Yervant1
CIVILNET.AM 1 October, 2020 03:43 Arayik Harutyunyan, President of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, held a press conference on September 30 to answer questions from domestic and international reporters as the fourth day of fighting continues in the region. The president said military operations continued along the entire Line of Contact between Karabakh and Azerbaijan.Asked about the role of Turkey, Harutyunyan said the country’s immediate presence in the hostilities and their deployment of Turkish aviation against Karabakh must be taken into account, along with their overall ambitions in the region."Back in April 2016, the military operations were conducted by Azerbaijan against Artsakh [Karabakh]. Russia had the capabilities of mediating and asking for a ceasefire,” he said. "Now the context has changed because Turkey is directly and explicitly involved. I wonder if Russia would like to be involved to mediate between Armenia and Turkey."Harutyunyan added that Turkish ambitions towards the Caucasus region, and towards Armenia specifically, are not fresh, and are “a matter of hundreds of years." When asked about Iran’s role, he said there have only been statements and no actual steps taken towards mediation. While there are losses on both sides, Harutyunyan claims there are more on the Azerbaijani side, adding that such was also the case during the Nagorno-Karabakh War in the 1990s and in the April War of 2016."Of course, the Azerbaijani side is very indifferent to their manpower losses,” Harutyunyan said in Armenian. “This is very inhumane and barbaric on behalf of Azerbaijan." The president said that over the past four days, Armenian forces have shot down as much military equipment as they did during the entire duration of the war in the 1990s, which ended with a 1994 ceasefire.“The war will end, and the result of the war will be the failure of Azerbaijan,” the president declared. “In terms of consequences, they will have tens of thousands of casualties and manpower loss and wounded personnel."He went on to say, "Unfortunately, it is the people of Azerbaijan who will suffer because of the irresponsible attitude of its leadership." "As for the tactics of the defense army, we will impose peace on Azerbaijan,” Harutyunyan said.Karabakh’s leadership has called upon diaspora Armenian lobbying organizations around the world to appeal to different organizations in the international community, the president noted. Armenians from around the world have come to help defend Karabakh, he said."All issues on the political agenda are under discussion,” he said. “We will make our decision guided by principles of the people of Artsakh, who need to have the ability to realize their right to self-determination."ALSO WATCH: France, Iran and Russia Warn Turkey On Its Involvement in Karabakh https://www.civilnet.am/news/2020/10/01/%E2%80%98We-Will-Impose-Peace-on-Azerbaijan%E2%80%99-Karabakh-President-says/397760

Yervant1
Asbarez.com L.A. City Council Passes Krekorian Resolution Condemning AzerbaijanSeptember 30, 2020 http://asbarez.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/download-1.jpegLos Angeles City Councilmember Paul KrekorianLos Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian sponsored a resolution today through which the City of Los Angeles has condemned the brutal and unprovoked invasion launched over the weekend by Azerbaijan against the Republic of Artsakh. The resolution, which was co-sponsored by Council President Nury Martinez, demands that the Trump Administration and the Congress “utilize all diplomatic, economic and political means to compel Azerbaijan to engage meaningfully in the peace process.”Krekorian’s resolution emphasizes that support for Artsakh is essential to US interests and core American principles. “Because our country is based on and committed to the values of democracy, liberty and the right of self-determination, the United States has a moral obligation to stand up and speak out on behalf of the people of the Republic of Artsakh, who have earned their right of self-governance and have flourished as a free, democratic and sovereign nation for almost 30 years,” the resolution states.“The world community must condemn Azerbaijan for renewing warfare, violating its ceasefire agreement with Armenia, and causing death and destruction to the Armenian population that it so detests,” Krekorian added. “Its corrupt and autocratic regime is using brute force against civilians in a misguided attempt to reimpose Stalin-era oppression over the indigenous Armenian people of Artsakh in their own ancient homeland.”In co-sponsoring the resolution, City Council President Nury Martinez said, “Since Saturday, the people of Artsakh have been under attack by Azerbaijan’s military, who have violently and recklessly attacked children and families, causing the loss of innocent lives. The City of Los Angeles stands with the Armenian people and the Republic of Artsakh and denounces Azerbaijan