RAID ON SO-CALLED HOTEL

Anadolu News Agency

07 June, 2001

RADIKAL (LEFT)

The Tourism Ministry cancelled the tourism management licence given to

Victor Bedoyan, an Armenian citizen who opened a hotel in eastern Van

province. The Ministry said that the conditions have changed while Bedoyan

will file a lawsuit in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Bedoyan

got the licence and two-star plate for his hotel named ''Vartan'' which

means victory in Armenian language, from the Tourism Ministry a week ago.

The Ministry cancelled the licence in a week. Tourism Minister Mumcu said

that the licence was cancelled because Bedoyan made some arrangements

contrary to the licence

Boghos this news was a very interesting news, have you more information about it?

For example did he also wanted to arrange an Armenian tour to those Eastern regions of contemporary Turkey. If that could happen it would have been very interesting.

I know of at least an instance where a group of Armenians from the diaspora went on a tour of Armenian sites in Anatolia, from Armenia (through Georgia, well understood). The mayor of Kars apparently arranged for a police escort of this group, these were ethnic Kurd. This was related to me by a participant.

As to the objectives of the owner of Hotel Vartan, I really have no more details. But this issue was apparently well discussed in the Turkish press.

It was indeed. Steve and I stopped by the Kayseri tourism information bureau today and it was being talked about at the desk there.
Hello, boys, I'm back.
