Nor Hayastan
Guys what do you think of us making the Armenian Genocide a more mainstream topic of conversation on April 24? A SIMPLE and yet powerful example, if we as young Armenian professionals... if we can ask Google to put a Genocide memorial on their main homepage (www.google.com), that IN ITSELF is a testiment to the power we hold as young professionals. Imagine all day on April 24, hundreds of millions of people who use google.com to search, will see Armenia's Genocide monument in the background of the Google logo, or even some other symbol, and it will provide a link to what happened on April 24, 93 years ago... just imagine that Google has done similar things in the past. St. Patrick's day, just recently that "turning off the lights" day (in which Google's homepage was blacked out), Martin Luther King day, etc... The question becomes, HOW can we urge those people working in northern California to change their homepage on that day??? http://www.google.com/logos/spring08.gif http://www.google.com/logos/stpatricks_08.gif http://www.google.com/logos/mlk08.gif http://www.google.com/logos/valentine08.gif This is their page for this google artwork: http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html Dennis Hwang is the creator of these logos, but I don't know who actually "approves" them. AVO
Excelant idea. We need mass mail campaign and a variety of logo's.
AVO
http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_60wht.gif Instead of OO's and L we could have the Tsitsernakaberd monument Edited April 2, 2008 by AVO
Zara
sounds cool. I think we need a logo that's not super controversial though, just because of approval issues. Edited April 2, 2008 by Zara
Nor Hayastan
and here's your L (to the right...) http://www.lib.uwo.ca/weldon/news/hottopics/images/armeniangenocidemonument.jpg But again, organization is not the real issue, it's the HOW in making this actually happen, that is the million dollar question... AVO
First we need the logo, once we have the logo we need a mail campaign, there are organizations that could help us.
Nor Hayastan
First we need the logo, once we have the logo we need a mail campaign, there are organizations that could help us. Well who has the right connections here???
Ashot
I can make the logo pretty simple!!! The first G should be replaced with the smaller one and the second g with the taller one!!! http://www.lib.uwo.ca/weldon/news/hottopics/images/armeniangenocidemonument.jpg what you guys think? HyeFedayis
Well I think we should tell them the idea, and they will create the logo.
Ashot
yup... not to forget we need the flag colors as well!!!
AVO
not in million years will they just do it if we ask them. You need thousands of people mailing them for them to even consider
Ashot
and a good sourced website that tells in details about the ag, plus
Ashot
Avo jan is that a fact?
Ashot
I would be happy even if they had only black ribbons!!!
AVO
Avo jan is that a fact? Ashot jan looking at their past commemorative logos I'm not convince that they would do it. For example they don't have a Holocaust or a VE day logos. Their logos mostly consist of American holidays and birthdays of famous people. So we need to be very persuasive, we need a lot of people to express their support and I'm sure turks are not gonna be fond of our campaign either. They might even block google if we succeed. AVO
I would be happy even if they had only black ribbons!!! Thats another idea, we could campaign not only for AG, but other tragedies as well. We would defiantly receive outside help.
Ashot
well, there is an option!!!
Ashot
we can collect all the resources, then find out exactly to whom well be sending the mass mails and posts, a day prior to doing so send out the e-mails and posts to have every Armenian across the planet to mail the same thing to google... if we do that organised then it will be very effective... the Furks will not have enough time to reply or do anything about it!!! AVO
You can't pull of something like that on the last day. You need weeks of preparation, a PR campaign. Even turks will be producing the negative PR
Ashot
no I am saying we need to prepare, then launch it in one or two days... way before april 24th!!! this year it's late, I am talking in general, offcourse we need a whole year for preparation, and a huge team!!!
AVO
I think we still have time and 3 weeks is more then enough. If we get the logo ready, PRing is very easy to do, especcialy for something like this. I already asked a friend if he can do it. We also have designers here in the forum. Ashot
I'll try to work on it tonight!!! see what I can come up with!!!
Sip
What motivation does Google have to do this? Google already has had to take some videos down from YouTube after Turkey completely blocked out YouTube traffic since the videos insulted their "turkishness" ... it's not hard to imagine what Turkey is going to do if you put something like that on the google front page You might have more luck with google.am though ... the whole point there would be to make the site more popular in Armenia and having something like that, will definitely increase traffic (at least in the short term). AVO
Start small, thats also a way to go. We can then campaign to spread to other localized googles.
vava
I like the idea of starting off with google.am - I don't think it's realistic to expect google to commemorate the Armenian Genocide simply because of an email campaign. Like it or not, this issue has been dramatically politicized - not just by various lobby groups, but also through American partisan politics. Google has next to no incentive (apart from doing the right thing), and compared to the potential firestorm it could cause for them, the upside is outweighed considerably by the risks. A better approach, one that poses less risk to google, is to include victims of ALL genocides in the "google" genocide memorial. This will hopefully be more acceptable politically, and will allow us the opportunity to include the AG as a key component, and by choosing April 24 as the commemorative date, the implications are clear. I think it's too late for this year, but with proper preparation, next year could be possible.