for these vicious attacks and violating a cease-fire that is in place. Today, I joined Councilmember Krekorian and my colleagues in issuing a resolution calling on the White House, Secretary of State and Congress to denounce this attack and work to end it immediately.”Krekorian noted the strong ties between the City of Los Angeles and the Republic of Artsakh. Through Krekorian’s prior work, Los Angeles recognized Artsakh’s sovereignty in 2014, laying the groundwork for California and other states and cities to follow LA’s lead. In 2012, Krekorian led Los Angeles to establish a historic formal Friendship City relationship with Shushi. More recently, the government of Azerbaijan unsuccessfully attempted to stop Krekorian from hosting Armenian President Pashinyan at Los Angeles City Hall. “The City of Los Angeles has always stood in strong solidarity with the people of Artsakh, recognizing the sovereignty of its people and the democratic values of its government,” Krekorian said.Krekorian was quick to condemn Azerbaijan on Sunday and provide succinct information about the latest Azerbaijani aggression in a letter to constituents and community members.Asbarez obtained the letter and is providing in full below.Yet again, Azerbaijan’s military forces have launched a deadly and unprovoked attack against its Armenian neighbors. Yet again, Azerbaijan’s recklessness puts innocent civilian lives and fundamental United States interests at risk. And yet again, the Armenian people face a genuine threat of the continuation of Turkish efforts to annihilate us.As you know, last night, Azeri tanks, helicopters and artillery attacked Artsakh, including Stepanakert. This invasion follows the deadly attacks Azerbaijan launched just two months ago against rural villages in Armenia. During a time when the UN has called for ceasefire around the world due to the COVID pandemic, Azerbaijan instead is renewing warfare, violating its ceasefire agreement with Armenia, and causing death and destruction to the Armenian population that it so detests.http://asbarez.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Paul-Krekorian-Square.jpgLA City Councilman Paul-Krekorian unveles the Los Angeles-Shushi Friendship Square during his visit to Artsakh in 2014This reckless invasion is a direct threat not only to the Armenian population of the region, but also to regional stability. Already, Turkish dictator Erdogan is threatening Armenia and offering full support to the Azeri invasion. It is not hard to imagine that a full scale war against a country that borders on Turkey, Russia and Iran presents a grave danger to the world. Azerbaijan’s actions create an immediate danger of escalation that would enflame a tinderbox and severely damage US strategic interests in the region. The corrupt Baku regime’s outrageous warmongering and racist hatred of Armenians seems to know no limits. This attack is just the latest in a consistent record of Azeri barbarity directed at Armenians who just want to go about their lives in peace. The Azeris targeted Armenian civilians with mass murder in the pogroms of 1988 and 1990. They targeted Armenian civilians with indiscriminate shelling during Artsakh’s war of independence. Twenty years ago they destroyed a thousand year old Armenian cemetery at Julfa, ignoring the pleas of UNESCO and desecrating tens of thousands of graves. They celebrated as a hero and rewarded the Azeri soldier who beheaded an Armenian with an axe during a NATO “Partnership for Peace” program in 2004. They targeted Armenian civilian villages and committed shocking war crimes during their 2016 invasion of Artsakh. And now they are engaging in the same kinds of ruthless violence and abomination yet again. If that were not enough, the bellicose Azerbaijan government recently threatened to launch a missile attack on a nuclear power plant, releasing massive amounts of radiation only 20 miles from Yerevan. The spokesperson for the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry today bragged about their capability of hitting the power plant, which would, as he put it, “lead to a great disaster for Armenia.” This rhetoric is a continuation of Azerbaijan’s repeated threats, including from its famously corrupt and dictatorial president, to destroy and conquer all Armenian lands. This outrageous and consistent pattern of aggression completely shreds all international norms and notions of human decency. Worse, Azeri violence and threats carry with them the echoes of generations of pan-Turkish commitment to erasing the Armenian population and culture from the world. The most dramatic manifestation of this lust for ethnic cleansing, of course, was the Armenian Genocide — but the actions, statements and active preparations of Azerbaijan and its enabler Turkey make clear that genocide is a genuine threat in our time as well. The United States, France and Russia, as co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, have attempted for years to mediate a sustainable