Did Wwi Ottomans Take Pows??

This is one thing I have never really heard from British, Commonwealth and Anzacs other than they just retreated or just surrendered. Is that really all?? Many of the Allies could barely get off the beach in the relatively small areas of the Gallipoli landings, its impossible for hundreds to suddenly dissapear without a trace... Neither would the Allies fight to the last man.

 

From what little I gathered, the failed Mesopotamia campaign by the Allies seems to have state that POWs taken by Ottomans ended with the same fate of Armenians. In WWI documentaries British survivors discribed that Ottomans forced the POWs into a Bataan style treatment.

 

But what of the Gallipoli POWs? Did they return alive? Did Ottomans tried to find which is christian and dismember the POW?

 

This administration of Ataturk is too suspicious, the behaviours of ultranationalists especially by the Young Turks seem to say "ulterior motives" everywhere.

Erickson barely cover this chapter, most of the problem rises with the fact that the military archive is only recently available. Probably future works will cover this.

I agree with you Domino, these are recent and more research needs to be done. Although I have a lack of knowledge about these specific issues, like julian said, there were ulterior motives behind this. We can be sure people were kidnapped, treat horribly under the severest conditions thought by men HOWEVER me must NOT call them POW's! This provides another holding point for the turks to argue the Genocide as a war instead of a one sided massacre of the innocent.

 

 

P.O.W.-Prisoner of War. A person who surrenders to (or is taken by) the enemy in time of war.

 

Armenian were certainly not POW's because there was no war. It was a one sided annihilation of a specific group of poeple based on their religion and culture, a GENOCIDE.

Oh did I confuse something? I meant the British and Commonwealth alliance who where fighting the Ottomans. Certainly there where instances where regiments of Anzacs and British troops that where encircled, and its hard to believe the Anzacs and British are the kind that would fight to the last man.
