too good if so !

they will "rectifiy" their image back to "reality" in European Televisions, after they tried to tell that "we are all armenians" after Hrant Dink's murder.

One has to be pretty daft to think that saying "We are Armenians" at a funeral equates to saying "Dirty State, recognise the genocide!" or even "I wanna be an Armenian!"... Some might acknowledge the genocide, others not. I see no contradiction in the situation. Whatever the case, bear in mind that there can be as many opinions as people - even in Israel.

The Turks are not going to happy, especially after what the Armenians did after Turks tried to advertize their country with a DVD in Time..

Part advertising - part thinly veiled propoganda. I think the strategy, and the overall brou-haha especially in countries like Switzerland and France has ultimately back-fired on the Turks. I'd like to know how this "rectification" was funded. Was it Time magazine itself? Perhaps faced with litigation and an obvious editorial oversight, seeking to correct the situation (I highly doubt it). Or was this in itself a paid campaign backed by Armenian supporters?

If the latter is the case, then it simply becomes tit-for-tat and for European readers, the credibility behind the "factual statement" is somewhat called into question. Why believe advertising - whether it comes from Turks or Armenians? We should be careful not to descend into that "tit-for-tat" type of tactic, as it is playing into the hands of the denialists. Their objective is to open the issue for "debate", and that's what we do every time we engage in this type of PR war.

I truly hope that this was a clear rectification on the part of Time Europe, as it would have a definitive impact upon the previous "advertising" message delivered by Turkey last year.

Perhaps "We are Armenians" acknowledges that problem exists within Turkey with respect to ethnic minorities. I don't think it has a direct link to genocide recognition, but more so it may be an indicator that the Turkish people are ready to tolerate opinions that counter the traditional government line. This could be seen abroad as a certain amount of progress.

A large Turkish protest against the Time rectification could undo any perception of progress, and would re-enforce the image already upheld by arcane Turkish legislative acts (like 301) of a nationalist, intolerant, and yes, un-European society.

thats what i meant, i hope there is no misunderstanding.

however i must say that there is lot of "marketing" in europe since the assasination and some are likely to "understand" what they want to hear (don't forget that turks are their neighbours). ("oh look turks are not that bad, they are victime of nationalists in their own country." blabla, that's what we hear in television every 2nd day (especially in german). But that's not the topic here....

PRESS RELEASE

TIME Magazine Distributes Documentary;

Adopts Policy on the Armenian Genocide

The Feb. 12, 2007 issue of the European edition of TIME magazine -- available in newsstands throughout

Europe as of Feb. 2nd -- carries a full-page factual announcement on the Armenian Genocide, along with

a complimentary DVD, in English and French, which contains a compelling 52-minute documentary on the

Armenian Genocide by French director Laurence Jourdan. The DVD also includes a 46-minute interview

with Dr. Yves Ternon, a leading expert on the Armenian Genocide.

Both the DVD and the full-page ad were provided free of charge by TIME Europe (circulation 550,000)

after realizing that its staff, without proper review, had inserted in the June 6, 2005 issue of TIME Europe

a Turkish DVD as a paid advertisement under the guise of promoting tourism to Turkey. The Turkish DVD,

paid for by the Ankara Chamber of Commerce, was a deceitful attempt to spread malicious lies and

denialist propaganda on the Armenian Genocide.

To correct this error, TIME (Europe) published, in its October 17, 2005 issue, a critical page-long letter to

the editor jointly signed by the following five French organizations: Memoire 2000, the Coordinating

Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF), Comité de Défense de la Cause Arménienne

(CDCA) -- ANC France, J'Accuse, and the Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Among Peoples

(MRAP). In an Editor's note appended to the letter, TIME apologized for disseminating the Turkish DVD.

In December 2005, these five organizations along with the Switzerland-Armenia Association (SAA), the French Association of Armenian Lawyers and Jurists (AFAJA), the European-Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD), and The California Courier newspaper reached an amicable agreement with TIME executives ensuring that the facts of the Armenian Genocide are not distorted again in the pages of the magazine.