negotiated peace, but those efforts have utterly failed. Azerbaijan has consistently violated the ceasefire with scores of attacks across the border, resulting in both civilian and military deaths in both Armenia and Artsakh. The United States nonetheless still refuses to state clearly that there is only one perpetrator that continues to be responsible for the violence, bloodshed and instability in the region, and that is Azerbaijan. Any statement of moral equivalence in the face of continued massive violence, aggression and genocidal threats by the government of Azerbaijan is entirely unacceptable. Our government has an obligation to hold Baku accountable for Azerbaijan’s destruction of the peace process and its ongoing crimes and threats.Unless Azerbaijan immediately faces meaningful consequences and international condemnation, there is little chance of achieving lasting peace. The interests of the United States will be harmed by instability in this vital region, and our reputation in the international community will be irreparably damaged by our failure to stand up and speak out on behalf of the victims of this inexcusable and continuing record of Azeri aggression and violence. And if another genocide of Armenians comes, the nations who failed to stop it will have no excuse for their complicity.I therefore have called upon the United States government to condemn Azerbaijan unequivocally for its latest violation of the ceasefire, and to demand an immediate and permanent cessation of all Azeri hostile action. I further have called upon the Trump Administration and the United States Congress to take immediate action to cease all military support and cooperation with Azerbaijan, including suspending all arms shipments to Azerbaijan. Finally, I have called upon the United States Department of State to utilize all diplomatic, economic and political means to compel Azerbaijan to engage meaningfully in the peace process, through the Minsk Group or otherwise, to achieve a sustainable, lasting peace that ensures the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Artsakh. In solidarity with the people of Artsakh, I remain https://asbarez.com/197261/l-a-city-council-passes-krekorian-resolution-condemning-azerbaijan/?fbclid=IwAR0dzT2YK2iPp7-nNQVPELhXEo2ZRxZZyCk2byrgdKK6_yoWFn2oK25nY4o

The protesters also raised their angry voice in condemnation of Turkey’s brazen and criminal intervention in the Karabakh conflict. The busy section of Wilshire Boulevard in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles was closed throughout the entire protest, which was organized by the Armenian Youth Federation and drew a crowd representing a cross-section of the community. Unlike a similar protest in July, when a group of Azerbaijani disrupted the event by instigating violence and threatening demonstrators, Wednesday’s protest was peaceful and the cowardly Azerbaijanis did not show up. The short programmed included a moving speech by AYF member Hratch Avedissian, who articulated the demands for justice of the Armenian people. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to military threaten the lives of innocent Armenians in Artsakh, who have expressed their fundamental right to self-determination. He also pointed out Turkey indiscriminate intervention in the Karabakh conflict, pointing out that during the most recent attacks that began on Sunday, Ankara has inserted itself in the conflict. This behavior, he said, threatens the stability and security of the entire region. Avedissian also accused Turkey of advancing the same genocidal policies that guided the Ottoman Empire in committing the Armenian Genocide. The AYF leader called on the international community to condemn Azerbaijan for its continued attacks on Artsakh and Armenia, and urge Turkey to stop its interventionist policies. However, the protest was also an opportunity for Armenians in Los Angeles to gather and honor the valiant soldiers who have been guarding the borders of Armenia and Artsakh and protecting the Armenian Nation. Avedissian said that as long as there is a war, all Armenians are united in solidarity with the heroic Armed Forces of Artsakh and Armenia. The hashtag #ՅաղթելուԵնք (WeWillWin) that has become the unifying call since Sunday’s attacks became the slogan that was loudly chanted at the close of Wednesday protest. Yervant1
