How To Catch A Thief?

Perhaps some of you had similar experiences or can come up with interesting ideas. I have a new supervisor who is a bit of a scatterbrain, who has her own office. Also, in our office there is a woman who is a bit absentminded, she keeps her money bundled up or scrunged up together thrown in the purse with the rest of the stuff.

One day our supervisor approaches us and says that someone is stealing money and she is convinced it's our cleaning guy. She said that the first two times she was unsure and the third time she knew that she had a $20 in her pocketbook. When she returned to her office (which was locked and the cleaning guy was seen, by one of my coworkers, walking in but didn't take the garbage out), the money was gone. After she confessed the other absent-minded coworker confessed that she had some money missing, twice she thought that it was her carelessness, the third time she was sure she had the money which disappeared.

Now, all of this sounds somewhat convincing in determining the culprit, but there are a few things that make it difficult to believe that he committed the act.

1. The cleaning guy has a little child and once introduced us all to his wife and the toddler, it's hard to believe that he would risk his job and his reputation to steal some measly $40.

2. There are 5 of us in the office. One other coworker claimed that her $40 disappeared once, but she wasn't sure. And the rest of us never had any missing money. Me and another woman keep our bags on top of our desks, my wallet is pretty much exposed, the third woman has her forgotten her wallet on top of her desk and had no money missing.

3. There were no other cases reported in the entire facility when someone was missing money.

4. I decided to play a trick. I wrinkled a $5 bill and threw it on the floor, right under my chair, it looked as if it dropped from my pocket. When he was coming into the office all of us left, leaving him alone with our purses and the $5. He personally brought the money to me and with an ambiguous look said "Here."

My supervisor filed a report and to us she said that she is certain that it's the cleaning guy.

Do you think that the trick with $5 was too soon after the missing money from my boss, or was it too little? Or did it seem like a trap to him? Would he have picked up the $5 if he really was the thief? How else can it be done?

I also know that my supervisor doesn't really like him...

Your thoughts?

Even if it was him, the evidences pointing to him are not enough. What you have described with the 5$ bill, what I could gatter is that it is possible he knows he's been suspected. The ambiguous look and more particularly the "here" could be a defense mechanism, a reaction after being suspected. So the noises about the missing money reached him.

Personally I think the 5$ was a bad very bad idea to know if it was him. He is the cleaning guy and a 5$ like this on the floor, it is obvious that he was the "targeted", people who suspect that they are suspected don't take such bites, to the contrary they'll try proving that they are trustworthy. The "here" on the other hand is suspicious. I mean, you truly find some money which you believe someone lost, you would rather say: "I found this right under your chair", "here" could presuppose that he know that you know that you dropped that money and he does not need to justify. But this does not mean that he is the one having stealed money, it could just mean that he knows that he is suspected. It would have helped if you would have told him: "Why you are giving me 5$" In those situations more you make them speak more you can gatter informations from their reactions, what they say etc.

Now, the question is that if it is found that he is the one, what will be done, if he will be fired, it is better that strong evidences and not some suspicions, this is not enough. If it is only money which is missing, I think it is harsh, if some work equipments are missing, then it is more problematic. If you really want to catch him in action, it is not that hard, your superviser could then warn the guy and tell him that he is given a chance sometimes this is enough.

Short of "entrapment", there's not much you can do. Get a cheap webcam and monitor the premises. Don't tell anyone, since anybody there could have taken the money...

BTW the family thing doesn't mean much - I've seen people steal who don't even need the money. It's a compulsion. At a previous job we had someone on staff who was shoplifting from a store (the store was our client for marketing strategy & materials). They caught her though the video system (they had been "following her for months" and had amassed hours of incriminating video). She was stealing nearly 500$ worth of stock every week - yet she was making more $$ than I was... She seemed like the furthest thing from a thief - mother of two, 'devout' catholic, always willing to lend a hand etc. Quite shocking until you saw the footage.

Completely forgot about this topic. Nothing happened so far, I am curious if he became a little scared and stopped, or if it never happened to begin with. You guys are right, a culprit can have the most innocent profile yet be guilty as heck. I just wish I had some detective powers, or capabilities. A friend of mine works for the state and conducts criminal investigations, mainly auto fraud, she can certainly help me out on many occasions, but she is extremely by the book and isn't the type of person to help out to begin with.

She is one of those people who claims that you are her best friend, but never in a million years would help. Egh people. I had some car situation with some thugs who hated that I changed the lane in front of them (they saw the blinker but decided to speed up, apparently not fast enough because I managed to change the lane). At the red light they pulled next to my car and started calling me, I ignored, they threw something at my window and started shouting profanities, I called the cops to give them their plates number but they can't do anything unless I was physically injured, the ghettos figured out that I was trying to get their plates so they stayed behind and wouldn't pass.

I asked my friend if she could run the plate and see if they had a criminal record of some kind, why would they be scared of letting me see their plates? She said that she CAN do it, but it's not right. Meanwhile the state is such an irresponsible institution to begin with, that's why there is so much fraud in the first place.

Three things:

1. Cops are the worst creatures invented. All they care about are giving speeding tickets. They are essentially worthless pieces of shyt. If you want justice, it begins by watching Charles Bronson in Death Wish I-V

2. Black people are dangerous, even when driving.

3. The State is the reason for 1 and 2.

Completely agree with all of the above.

