MosJan
THE ARMENIAN DIASPORA SINGS: GARU - PIER HARANYAN Millions of pop fans know him as Canadian French-language singer Garu, but very few know that he has Armenian roots and that his real name is Pierre Garanyan. On June 26, 1972, little Pierre saw the rays of the sun rising over Quebec for the first time in his life and cried loudly. His grandmother Ketevi Garanyan held her grandson in her arms and quietly said, "Someday this voice will make more than one woman's heart cry." Like all grandmothers in the world, she was right. Pierre Garanyan, known today as Garu, was born in Sherbrooke, in northern Canada, to an ethnic Armenian family. "Until now, recalls Gara, I remember how my grandmother taught me to speak Armenian." "When you greet the elders," she said, "you have to be polite." Baby, repeat after me: barev des, inchpesek." He has memorized these words for his entire life. By the way, it was grandma who taught Gara to sing. When the baby was only three years old, his parents gave him a guitar. Two years later he began to master the piano and then the organ. It's very strange, but as a kid, Haru dreamed of becoming an archaeologist in order to discover something new. At first, Pierre was an approximate student of the Sherbrooke Seminary, but by the age of 14, something rebelled in him. Both parents and teachers tried to find common ground with him, but everything was to no avail. In 1987, Garu became the guitarist for a band of his classmates called "TheWindowsandDoors", and his first performance on stage was in a school hall. When Garu turned 15, he fell passionately in love with Sophie Balmond, a dancer from Montreal. He went to every one of her performances and every time he managed to sneak into her dressing room past security. Sophie allowed the young man to be beside her. "I only don't understand one thing," she asked, how do you manage to slip past the guards every time? ". Pierre joked: "It's because I'm a werewolf (Garu, which means "monster", "lone wolf", "werewolf") and I turn into a wolf and hop out of your window while no one can see." One way or another, the nickname "wirl" has stuck to Pierre forever. When Sophie introduced Pierre to her friend and Celine Dion co-husband Rene Angelil at one of the parties, she introduced: "This is Renee, and this is Garu - my charming little werewolf." When Rene Angelil offered Garu to perform something to his liking, Garu immediately jumped on the table and sang an Armenian tune. There was a coffin silence in the hall. When Garu stopped to cheer him up, a squall of applause broke out. Renee and Sophie applauded the loudest. Angelil said then, "One day you will be a big star." “I know, - without a second thought, answered Gara, - my grandmother told me that.” Years later, when composer Luc Plamondon was casting for his new production "Notre-DamedeParis", he was struck by the voice and appearance of one of the artists. In the room where the artists sang before the casting, one person sang some ethnic song. Plamondon suspected him. "What's your name? " - he asked. "Garu," said the young man. "Beautiful. Do you want to play frollo? "Only Quasimodo should play with such a name, and even more so with such a voice," - these words belonged to Rene Angelil. He and his wife Celine came for the audition and did not accidentally end up in the right place at the right time. He knew who he wanted to find there. In 3 months, a star with a truly global potential shone over Paris - the musical "Notre-DamedeParis". The inimitable Garu shone in the role of Quasimodo. For two years, Garu has played brilliantly by Quasimodo in "Notre-DamedeParis", moving from Montreal to Paris, from London to Brussels... In 1999, he received several prestigious awards for his role, including a WorldMusicAward for his song "Belle", which stayed at the top of the French charts for 33 weeks and was recognized as the best song of the fifties. In 2000, Garu and several stars of the French production, in particular Daniel Lavois and Bruno Pelletier, took part in the English production of the musical that became very popular. After the great success of "Notre-DamedeParis", already known to the general public, Garu receives a huge number of different offers and becomes truly famous. In 1998, he took part in the recording of the album "Ensemblecentrelesida" ("Together Against AIDS") and also sings the song "L"amourexisteencore" ("Love Still Exists") written by Plamondon and Kocchiant for Celine Dion, in a duet with the actress of Esmeralda Ellen Segar. In late 1999, Garu and the entire Notre-DamedeParis troupe took part in Celine Dion's New Year's show. At the same time, preparations were underway for her concert