It seems this is turning into religious war, some Muslim countries are joining together but we Armenians don't see Islam as our enemies. Eurasian TimesSept 30 2020 Pakistan Has Deployed Its Soldiers In Azerbaijan To Fight Armenia – Armenian Media September 30, 2020 Pakistan has allegedly deployed its army to the war-torn region of Nagorno-Karabakh to fight Armenia alongside Azerbaijani troops, claimed an Armenian news report citing telephonic conversation between two civilians.According to FreeNews.AM, the following conversation took place that revealed the presence of Pakistani Army in Azerbaijan.“How can we write? I don’t have money. We are fine, don’t worry, 7-8 villages were liberated, don’t be afraid,” said a second civilian. “Yes. I know. I have seen on Instagram that Fizuli, Agdam have been liberated from occupation. Our side says that we have also taken Mrav mountain. What’s wrong with the internet, why doesn’t it work?” the first civilian asked. The second one said that their ministry has turned it off. “As a lot of things happen here, people get in touch with Armenians, that’s why they have turned it off.”On being asked whether the shooting is taking place in the second civilian’s region, he said, “on Agdam’s side. They have gathered Pakistani soldiers and have taken them towards Agdam.”Pakistan is the second country, apart from Turkey, that recognised Azerbaijan’s sovereignty in 1991. Ties between Islamabad and Ankara have been strengthened as the latter has been openly supporting Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir issue. Perhaps, the alleged presence of Pakistani troops points to Islamabad reciprocating Turkey for its support on the Kashmir issue by lending the Pakistani military support in Ankara’s misadventure in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. When you are a bit far from #Azerbaijan & along with your own nation you feel support of host countrynation it gives you double strength. Thanks to our dear— Ali Alizada Ankara has been supportive of Azerbaijan claim on the conflicted region of Armenian-controlled Karabakh. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned Armenia for the attack calling to immediately end the occupation of Azerbaijani territories.“Turkey continues to stand with the friendly and brotherly Azerbaijan with all its facilities and heart,” he said. Any imposition or offer other than ending the occupation “will not only be unjust and unlawful but continue to spoil Armenia,” Erdogan added.Meanwhile, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has confirmed the presence of Turkish personnel, advisers, mercenaries and also their F-16s in the region.“Unfortunately, I have to declare that NATO member Turkey is fully supporting now Azerbaijan through its electronic drones – through cyber-attacks. But it’s not only that. Turkey is supporting Azerbaijan also through their personnel, advisers, mercenaries and also with their F-16s,” he said.Armenian ambassador to Russia has further claimed that Turkey has sent about 4,000 fighters from Syria, however, Azerbaijan has rejected the claim.“Rumors of militants from Syria allegedly being redeployed to Azerbaijan is another provocation by the Armenian side and complete nonsense,” an aide to Azerbaijani President Ilhan Aliyev told Reuters. The tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia soared on Sunday morning when deadly attacks and shelling started in Nagorno-Karabakh. The long-standing dispute took a violent turn and both the sides have blamed each other for the escalation. According to a statement by the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry, as many as 2,300 Armenian soldiers have been killed or wounded, and about 130 tanks and other armoured vehicles, 200 artillery and rocket systems, 25 air defence systems, six command and observation posts, five ammunition depots and 55 vehicles destroyed since the outbreak of the conflict. On the other side, Armenia has claimed a total of 790 Azerbaijani servicemen have been killed and as many as 1,900 soldiers injured, said Artsrun Hovhannisyan, a representative of the country’s Defence Ministry, adding that the Armenian army destroyed 137 tanks and armoured vehicles, 72 UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), seven helicopters and one aircraft of the Azerbaijan army during the battles.https://eurasiantimes.com/pakistani-soldiers-fighting-along-side-azerbaijani-turkish-troops-against-armenia-armenian-reports/
Yervant1
CNBCSept 30 2020 ‘Imagine Caucasus becoming another Syria?’: Armenia’s president pleas for urgent international supportEmma Graham@THEMMAGRAHAMKEY POINTS Armenian President Armen Sarkissian issued a stern warning to the international community on Wednesday, as tensions flare between Armenia and Azerbaijan.“Imagine Caucasus becoming another Syria?” Sarkissian told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble from Yerevan.“The international community has to realize that if you don’t interfere now, then Caucasus will become another huge problem,” Sarkissian cautioned.Fighting broke out on Sunday between former Soviet republics Armenia and Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus, a disputed region that provides transit routes for oil and gas to world oil markets. The clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh region are the worst since the 1990s. The mountainous enclave is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but it has been under de facto Armenian control since the early 1990s. It declared independence from Azerbaijan in 1991.The fighting entered its fourth day on Wednesday, with Armenia’s president saying there had been nearly 100 deaths so far. