Yervant1
Armenpress.am Azerbaijan’s Talysh activists urge compatriots to avoid conscription, advocate peace with Armenians SaveShare 03:07, 6 October, 2020YEREVAN, OCTOBER 6, ARMENPRESS. A group of Talysh activists of Azerbaijan have expressed concern over the Nagorno Karabakh conflict escalation and called on their fellow Talyshs – who constitute an ethnic minority in Azerbaijan – to avoid being enlisted into the Azeri military amid “systematic efforts” of the Azeri government to send them to the front for the attacks on Artsakh.“The conflict between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh over the past week has caused heavy losses on both sides,” the activists said in a statement published via the “Talyshistan” media group’s social media account. They said they advocate friendship and brotherhood among the peoples of the Caucasus, as well as respect towards international norms regarding peoples' right to determine their own fate.“There is no military solution to this conflict as this will only lead to problems passed down to future generations. We are extremely concerned by the Azerbaijani government's systematic efforts to send Talysh men to the front, by the large number of Talysh deaths, and the efforts to spread hate towards Armenians by exploiting Talysh martyrs. It is clear to us that the majority of Talysh people are unhappy with this situation. On the one hand, the Azerbaijani government is suppressing any form of freedom of speech in the country. On the other hand, it is manipulating those with intimate connections to the government to demonstrate as if there is hate among the Talysh towards Armenians. We call on the Azerbaijani government for the last to put an end to its plan to destroy and spread hate among the Talysh people. We advocate a brotherly co-existence among the peoples of the Caucasus. If certain people support another route then we call on them not to involve us in their plans. We call on the Talysh people not to succumb to hate speech propaganda directed towards Armenians and Azerbaijanis. We call on them to not join the military and avoid being subjected to gunfire in the clashes. We have never been antagonistic to any people throughout our history and we will continue this way.” Editing by Stepan Kocharyan https://armenpress.am/eng/news/1030492.html?fbclid=IwAR0FRMX_IGnsj5vjKDPSeSZ4_2TKJADVnILKFXpWavxWJeY9VoeF_1F4v9o

Co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Aznavour Foundation Nicolas Aznavour, son of the late French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour, has addressed a letter to President of France Emmanuel Macron, the Aznavour Foundation reports. The letter says in particular: “Mr. President,Dear friend and a friend of the Armenian people,The past few days have been filled with pain and concern for all Armenian people. The Armenian nation is once again threatened, as in 1915, and forced to fight for its survival. The population defends its positions with great courage, but the victims are numerous.I turn to you once again because you are a man and a leader who is not afraid to speak the truth and who puts human values at the forefront. You have proven that to us throughout your mandate. In your speeches you reminded Armenians and the world that Armenia is not alone in the face of its tormentors. You have courageously denounced the hypocrisy and cynicism of Turkey and its complicity in the crimes of Baku. The use of Syrian jihadists in this conflict once again reveals the perversity of these governments and represents a terrorist threat that Turkey is bringing to the gates of Europe and Russia. Baku indiscriminately targets civilians and journalists, using banned cluster ammunition, violating all standards of international law.Your support and that of the French people is essential to us. I call on you to act and save our people by recognizing the Republic of Artsakh as a sovereign country protected by the same international law as its peers, to economically sanction Azerbaijan and Turkey for their crimes and to put pressure on the UN to bring peace to the region.I believe in you and I hope with all my heart that our humanist and democratic values will triumph in the face of these obscene dictatorships which are only motivated by greed and thirst for power. Armenia is a bastion of civilization that must be defended”. https://armenpress.am/eng/news/1030503.html?fbclid=IwAR2R6wsFzjn5zfVgQPQKsfbMEwNde2R28W-fiCQHU9XGQH1-JrfPeNOOJ-g

Turkey’s leadership was the one who forced Azerbaijan to attack Artsakh, and it is only the weaker side who strikes cities inhabited with peaceful civilians during war, Artsakh’s Speaker of Parliament Artur Tovmasyan said at a news conference on October 6 in Stepanakert City, the capital of Artsakh that has come under heavy Azeri bombardment.“Aliyev was ready for an adventurism in the 2016 April War,” he said. “Aliyev also made an adventurism in the direction of Tavush,” the Speaker added, referring to the 2020 July Azeri attack on Armenian territory. “I think on September 27, 2020 it was the Turkish military-political leadership that forced Aliyev to go for this adventurism.”Tovmasyan said he thinks that Aliyev is no longer in power in Azerbaijan. The Speaker noted that in response to any statement of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs the Azeri leadership – headed by Turkey – is saying that Turkey should also participate in those talks.“I think the international community saw that the plans that Ilham Aliyev had on drinking tea in Stepanakert or Shushi in a brief period has failed,” he said, referring to an earlier belligerent remark by the Azeri president on capturing the Artsakhi capital by force.“And because it failed, he must step down. Perhaps he is already no longer in power. The entire world already knows that this war that they unleashed is led by Turkey,” Tovmasyan said.Tovmasyan reminded that ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, particularly the Talysh and Lezgins, are already protesting against the Azeri leadership for being systematically and forcibly taken to the frontline to fight, which resulted in high numbers of deaths. The Talysh activists in Azerbaijan made a statement denouncing the Azeri leadership and called for peace.“It is the weak side that strikes the capital city during war, it is the weak side that strikes cities where peaceful civilians are living,” Tovmasyan said.Editing and Translating by Stepan Kocharyan https://armenpress.am/eng/news/1030526.html?fbclid=IwAR1drulcPuKbFwU_Oajfz6cTs4S-nSqg2r642vFBzpL5U6dWSSa-1eUBK9I

