing villages, cities. Their key target is the Armenian nation. And they have set themselves the task of bringing to completion the Armenian Genocide”.

Eric Esrailian, the producer of The Promise movie on the Armenian Genocide, also shared the image of the Artsakh flag with the hashtag Recognize Artsakh on his Twitter account. “Join me and show your solidarity by posting this flag. Express your outrage regarding the unprovoked attacks by Azerbaijan, assistance from Turkey and the overt desire for ethnic cleansing”, he said.

Azerbaijan launched an attack on Artsakh on September 27 with the support of Turkey, targeting also the civilian settlements, including the capital Stepanakert. Civilians were killed in Artsakh as a result of the Azerbaijani offensive.

Fierce battles took place between the Azerbaijani and Artsakh sides, with both suffering huge losses both in the manpower and the military equipment. But the losses of the Azerbaijani side are much more than that of the Artsakh side. The Azerbaijani armed forces have also targeted Armenia’s military and civilian infrastructures. There is evidence that Turkey is directly engaged in Azerbaijan’s offensive, in particular it transported mercenaries from Syria for using them against Artsakh.

Azerbaijan is bombing various settlements of Artsakh, including the capital Stepanakert with Smerch, Polonez multiple rocket launchers, various missile systems for several days. UAVs continue circulating in the air of Stepanakert, President of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunyan said live on Facebook, adding that in response to this, the respective units of the Artsakh armed forces fired a rocket salvo for the first time by his order.

“I stated it in time, warned in time. I regret that we hit the permanent military deployment places of our historic city of Gandzak, Ganja, because they forced us to that”, the President of Artsakh said.

The President called on Azerbaijani leadership to wake up, because Defense Army will continue in the direction of military facilities in other cities and if there is a need, in the direction of military facilities of bigger cities. That was a warning fire

He informed that he has ordered to stop the firing in the direction of military facilities of cities for some time.

“Keep civilians away. You have started this war, you have violated the rules of humanism by targeting the civilian population. You have time to think. We will continue to the end, up to the last soldier is ready to die”, he said.

Azerbaijani people are hostages of their own dictatorial regime and Turkey – Artsakh President says

1030273.jpg 14:36, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. President of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunyan says the people of Azerbaijan are the ones who are going to suffer the consequences of the Azerbaijani and Turkish leadership’s fake geopolitical ambitions and mania to stay in power.

Harutyunyan spoke live in an online address amid the Azeri attacks. He said it is necessary to continue the fight against the Azerbaijani authorities.

“I want us all together to fight against the Azerbaijani authorities, but not the Azerbaijani people. I want our Armenians to understand that the Azerbaijani people are the hostages of their dictatorial regime and at the hands of Turkey. The people of Azerbaijan are suffering because of their authorities’ fake geopolitical ambitions and mania to stay in power. They are suffering because it is the peaceful people who will bear the consequences of this all. The people of Azerbaijan will be the victim at the hands of their own authorities and Turkey. That is why we must fight a globally united struggle against the Azerbaijani authorities. And you know the types of this struggle. The Aliyev family will answer for everything,” Harutyunyan said.

Addressing the citizens of Armenia and Armenians in the Diaspora, Harutyunyan highly appreciated the unity and support.

“Dear countrymen in Armenia and the Diaspora, this is actually a sacred, patriotic war,” he said.

“I want us all to unite around the authorities, because today more than ever before is the role of the Armenia and Artsakh authorities high, it is high, responsible and crucial,” he said, thanking Armenians for their unity.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. Artsakh is denying Azeri President Ilham Aliyev’s claim on the Azeri forces having captured Jabrayil.

Artsakh presidential spokesperson Vahram Poghosyan told ARMENPRESS that Aliyev’s claim is an “absolute disinformation.”

“That’s absolutely a disinformation. Battles are taking place at this moment at the entire frontline, but these are inter-positional battles and the Azerbaijani military doesn’t have any success in any direction,” Poghosyan said.

Armenian Defense Ministry spokesperson Shushan Stepanyan also commented on Aliyev’s tweet.

President Armen Sarkissian addresses Diaspora

1030311.jpg 18:42, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian addressed the Diaspora, noting that a powerful and strong Diaspora is a genuine army, who supports the Homeland and the courageous Armenian Army.

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the President’s Office, the address runs as follows,

‘’Fellow compatriots, beloved brothers and sisters!

