Sergey Khachatryan

I went to see him in concert at Lincoln Center on Saturday. This was my birthday present from SO and the best one so far! I can't tell you how severely I was captivated by this young man. This was his first debut in New York and how well NY received him! Standing ovation, "Bravo!" and so much of it that he was forced to play again. He performed his own composition which he dedicated to his parents.

 

I am really not too impressed by the music or art culture, and what I mean by that is that I don't like to learn about the person behind the art. They are all usually a lot different than the music they produce and I become disappointed. It's important to keep art separate from the person, and that is what I choose to do. I would love to believe that he's so humble and kind, because he appeared that way. He spoke great English but seemed a little shy when he was speaking in front of the entire concert hall.

 

I was in complete awe watching him next to older and more experienced musicians. It was such a vision, a young, skinny, gentle boy in black trousers and a black shirt, with thick curly hair and a violin which was more piercing and more beautiful than any other instrument in the entire hall. I had knots in my stomach and goose bumps. And I was sooo proud. Maybe because he's my brother's age, maybe because he's Armenian, maybe because he's humble, or maybe just because his music transcended emotional and physical spheres. I know I am getting carried away here, but I simply cannot be less descriptive.

 

Even if you are not a fan of classical music, if Khachatryan is performing near you, it's an absolute must for you to see him. He's absolutely brilliant. I guarantee that you won't remain indifferent.

Evelina, I was in the same emotional state as you when I heard him perform in LA with his sister. You're right, there aren't enough words to exclaim the great feeling of pride and awe as I heard him play. And he's sooo humble it's unbelievable. Nowadays we're used to stuck-up young performers who think they're the best thing they could happen to our world. I'm so proud of Sergey, the fact that he's Armenian, and he's young, and he's a Classical Musician, and he's so talented.

SERGEY KHACHATRYAN, FINE-TUNING HIS TALENT

Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan (born 1985) is hot. By age 20

he had won both the Sibelius and Queen Elizabeth competitions. He

has released several recordings of major concertos, appeared here

in 2006 at the Kennedy Center with the London Philharmonic, and has

already soloed three times with the Cleveland Orchestra. Given such a

résumé, expectations were high for his recital Tuesday night at the

Harman Center for the Arts with his pianist sister Lusine Khachatryan.

 

This young artist is undeniably talented. There was never the

slightest sense of difficulty on the instrument, even in the thorniest

passage-work. His slacker persona seemed to perfectly capture the irony

and alienation in Shostakovich's late violin sonata. But for the rest,

this is a violinist who still has a lot of studying, listening and

growing to do. His style is often plodding, almost sullen (jet lag?),

and he seems at times unaware or indifferent to basic musical details.

 

In the Bach Sonata in C, he kept admirably precise rhythm (without

speeding up) in the Adagio, but there was no variation in character or

articulation in the extended Fuga. Voice-leading was almost nonexistent

in the Largo, and he didn't bother with the repeats in the Allegro

assai. In the Brahms Op. 78 Sonata, his vibrato began to grate --

tense, but stopping and starting on each note. His sister had trouble

with repeated notes in the Brahms finale, but otherwise played with

accuracy and sensitivity.