(Photo from Twitter @laurentwauquiez) Wauquiez is a French politician who served as president of The Republicans party. On Dec. 10, 2017, Wauquiez was elected president of The Republicans by a wide margin. Pundits have described him as moving the party to the right. On June 2, 2019, a week after the right had its worst result in the history in the European elections with 8.48% of the vote, Wauquiez announced his resignation as president of the party. Fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region began on Sept. 27 when Armenian forces targeted civilian Azerbaijani settlements and military positions, leading to casualties. Over the days since the conflict erupted, the Armenian Army continued shelling Azerbaijani cities and targeting civilians. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on multiple occasions announced that by pushing back the Armenian aggression in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the Azerbaijani army had liberated several areas from Armenian occupation. Many world powers including Russia, France and the U.S. have urged an immediate cease-fire. Ankara, meanwhile, has supported Baku's right to self-defense. Relations between the two former Soviet republics have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions. Some 20% of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh, has remained under illegal occupation by Armenia for roughly three decades. Yervant1
Greek City Times Oct 6 2020 Greek Community President of Armenia: Show me Azeri-Islamic cultural heritage in Artsakh, you only find Armenian by PAUL ANTONOPOULOS The president of the Union of Greek Communities of Armenia, Maria Lazareva, sends her own message, through Proto Thema, during these difficult times. Armenian forces in Artsakh are fighting the Turkish-sponsored Azeri aggression and there are many Greeks living in Armenia who are fighting for the homeland where they were born, grew up and today are its citizens. Today, it is estimated that 1,000 expatriates of Pontic origin live in Armenia, mainly in the northern part of the country and in the provinces of Shirac, Lori and the border region of Tavos close to Georgia, but also in the capital city of Yerevan. There is also a smaller Greek community in Artsakh that is being challenged once again in its modern history. Lazareva spoke of the Greek community’s challenges in the face of Azerbaijan’s invasion attempt of Artsakh. “In Armenia, this struggle is called a ‘Struggle for existence.’ And indeed, this is not just a piece of land, as the Azeris say, but a homeland, a heritage and a culture,” pointed out Lazera to Proto Thema, before also highlighting that there is not the slightest hint of Azeri and Islamic heritage in Artsakh. “Go to Artsakh and show me the Azeri-Islamic cultural heritage. You will not find anything, but you will find old Armenian monasteries and khachkars (typical Armenian medieval crosses). Armenians do not have to prove whose country this is,” she said. “The morale of the Armenians in Armenia and Artsakh, but also of the Greeks who live there, is very high and everyone, without exception, is ready to run to the front line. There is no fear at all in the Greek community or in the whole of Armenia. Unfortunately, war and conflict are not new to our lives. Even in the last days when the Azeris target the civilian population, when our villages and cities are being bombed, the people are fearless and united,” said Lazareva. She makes it known that many Greeks that are citizens of the Republic of Armenia and the yet-to-be internationally recognized Republic of Artsakh, are fighting on the side of the Armenian forces. “Most Greeks living in Armenia are citizens of the Republic of Armenia. So this is our duty to protect our homeland. Yes, soldiers and volunteers of Greek origin are fighting alongside the Armenian forces. But now there are no Greek, Russian, Kurd, Yazidi and other ethnic minorities in Armenia. We are a people and we all protect our common homeland,” Lazareva highlighted. On the occasion of communicating with the Greek public opinion, through Proto Thema , the president of the Union of Greek Communities Armenia, sends her own message during these difficult times for both Armenians and Greeks in Armenia and Artsakh. “No people in the world can understand the situation and fate of the Armenians like the Greeks. So our Greek friends and brothers, in this struggle we must be united. I repeat, this war is not for land, but for freedom, for peace, so our struggle is fair,” she said. https://greekcitytimes.com/2020/10/07/greek-community-president-of-armenia-show-me-the-azeri-islamic-cultural-heritage-in-artsakh-you-only-find-armenian/