The 3rd one is painful to admit, but I think I am turning into a racist. I've had so many bad incidents, even threats...Sometimes you just get tired and surrender to social stereotypes.

Stereotypes are a defense mechanism. As long as you don't let it consume your view of a given group, I see nothing wrong with them.

Cops are what happens when children get picked on in school. They end up relying on an artificially established position of power to counter balance the lack of control they felt and would feel otherwise.

Socially, lower income groups of people (the youth in particular) seem to have created the need to prove themselves in every other way except intellectual advancement. This is due mostly to being convinced that they are currently victims of a greater system (the government, history, white people). That leads to general agressive behavior because people have the need to achieve higher status even when the social or intellectual opportunities are not in play. That's why they'd drive like morons.

Oh yea? How the hell do you explain Asian drivers then?

I think it's a matter of genes. Their eyes have poor peripheral vision and as they get older they suffer from a tightening of the neck muscles that prevents them from turning their heads.

Did you guys ever read the Hardy Boys? Those well behaved clean cut kids... Now they have grammar books that teach kids proper structure by having sentences like "My brother is a butthead," or "I want to burp." And then we wonder why 7 year old kids are taking guns to school.

Back to Asian drivers, I would argue that the worst drivers are men, ethnicities can only change the degrees. Every time I see an accident on the road or some insane driver harassing other drivers, or cutting people off (usually big cars or sports cars with tinted windows). I blame it on the testosterone!

Women generally tend to be very passive and cautious drivers, but I've witnessed more severe accidents occurring because of someone's wild rush to speed or dominate the road than someone driving 20mph.

I disagree. Not 'cause I'm a man, though. I think most problems occur when you're combining "wild/fast" drivers on the same roads as "passive/cautious" drivers. It's the difference in driving technique & reaction that often result in some sort of crash. If everyone is driving fast, and in a similar way, movement is fairly uniform, reactions are predictable and so, there's less variation on the road. When you combine the different type of drivers, you end up with varied reactions and stability, less predictability and the end result is more road conflict.

Personally, I'd rather drive with someone going fast, who is aware of their vehicle, the road, and what's happening around them, then someone who's driving slow, but is afraid and uncomfortable behind the wheel and reluctant to react to the environmental conditions and other drivers.

This is a veeeery typical argument from a man. Most accidents I see happen among young men, and I mean both young men collide. It's very rare when I see a passive driver with a wild one and that's the reason for a crash. 2 accidents I can recall, which happened right before me. A young man driving on a local street in a sports car, going too fast another one turning from the stop sign, both crashed into each other because both were agressive. Another one happened because one driver was anxious to beat the red light and the other one was anxious and took off early, both collided. I see this stuff all the time, usually an accident between 2 or more men.

And I am not saying this BECAUSE I'm a woman, it's just I've been hearing this theory of women being such bad drivers that I became cautious, but I still don't see it. Just what I said, passive. I am more assertive and men get really irritated when I take a stand, I even had a few young punks trying to race with me, because they thought I was inviting them to do the fast and the furious thing, and mainly because they wanted to eventually get ahead of me. I had this one fat cabbie, who was such a nasty one that he wouldn't let me into the lane, and I had to switch because the lane was blocked, he literally brushed against my side mirror just not to let me in.

You can't really win, if you are a woman who is a passive driver men are irritated, if you are an assertive, men hate it. The few brushes with dangerous situations happened to me with male drivers who abruptly would switch lanes, not look when they do, pass the red light, try to squeeze in in front of you, or ones on the interstate highway we had this dude in a van who was basically harassing every car on the road by tailing them so close that if you slow down there would be a crash. Anyhoo....I am right about this.

blah blah blah

I see women do stupid crap just as often as the men.

If there is any actual evidence other than a feminists "observations" about men getting into more accidents, it's probably because men exercise their driving skills to not collide with stupid women.

I really don't care about giving you any evidence whatsoever, I am absolutely correct, thus I have to prove nothing.

You are just like every other male driver on the defense and offence at the same time. Can't be on both teams at once, men can't multitask well.

I'm trying to be fair here and say they're equally bad. You're still doing the typical, uptight women, I'm-going-to-prove-that-men-suck-in-every-possible-way routine. It's ridicluous.

I am a god at multitasking when I drive. You should see me drum on my steering wheel with drumsticks while driving. It's very impressive. The stupid chick to my left trying to put make-up on... not impressive... just stupid.

Well this is just stupid. I never once said I'm-going-to-prove-that-men-suck-in-every-possible-way routine. All I did was mention driving, and this is not about diplomacy, this is statistics. More accidents among young men between the ages of 18-35 than anyone else.

You didn't have to say it.

I thought you didn't have to prove anything. Now out comes "statistics."

Chicken drumsticks!

Tried that. Dirties the car. Especially with Buffalo wings. Switched to the real drumsticks.

I never implied, if that's what you are implying. And don't assume.

I didn't have to prove anything, I just mentioned that I have the truth on my side.

I much prefer buffalo wings to real drumsticks, I think they taste much better.