I experience a deep admiration, awe, and boundless pride seeing, hearing and feeling the powerful wave of solidarity and unity, which is getting momentum in Diaspora in response to Azerbaijan’s and Turkey’s jointly unleashed war at the borders of Armenia and in Artsakh.

I want you to know that our Homeland hears and feels the voice of each of you, the word of each of you, the restless beating of your hearts, no matter where you are, no matter how far away you are.

Our powerful and strong Spyurk is a genuine army, who supports the Homeland and the courageous Armenian Army at this difficult and fateful moment.

The Homeland is grateful for the precious assistance you provide by your material assistance and your active participation to the “We are our borders: All for Artsakh” global fundraising campaign organized by the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund.

Today, each of you is Armenia’s and Artsakh’s ambassador abroad. With all possible means-rallies, demands, petitions and statements-you do everything to bring the truth and the voice of Artsakh to the international community and especially to your home governments about the inhuman essence of the war unleashed by Azerbaijan with the full support of Turkey.

I am convinced you fully realize that in this current situation we need even to multiply our efforts.

Please, keep vibrant the same spirit and the same dedication because this time not only Azerbaijan but the genocidal Turkey too– with its arms, servicemen, and mercenary terrorists, with its hateful words and anti-Armenian propaganda are against us, against the freedom-loving people of Artsakh. This is the same Turkey, which perpetrated ethnic cleansings and the Genocide against the Armenians 105 years ago in the Ottoman Empire.

This time this will not pass; this time we will not allow another genocide to happen.

Our global nation is powerful with its unity and united strength.

There shall not be any doubt that we will defeat the enemy.

We are invincible because of our unequivocal unity and solidarity.

We will win.

God bless all of us’’.

Artsakh’s army will not target Talyshstan and Lezgistan as sign of good will – President of Artsakh

1030312.jpg 18:57, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. President of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunyan has announced that the Defense Army of Artsakh, as a sign of good will, will not target the Azerbaijani military facilities located in Talyshstan and Lezgistan, ARMENPRESS reports Harutyunyan said, addressing the friendly Talysh and Lezgin peoples.

‘’Dear Talysh and Lezgi brothers and sisters!

We are closely following the internal political developments in Azerbaijan, in particular, the growing protests in Talysh and Lezgin populated cities and villages of Azerbaijan, where the population is boycotting Aliyev's order to join the army and fight against Artsakh and Armenia.

Hundreds of victims reported among the Lezgin and Talysh population provoked the protests.

The modus operandi of the Azerbaijani political clan to use them as a living target and get rid of them in this way has not changed for decades.

We value the deep understanding of our cause by the native people of Azerbaijan, the Talysh and Lezgins, as well as your constant manifestation of sympathy.

I want to assure that we stand by the legitimate struggle of the Talysh and Lezgin people. We are ready to contribute by all possible means to the ultimate goal of your struggle - gaining independence.

The Defense Army, as a sign of our good will, will not target the adversary military facilities located in Talyshstan and Lezgistan’’.

There are media reports showing Azerbaijan I authorities forcefully taking ethnic minorities to the frontline.

Armenia last obstacle for Turkey in its imperialistic aspirations – Pashinyan speaks with Bild

1030313.jpg 18:58, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan gave an interview to German ‘’Bild’’.

To the remark that Nagorno Karabakh conflict has not received adequate international attention and that the world is more interested in Donald Trump and his infection with coronavirus, PM Pashinyan answered, ‘’I think that the developments in our region receive adequate international attention and this is maybe for the reason that mercenaries and terrorists have appeared here from Syria’’, Pashinyan said, adding that they have been recruited by Turkey to fight against Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) and Armenia.

‘’I think that the current situation is no longer a local security issue and has become a global issue’’, Nikol Pashinyan said, noting that Turkish servicemen are also involved in this process and this is the demonstration of the Turkish imperialistic policy. ‘’These are actions aimed at the restoration of the Turkish Empire, which are in the same logic as Turkey’s activities in the Mediterranean, Middle East and Libya’’, he said.

To the question what are the motives of Turkey to support Azerbaijan, PM Pashinyan answered, ‘’I already said that that’s the result of Turkey’s and Erdoğan’s imperialistic policy. And I think that in most probability there is a task of depriving Azerbaijan of sovereignty so as it can be swallowed by Turkey’’, Pashinyan said, emplacing that Armenians are the last obstacle on the way of Turkey to north, south-east, and east.

‘’If the international community does not react to all this adequately, they should be ready to wait for Turkey near Vienna’’, Pashinyan said, adding that the European countries should clearly condemn violence, the launch of violence and the joint aggression of Azerbaijan, Turkey and terrorists against Nagorno Karabakh and Artsakh.