dedicated to Montreal. By the way, one of the best and most beautiful songs from his repertoire is "Souslevent" ("In the Wind") Garu performed in a duet with the magnificent Celine. Now this song is on the highest ranks of hit parades in French-speaking countries. Garu's solo career is progressing quite well now. His first album, "Seoul" sold over 2 million copies. In 2001 he gave more than eighty concerts, and his album "Seoul... avecvous became platinum in France and gold in Quebec. In March 2002, Garu gave a big concert at the Bercie stadium in Paris. And in spring 2003, his English-language album is planned to be released. Garu's grandmother was right when she predicted world recognition to her grandson 30 years ago. Brian Adameh, Celine Dion, Charles Aznavour and other outstanding performers are honored to sing with the talented Franco-Canadian Armenian. Garu as an artist stands out in French and worldwide popular music with his unruly appearance. This is a blue-eyed handsome giant, whose height is nearly two meters. He has a unique, inimitable and very rare strong voice with a snore and outstanding acting skills. It is no coincidence that he is often compared to such superstars of modern French cinema, such as Gerard Depardier and Jean Reno. Many may seem that Garu's creative biography was initially smooth and unblemished, that he is a true pamper of fate, that he immediately managed to find his own style, that he presented the world with his word from the very beginning. However, this is not true at all. He is in constant search, singing not only French chanson, but also songs of other different genres, including songs in the style of so-called “heavy” and “metallic” rock. As for the personal life of the singer, she cannot be called happy and cloudless. Although, Garu has always enjoyed great and consistent success among women, however, the super-busy pace of work leaves absolutely no free time for family matters and leisure. Probably this is where you should look for the reason why he left his wife Ulrika and daughter Emily. In one of his late interviews, Garu confesses that he constantly feels lonely in any society, in any environment. “I am very concerned with the clutter reigning in my personal life. Family is very important to me I never aspire to be a superstar. Sure I'm proud that Garu's career is evolving so rapidly, but I wish I could have stayed a normal person. Not a star. I think I've earned that right." When asked if such constant "nomadic" life, life on wheels, constant travels and tours, staying in hotels, the singer replies: "Yes, it satisfies. Me in my workaholic. For a long time I didn't know what a discipline was like until I found my own way to become disciplined. I only feel really good when I start singing. In France, I take all responsibility for contracts. I respond to proposals from various agencies, study scenarios, new proposals. So one needs to be very disciplined. During the day I am a real businessman, but in the evening my favorite time comes - the time to sing. And at night I go to another party". But how in this case does he manage to sleep, regain his strength, rest? After all, a man cannot do without sleep, without rest. He will just find himself unable to meet the trials and challenges of life. Garu himself gives the following answer to this question: “I sleep pretty little. I love a noisy restless life. Although sometimes there is an insurmountable need to run away somewhere, to find yourself. Then I really disappear, I'm not for anyone". Well, apparently this is the very feeling that keeps the singer from being truly happy. But it turns out he cannot change anything. The choice, and then final and irreversible, has already been made. Probably, it is for such cases that there is an expression: there is no absolute idyll in life. When the singer is asked if he remembers his Armenian origins, that his real name is Pierre Garanyan, he replies: "Of course, I remember. Of course, Pierre Garanyan still exists for me. And always will be. However, he was a little crushed by Gara, although initially this nickname was not an artistic pseudonym”. Today he is called Pierre, in his own words, very few - only three people. This is his banker, mother and sister. As far as a father is concerned, he, like many other fathers, calls him “Son.” While stars line up to sing with Gar the French line up to watch him. One Parisian newspaper wrote that for the first time after Napoleon God settled in France. When a singer is asked today what is the secret of his success, Garu replies: "Do you really think the werewolf will tell you the truth? But i think i'm ***ing talented. My grandma used to say that."