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan declared martial law on Sunday. External influenceOn Tuesday evening, Armenia’s defense ministry said that a Turkish F-16 shot down an Armenian warplane over Armenia, killing the pilot.Turkish communications director Fahrettin Altun said the claim was “absolutely untrue,” according to state broadcaster TRT. Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan, has called on the “entire world” to stand with Azerbaijan. The fighting risks involving outside players vying for influence in the region, not a new concept for the Caucasus region, which is made up of south-eastern Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The strategically important stretch of land bordering the Caspian Sea has been fought over for centuries.Turkey has offered its full support to Azerbaijan. Ankara has also sent Syrian rebel fighters to join their forces against Armenia, The Guardian reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources. CNBC has been unable to independently verify these claims.Armenia has described this perceived aggression as unwelcome. Many Armenians link Turkey’s support for Azerbaijan to the 1915 genocide of ethnic Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.“If you look at activities of (the) current Turkish government, they have problems 360 degrees around them,” Armenia’s Sarkissian told CNBC.He said Ankara faced challenges in the Mediterranean, Greece, Libya and Iraq. “They are creating problems everywhere.”A spokesperson for Turkey’s government was not immediately available when contacted by CNBC. Risk to oil marketsAzerbaijan is the 24th largest crude oil producer in the world and supplies about 5% of Europe’s oil and gas needs, according to the IEA.The country has three crude oil export pipelines and two main gas export pipelines, attracting international attention to the wider South Caucasus as a key artery for oil and gas from Azerbaijan into Turkey and onto wider Europe and beyond.Despite fears this crucial infrastructure could be at risk, Sarkissian said concerns about disruption had been exaggerated.“They are saying there’s a threat to international energy pipelines, which is absolute nonsense,” Sarkissian said. He pointed out the pipeline had been in place for 20 years and “there’s absolutely no threat to energy.”If we had “the intention of shooting the pipeline, we’d have done that 20 years ago, but not now,” Sarkissian said.Oil prices were mixed on Wednesday, as rising coronavirus cases amplified concern about global fuel demand.International benchmark Brent crude traded at $40.51 a barrel during afternoon deals, down 0.6%, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate stood at $39.70 a barrel, up more than 1% for the session. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/30/azerbaijan-conflict-armenia-pleas-for-international-support.html?__source=sharebar|facebook&par=sharebar&fbclid=IwAR3sM6eQzhePllqHO0gEFR39-uDVc7e7ULfWJVxQCqUbvbIZZ9avQP2GdR8

The minister of foreign affairs immediately directed our officials to investigate these claims," Cimpaye said.Sevag Belian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee of Canada, told CTVNews.ca that there's "overwhelming evidence" in Turkish and Azerbaijani media that these drones are being used "to specifically find [and] target both military targets and civilian targets.""It makes us sick to our stomachs to find out that Canadian technology is being used to facilitate the loss of life and these abhorrent crimes that are being committed by Turkey in Azerbaijan," Belian said. Azerbaijan, Armenia no closer to ending clashes after 4 daysThe Canadian peace research institute Project Ploughshares recently published an extensive report on this issue. It says it gathered evidence that "strongly indicates” Burlington, Ont.'s L3Harris Wescam sensors have been mounted on Turkey's unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) — better known as drones — which the report claims "have been used extensively by Turkey in its recent military activities."CTV News has reached out to the company for comment, but has not received a response."It appears that Turkey has also exported UAVs equipped with WESCAM sensors to armed groups in Libya, a blatant breach of the nearly decade-old UN arms embargo," the report claims.Turkey is closely allied with Azerbaijan in its conflict with Armenia."We will certainly not leave brother Azerbaijan alone," Turkish President Recep Erdogan said on July 17 in Istanbul, according to Bloomberg News. "Armenia is an invader."In the wake of these allegations, Belian said the Armenian-Canadian community is "united" in a call for Canada to take steps that go far beyond the investigation that Champagne's office confirmed to CTV News on Wednesday."We are currently not satisfied with the way the government is responding to the situation," Belian said."The situation is so dire that civilians are