Armenian protesters in L.A. decry ‘false equivalence’ in media coverage of conflict
By ALEX WIGGLESWORTH STAFF WRITER
OCT. 5, 2020
6 AM

Protesters rallied over the weekend outside media offices in Hollywood and onto freeways in the latest demonstrations calling attention to violence in a contested area in the southern Caucasus that has become the subject of renewed fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the past week.

Dozens of civilians have been killed since Sept. 27, officials in both countries say, in the biggest escalation in the decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh — which Armenians call by its historic name, Artsakh — since the 1990s. The tiny mountainous enclave is recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, but its population of about 150,000 is majority ethnic Armenian, and it is financially backed by Armenia.

The demonstrations Saturday and Sunday came together spontaneously on social media and drew about 500 participants to the CNN building, where they gathered outside and called for broadcast outlets to provide more accurate coverage of the conflict. Activists also marched onto the 101 and 170 freeways, blocking traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

“If there’s a problem here, it’s the false equivalence international media has drawn toward Armenia and Azerbaijan,” said Alex Galitsky, communications director for the Armenian National Committee of America, Western Region. “Armenia is acting out of self-defense to preserve the existence of its people, and Azerbaijan is acting out of aggression.”

Armenians say the conflict was instigated by Azerbaijan with the backing of Turkey after months of planning. Many described it as a push to finish the Armenian genocide begun by Turkey’s precursor, the Ottoman Empire, in 1915. They say Turkey has sent paid Islamic State mercenaries from Syria to fight in the region, a claim that has been backed by the leaders of France and Russia. And they characterize both Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia as tiny Christian and Democratic strongholds that are being attacked by much richer and stronger Muslim and authoritarian nations in a display of brute force.

Turkey has publicly sided with Azerbaijan but has denied sending fighters to the area.

Mayor Eric Garcetti on Sunday said: “We stand with the people of Armenia. I urge our leaders in Washington to conduct the sustained and rigorous diplomacy necessary to bring peace to the Artsakh region. Turkey must disengage.”

The conflict has galvanized the Armenian community in Los Angeles, which is home to more Armenians than any city other than the capital of Armenia, Galitsky said.

“Many of those in our community are descendants of Armenian genocide survivors,” he said. “As a result, they see what’s happening as very much a continuation of what was done 105 years ago.”

The majority of Armenians here know people who are fighting on the front lines of the conflict, and they’ve also seen tension spill over into the diaspora community, with armed Azerbaijani counterprotesters attending a pro-Armenian demonstration in July, he said.

“Our community is so united around this issue and so united in their condemnation of Azerbaijan,” Galitsky said, “but also in the belief that what Azerbaijan represents is an existential threat to Armenian people, and there is a need for our entire community internationally to rally around our nation and do whatever we can to support it.”

Shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, some protesters spilled onto the 101 Freeway near Sunset Boulevard. They dispersed less than an hour later, said Chris Baldonado, public information officer with the California Highway Patrol. No arrests were made.

A group of protesters camped outside the CNN building overnight, and some remained there Sunday afternoon. They said they planned to continue demonstrating until they saw fair news coverage.

Another rally was held Sunday evening in Glendale.

“We’re doing everything possible to fight the Azerbaijani propaganda war machine, which is basically spewing lies across different media outlets,” said Raffi Kassabian, vice chair of the Armenian National Committee of America, Western Region. “We want to make sure the world is aware of both Turkey and Azerbaijan’s neo-Ottomanism, which is an ethnic cleansing of Armenians to basically drive them off historical Armenian land.”

Protesters are also calling on the international community to clearly side with Armenia and to condemn Azerbaijan and Turkey for perpetrating human rights abuses, rather than simply calling for both sides to come to the table and negotiate.

Though the conflict concerns an enclave that’s only about 1½ times the size of Yosemite National Park, it has far-reaching implications.

Russia is friendly with both Armenia and Azerbaijan but has a defense alliance with Armenia, as well as a military base there. Still, Armenia is unlikely to call on Russia for help, as it has tried to distance itself from the superpower since Armenia’s Democratic revolution in 2018, said Tamara Voskanian, a Los Angeles Armenian-American ethics attorney and advocate.

In turn, she said, the United States, Russia and other world powers have been hesitant to get involved because they don’t want to be dragged into what could become an all-out war. They are also distracted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the fresh upheaval President Trump’s illness has heaped on the upcoming U.S. election, she said.