Subsequently, Michael Elliott, the Editor of TIME International, issued the following public statement:

"Please be advised that, in common with other leading news organizations, it is TIME's policy and practice

to refer to the Armenian genocide as a historical fact. Accordingly, I will be informing our correspondents

and editors that the term 'Armenian genocide' should be used without qualification."

The above mentioned organizations are fully satisfied with the corrective steps taken by TIME magazine.

They are also pleased that the Turkish attempt to distort the facts of the Armenian Genocide, supported

by considerable financial resources, was properly countered as a result of these organizations' close

cooperation with TIME which placed journalistic ethics above all other considerations.

Perhaps "We are Armenians" acknowledges that problem exists within Turkey with respect to ethnic minorities

It is nothing more than a fake call for solidarity, so dearly needed in the turkish society. Nothing more and the slogan itself is a good PR. Showing a generous and compationate face of the modern turks who want to be part of Europe. Laughable! But Europeans generally buy this stuff. We don't. We know them for too long.

As to Time...I think no matter what, the Armenian organizations in Europe should initiate a legal proceedings against Time-Euorope for spreading false, inaccurate information about the events in 1915 in Ottoman Turkey.

Yes, but neither reference claims to have funded the DVD/rectification. And there is no mention of the result of the lawsuit brought against Time, and whether this was part of a settlement.

Both the DVD and the full-page ad were provided free of charge by TIME Europe (circulation 550,000)

As for the 2nd question, the lawsuite did not take place, as Time Executives and the claiming organisatons reached to an agreement.

The above mentioned organizations are fully satisfied with the corrective steps taken by TIME magazine.

Time magazine had no other choice but to correct this mistake because the Armenian genocide is first and foremost a race killing, mass murder, mass deportation call it whatever you want, where the Turks loose ground is in their downplaying of the above (even without the genocide argument). From what we read and hear Turks complaining about the issue of genocide recognition, they come across as not only disagreeing with "genocide" but also disagreeing that they did anything wrong. In their campaign ofcountering "armenian claims" they tell the world what happened was simply a self defense, backstabbing Armenians had to be dealt with "they did it to us so we did it to them", with such attitude they really come asross as apologists for criminals.

They show no remorse and refuse to admit a colossal injustice that Armenians experienced, this is the primary reason why Armenian efforts are achieving results. Faced with this reality Time had no choice but to counter the Turkish propaganda.

As for the "100,000" in the streets of Istanbul is concerned, I think the feelings were genuine, although it cannot be ruled out that some government circles found an opportunity for good publicity to show Europe that the society is mature and conscientious. I wonder who funded and printed all those uniform white-on-black placards.

But nonetheless I think the sentiments were genuine, and a very courageous show of solidarity by Turks marching like that. The simple reality is that in Turkey "being Armenian" borders on insult. A few years ago we witnessed the outpour of disgust in Turkey by a mere suggestion by a Turksih newspaper that Ataturk's adopted girl (who became famous as the country's first female pilot) could have been of Armenian origin. I bet had article 301 existed then, Karinciz would have been busy prosecuting the author. So to say "we are all Armenians" is no small thing.

I'd like to see this in America's TIME as well. Their "mention" of Hrant Dink's murder was pretty pathetic. If not a full article, then at least they should've written about him in Milestones section is a separate box (as they've done a number of times).

I think you make the issue too contrasted, too black-or-white with respect to the topic of Armenian genocide recognition. There are many Turks/Turkish citizens who for one reasoning or the other do not want the issue handled the way it is. Some believe the Armenian genocide is a lie - and this for a number of reasons - others, a minority, believe it is wrong for other bodies to handle the topic when it should be resolved in-house. Dink was of the latter camp, whether he believed it for real or thought it to be the most practical, realistic, what have you, route, though I don't think you'd find him protesting either the French parliament or Time on the streets. Still, nothing undoes the other.