being targeted, innocent children, women and men are dying, because this technology is facilitating that."He said the government must "immediately condemn" what’s happening in the region and must "suspend all exemptions" that allow this sensor to be exported to Turkey."We need affirmative action and we need it now, to save lives and to ensure that the situation currently at hand does not spiral into a regional war and something that a few weeks down the road we might regret or the government might regret, saying that you know, we should have done more," Belian said."If they have to act, they have to act now."RELATED IMAGES Minister of Foreign Affairs Francois-Philippe Champagne responds to a question during a news conference in Ottawa, Monday, March 9, 2020. Yervant1
BBC Arabic: Syrian fighter reveals details from deployment to AzerbaijanSeptember 30, 2020 - 23:44 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - International media outlets have been publishing more evidence of Turkey's involvement in recent hostilities against Nagorno-Karabakh and the deployment of Syrian fighters to Azerbaijan. In an article published on Wednesday, September 30, BBC Arabic unveils the story of Abdullah (the name is changed). The chat between the fighter and the journalist has been brief as he was sending his answers in a hurry from a military camp in the Azerbaijani army, so that none of his commanders would notice and punish him.The fighter says the camp is located on the border with Armenia and is strictly controlled. Abdullah is reportedly one of hundreds of untrained Syrians aged 17-30, who have been dispatched since a week ago, with the knowledge of the Turkish army and its ally in the Syrian north, the opposition National Army, to fight alongside the Azeri forces. The Armenian government says Turkey has deployed as many as 4,000 Syrian fighters to Azerbaijan. The Guardian and Reuters have published separate stories on the matter. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has confirmed that some SNA factions have sent fighters to Azerbaijan at the behest of Ankara, while other fighters from the cities of Homs and Ghouta have refused to go. According to the BBC story, Abdullah has accepted the job in Azerbaijan for $2,000 a month to improve his and his family's living conditions, but he had no idea what to expect because when the offer was made, Azerbaijan hadn't unleashed the war on Karabakh. After arriving in Azerbaijan, all their money, phones and clothes have been taken away, but Abdullah says he has managed to get his phone back to be able to communicate with his family. When the war broke, he says they were loaded into personnel carriers and given a single Kalashnikov gun each."Most of us here are poor people who wanted the money but are no soldiers. The vehicle stopped and we were surprised to find ourselves on the frontline. The younger ones started crying in fear and wanted to return to the camp. Then a shell fell next to us, killing four Syrians and wounding three others," Abdullah remembers. The fighter says he has seen the bodies of ten Syrians in the camp where he is dispatched, while seventy others have been injured, with no access to healthcare.Local sources in northern Syria have told BBC Arabic that a number of families have been receiving news of the death of their relatives in Azerbaijan."After the start of the war, we have tried to return to Syria, but they won't let us. We were threatened with long prison terms if we refused to fight in the front," he says.Azerbaijan launched a major offensive against Karabakh (Artsakh) in the morning of September 27, shelling Armenian positions and civilian settlements with large caliber weapons and rocket systems. Yervant1
Greek ReporterOct 1 2020 Greek Armenians Hold Rally in Athens: “We are Like Brothers and Sisters”By guest -Oct 1, 2020 1684 4 Google +0 0 0 1707 Credit: Mark Mathews/Greek ReporterBy Sean MathewsA large demonstration was held in Athens’ Syntagma Square on Wednesday by members of the Greek Armenian community in a show of solidarity with Armenia. The country is currently fighting the fourth day of an escalating war with neighboring Azerbaijan over the ethnic Armenian region of Nagorno-Karabakh.The rally was marked with people waving both Greek and Armenian flags. Speakers and those in attendance stressed the strong bond between the two Orthodox countries which have a shared history of fighting Turkish aggression.A popular chant that sounded throughout the Square was “No to the violence of Turkey and Azerbaijan.” Protestors also wore shirts invoking the memory of the Armenian genocide under Ottoman Turkey, reading “1.5 Million Reasons to Care” and displayed signs with slogans such as “The More We Remember the Stronger We Get.”The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh shows signs of spiraling into a wider regional conflict, with Turkey supporting Azerbaijan. President Erdogan has shown a willingness to flex military muscle in the Caucus region, much like he has in the Eastern Mediterranean. On Tuesday the Armenian government accused Turkey of shooting down an Armenian fighter jet and there have been reports by Reuters of Turkey sending Syrian mercenaries to fight alongside Azeri forces.George Meneshian, a Greek-Armenian who attended the rally, told Greek Reporter he was concerned about signs of Turkish aggression in the conflict.