Azerbaijan has also accused Armenia of targeting civilians and claims that it instigated the conflict.

“Azerbaijan is defending itself, its civilian population, on its own soil and with its own armed forces,” Nasimi Aghayev of the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles said late Saturday in a videotaped statement. He denied that religion has played a role in the conflict and described portrayals of it as such as propaganda advanced by Armenia and its allies.

“The racist and white supremacist propaganda promoted by Armenia and their allies, with which they intend to cash in on the already divisive environment and Islamophobic prejudices, must be condemned by everyone who believe that such dangerous bigotry and intolerance have no place in Europe, U.S. or anywhere else,” Aghayev said.

The conflict dates back decades. Nagorno-Karabakh gained autonomous status in the Soviet era, but its struggle to break away from Azerbaijan outright began even before the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. Fighting from 1988 onward killed about 30,000 people and displaced 1 million. That battle ended with a 1994 cease-fire and de facto self-rule.

Violent flare-ups have occurred periodically, including in 2016, when clashes left at least 200 people dead, as well as in July and August.

For Armenians, the fight is one to maintain control of their ancestral homeland.

“If we lose Artsakh, we lose, really, the heart of present-day Armenia,” Voskanian said.

She noted that most Armenians around the world were displaced by ethnic cleansing, with roughly 10 million living outside their home country, compared with 3 million within it.

“For Azerbaijan, this is about a notch on a belt, a territory, bragging rights, pride and maintaining dictatorship,” Voskanian said. “For Armenians, it’s about way more than that. It’s about keeping the tiny percentage of land that we have left, because without that, we don’t know how we’re going to survive as a people around the world.”

Ilham Aliyev has appeared in information blockade in his own country – military

1030336.jpg 21:29, 4 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. The Defense Ministry of Armenia has grounded suspicions that Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev has appeared in information blockade or zone of disinformation in his own country, ARMENPRESS reports representative of MoD Armenia Artsrun Hovhannisyan said in a press conference.

‘’The president of the country, his family members and the top leadership are spreading disinformation. We have all grounded suspicions to think that Aliyev has appeared in information blockade or zone of disinformation in his own country’’, Hovhannisyan said.

He said that, in fact, the Commander-in-chief of Azerbaijan has lost control of the situation or false information is reported to him.

Artsrun Hovhannisyan referred to the destruction of the military airport of Ganja, noting that today the Azerbaijani armed forces were unable to carry out any strategic operation today, and this is also because the support of the Turkish air force operating from that airport has been neutralized.

On October 4 Artsakh destroyed the military airport of Ganja, from where civilian and military infrastructures of both Artsakh and Armenia were regularly bombarded. A Turkish F-16 fighter jet downed an Armenian SU-25 jet in the Armenian air force on September 29. The F-16 was also operating from that airport.

Canada to suspend arms exports to Turkey over Armenia, Azerbaijan conflict allegations
By Staff The Canadian Press
Posted October 5, 2020 4:24 pm

Canada is suspending arms exports to Turkey while it investigates claims that drone-sensor technology created by an Ontario company is being improperly used in renewed fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne announced the new move today after ordering an investigation last week.

Champagne was responding to calls from arms-control watchdogs, Armenian Canadians and New Democrats to suspend the export of a targeting sensor made by a Burlington, Ont. company that is allegedly being used in Turkish attack drones.

Turkey is a Canadian NATO ally and faces allegations it is involved in the renewed fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan in a disputed region of the Caucasus.

Champagne says he is suspending the permits to allow time to assess the situation.

Canada and Britain have called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to settle their differences in negotiations before the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

Arab League chief condemns Turkey over its role in increased tension in Caucasus

1030362.jpg 10:08, 5 October, 2020

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 5, ARMENPRESS. Secretary-General of Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit has warned Turkey over its role in increased regional tension in the Caucasus and Mediterranean regions, saying that “it will not end well” for that country, Arabnews reports.

“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is interfering in Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Libya militarily,” he added. “Erdogan also interfered in the Caucasus between Azerbaijan and Armenia, collided with Greece and Cyprus, and attacked the eastern Mediterranean in the gas areas. It annoys me that the Syrians use mercenaries to fight with Azerbaijan against Armenia ... It is very sad that Syrian mercenaries are being used by Erdogan in cases that are unrelated to Turkey,” Aboul Gheit said as quoted by Arabnews.

Azerbaijan launched an attack on Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) on September 27 with the support of Turkey, targeting also the civilian settlements, including the capital Stepanakert.