Yervant1
Delano, LuxembourgOct 6 2020 WRITER USES LITERATURE TO SHINE LIGHT ON ARMENIA'S PLIGHTA leading Luxembourg author has launched a platform for writers to make a stand with Armenians in the disputed territory of Artsakh. On 27 September, Azerbaijani forces, backed by Turkey, launched an airborne and land attack in the de facto independent state, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, which is populated 95% by ethnic Armenians. Since then around five civilians have been killed in clashes along with scores of military personnel.Author Olivia Katrandjian, whose novel draft won second prize in the 2019 national literary prize, worked as a journalist before moving to Luxembourg in 2016. “I have been to Nagorno-Karabakh and interviewed soldiers on the frontline, many of whom are just boys. My cousins, who have babies, are waiting to be called up to fight,” she said.Desperate to spread the message, she founded the International Armenian Literary Alliance, a not-for-profit to foster the distribution of Armenian literature in English. Among its first activities will be the “Don’t Look Away: A Literary Series for Artsakh”, involving virtual readings from prize-winning writers on 10 October at 9pm. Participants include Peter Balakian, Carolyn Forche, Nancy Kricorian, Lory Bedikian, and Anna Turcotte. The latter fled Baku as a child during the anti-Armenian attacks in Azerbaijan in 1989, and recounts this experience in her memoir “Nowhere, a Story of Exile”.http://delano.paperjam.lu/sites/default/files/thisone_3.jpg Participants in a peaceful demonstration are piectured outside the Cercle Cité in Place d'Armes on 6 October 2020. Photo: Delano “Armenians all over the world are mobilising to raise money and awareness because the attacks by Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, are a threat to our existence as a people. In July, Erdogan promised ‘to fulfill the mission our grandfathers have carried out for centuries in the Caucasus,’ a statement with clear echoes of the Armenian Genocide,” Katrandjian said, adding: “Now, through constant aerial bombardments, Azerbaijan is targeting civilians and non-military infrastructure like hospitals and schools. Soldiers and civilians on both sides have lost their lives, and Armenians call for peace.”In Luxembourg on Tuesday, Armenians and friends of Armenia hosted a peaceful demonstration calling on international governments to act.“The issue isn’t just Artsakh for now. It’s bigger than that. It’s Turkey interfering in this war and fighting against the republic of Armenia. It’s a flashback to 200 years ago,” Tatevik Manukyan, honorary consul of Armenia in Luxembourg, told Delano on Tuesday. She added: “I would love the international community to express and act in solidarity with people being attacked on a massive scale right now, people in Nagorno-Karakbakh. It’s on the doorstep of Europe. I don’t want turkey to reach the gates of Vienna again before the international community wakes up because by then it will be too late.”Armenia, which has a population of around 3 million and diaspora numbering 7 million, saw 1.5 million of its people killed in Turkey and adjoining regions by the Ottoman government from 1914 to 1923. https://delano.lu/d/detail/news/writer-uses-literature-shine-light-armenias-plight/211854?fbclid=IwAR1uIn9zIYawHgwS-VY3yDoA-_QcKc1-rcEDxbKiJv2A1Sh5f87uL-ZNk3E

The current escalation of the situation in Nagorno Karabakh is concerning for Russia not only in terms of its scale, but also of the impact of new external factors, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) head Sergei Naryshkin said in a statement.“For the first time Turkey acted on Azerbaijan’s side in such an open manner. The flaring up armed confrontation in Karabakh, like a magnet, attracts militants from various international terrorist structures”, he said. The SVR head said he has information that mercenaries from international terror groups, such as the Nusra Front, the Firqat al-Hamza, the Sultan Murad Division, fighting in the Middle East, actively converge in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.“Moreover, the talk is about hundreds or even thousands of extremists who seek to profit from the new Karabakh war. Yervant1
Armenpress.am Large number of Azeri fighters amass along Araks River at Artsakh-Iran border SaveShare 09:10, 7 October, 2020YEREVAN, OCTOBER 7, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani forces are amassing in large number of groups directly along the length of the Artsakh-Iranian border from the Artsakhi side (along the Araks (Araxes) River) and are factually taking shelter with the border in an attempt to advance, Armenian Defense Ministry spokesperson Artsrun Hovhannisyan said.“The Azerbaijani armed forces units – not having sufficient capabilities of engaging in effective offensive operations, are resorting to obvious provocations for already the second day. Namely, in the southern direction of the Artsakh-Azerbaijan military operations, the Azerbaijani units are amassing in large groups directly at the length of the Artsakh-Iranian border (along the Araks River) and are trying to advance by factually taking cover with the border,” he said. He said this is a clear provocation by the Azeris trying to incite the Artsakhi forces to open fire or deliver strikes along the border, factually in the direction of Iran. Hovhannisyan didn’t rule out the possibility of these Azeri fighters retreating or fleeing into Iranian territory.“In order to avoid this all, we believe the Iranian side – which certainly is seeing this, must prevent or force the Azeris to refrain from such amassing,” he said.Editing and Translating by Stepan Kocharyan https://armenpress.am/eng/news/1030653.html?fbclid=IwAR3x2uxvmEnDInpgH1bHdjsG1cBJ6n15ATsZynxAlie-wg0cWR_HE76eirw