“All the Armenians of the Hellenic Republic are united because the Armenian nation is under attack not only by the Azeri regime, but also from the Republic of Turkey, because Mr. Erdogan wants to promote pan-Turkism, pan-Islamism, and Neo-Ottomanism in the Caucasus just like he did in the Middle East, the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean,” he told Greek Reporter at the event. At the rally, supporters linked Greek and Armenian flags while chanting against President Erdogan and the Azeri government. They always help each other and this time it is very important.”He expressed his pride in the Greek-Armenians reported to have left Greece to join the Armenian military over the last three days.“They say there are planes going from Greece with Armenians to help the soldiers. I feel very proud about that as a Greek-Armenian. Whatever we can do to help we should.”A show of support to those who are fighting was what brought 19-year-old Vilar Bartamian to the rally. He told Greek Reporter “Young Armenians my age will die in this war. So we are trying to send a message of support to the soldiers and to the volunteers from all over the world who will go to fight the Turks and Azeris. The Armenians are our brothers.“A large number of those attending the rally were young people. Proudly draped in Armenian flags, standing in groups with friends and wearing face masks emblazoned with the Armenian flag, they brought an energy and palpable enthusiasm to the demonstration. The Armenian Youth Federation of Greece was one of the organizers of the event. Sixteen-year-old Natalia Bekarian and her 12-year-old brother Nareg were two of the young people who were proud to be at the event supporting Armenia.Born in Greece and of Lebanese-Armenian descent, they carried posters denouncing the Azeri and Turkish aggression.Natalia also spoke with Greek Reporter, saying “I am born and raised in Greece, but Armenia is a part of me and my family. I’m here as a Greek citizen and as an Armenian to show I am against the Azerbaijan invasion and against Turkey.”https://greece.greekreporter.com/2020/10/01/greek-armenians-hold-rally-in-athens-we-are-like-brothers-and-sisters/?fbclid=IwAR3xEjA7_5P4Cc34CCjNjl_yFvzNij9pEVPiXHn_KLpEHqof9L76ex5t0_8
Yervant1
AMN 0 Al-Masdar NewsOct 1 2020 Syrian mercenaries suffer heavy losses against Armenian troops: reportBy News Desk -2020-10-010 BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:40 A.M.) – The Syrian mercenaries, who were sent to the Karabakh region to fight on behalf of Azerbaijan, have suffered significant losses over the last 48 hours, as their death toll continues to rise.According to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the Turkish-backed Syrian mercenaries have suffered heavy losses in the Karabakh region, as 28 fighters have been killed and 60 more have been wounded in clashes with the Armenian forces. The SOHR report corroborated a claim made by Syrian fighter to the BBC on Wednesday about being deceived during their recruitment to Azerbaijan. The first Syrian casualties were reported on Wednesday morning, when local activists in northern Syria began reporting about the losses of fighters from the Turkish-backed militant groups. The Syrian militants were reportedly offered $1,500 a month to deploy to Azerbaijan, where they were led to believe that they would be protecting military points inside the country. However, their deployment to Azerbaijan took a turn for the worse this week, when heavy clashes broke out between the Azerbaijani military and Armenian forces. In an interview with the BBC, a Syrian fighter named ‘Abdullah told the news agency that their forces were deployed to the front-lines and threatened with imprisonment if they refused to go.Its should be noted that despite the claims about the Syrian casualties, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense maintains that no foreign fighters are currently fighting in their ranks.https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-mercenaries-suffer-heavy-losses-against-armenian-troops-report/
Yervant1
Greek City Times Oct 1 2020 GCT Exclusive: “I cannot watch what is happening and not fight” – Approximately 80 Greeks going to Artsakh battlefront Speaking exclusively to Greek City Times, an Armenian-born Greek citizen and a seperate source wishing to be unnamed revealed that volunteers are going from Greece to defend Artsakh against the Turkish-sponsored Azerbaijani aggression. The source, wishing to remain anonymous but speaking exclusive to Greek City Times, revealed that the first batch to go to Armenia will consist of approximately 80 Greek citizens, around 50 of Armenian heritage and around another 30 ethnic Greeks. He also revealed that all the volunteers are coming from all parts of Greece, including Athens, Thessaloniki, Chalkidi, Crete and Thessaly. Iakovos Stamatiadis, in speaking with Greek City Times and separately from the unnamed source, said “I cannot sit here and watch what is happening in my homeland and not fight.” “I will go to Armenia to support my country and to fight,” the 30-year-old who arrived in Greece 28 years ago said. When asked by Greek City Times why it is important for him to go to Armenia and fight, he said “because I put my country above all,” adding “I am angry and stressed because my country defends herself and they [Azerbaijan] are invading us.” Reflecting on how his family is in Armenia, Stamatiadis said “they do not feel safe, they are afraid. The situation is very serious.” “I want to say that the government has to [openly] support Armenia. I have Greek friends, I live in Greece. I know that Greek people are with us. Greeks want to go to Armenia to fight,” he said. When asked whether these were ethnic Greeks or Armenian-Greeks, he confirmed that it was ethnic Greeks who wanted to go to Artsakh and fight. “Let me say that Greeks are a heroic people,” Stamatiadis said. To the Greeks of the diaspora, he said that “they are my brothers.” “I want to say to Greeks in the diaspora that I appreciate and thank you. I am Armenian and I live in Greece. I feel myself Greek. I love Greece with all my heart. They are excellent. They are my brothers,” he said with a smile. He also said that he would not hesitate to fight for Greece in the case of a war with Turkey. Stamadiatis finalized his interview with Greek City Times by saying that he personally knows “30-35 Armenian-Greeks” going to Artsakh, and another “15-20 ethnic Greeks” who are also going. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at loggerheads with each other over the territory of Artsakh, or more commonly known as Nagorno-Karabakh, since the Soviet Union begun collapsing in the late 1980’s. As acting Commissar of Nationalities for the Soviet Union in the early 1920’s, Joseph Stalin made the decision that the Armenian-majority region of Artsakh would be under the administration of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic instead of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. Although Stalin promised Artsakh to the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, he ultimately granted the region to the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic, albeit with autonomy. This served two purposes – a continuation of the Soviet divide-and-rule strategy in the Caucasus, and a hope to turn Turkey into a socialist state by appeasing the Azeris who are linguistically and culturally nearly identical to Turks. The collapse of the Soviet Union, which resulted in the creation of 15 new countries including Armenia and Azerbaijan, created chaos throughout the Caucasus as wars broke out as a result of Stalin’s artificial borders that left ethnic groups detached from their kin. In 1921, it was estimated that Artsakh was 94% Armenian. According to the 1989 census, Artsakh’s population was approximately 75% ethnic Armenian (145,000) and 25% ethnic Azeri (40,688). Although there was a significant increase in the Azeri population in Artsakh in the 20th Century, former Soviet Azerbaijani leader Heydar Aliyev, father of current dictator Ilham Aliyev, revealed why this occurred in 2002. He states: “I tried to change demographics there. Nagorno-Karabakh petitioned for the opening of an institute of higher education there. [in Azerbaijan] everybody was against it. After deliberations I decided to open one, but on condition that there would be three sectors — Azerbaijani, Russian and Armenian. After [the institute] opened we no longer sent Azerbaijanis from the neighboring regions to Baku [and] instead [sent them] there. With these and other measures I tried to increase the number of Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh and the number of Armenians decreased.” Despite these efforts of systematic demographic change, Artsakh today is 95% ethnic Armenian. The collapse of the Soviet Union unsurprisingly led to the Artsakh War, which ended in a ceasefire on May 12, 1994 after a decisive Armenian victory led to a de facto independence for Artsakh, albeit unrecognized by no state, including Armenia, but being almost entirely reliant on Yerevan. Skirmishes have been commonplace since 1994, with serious escalations in April 2016 and July this year when Azerbaijan launched an attack on Armenia’s northeast Tavush province. Although Azerbaijan’s defense budget is $2.267 billion, about five times larger than Armenia’s, they have made little gain and sustained huge casualties. https://greekcitytimes.com/2020/10/01/greeks-going-to-artsakh-battlefront/?amp&fbclid=IwAR2i8oOCaMjW6nnOlxPNdzBDjVuj4j2Fl-XsNExkanGkWywJve7yvzY51Us
