Eva
Can anybody tell me, why do people lie." To lie is to say something one believes to be false with the intention it be taken for truth." Why would one person lie to the opposite one deliberately to gain something or to hurt that person???
Yervant1
Why would one person lie to the opposite one deliberately to gain something or to hurt that person??? There are million and one reasons why people lie, this is one of them. Sometimes lies are also used for good intentions, they are called white lies. Takoush
Or when a spouse has an affair with someone else and lies to his or her spouse so that the other party doesn't throw all the clothes out the window or worse yet divorce or starts fooling around with others too. Anoushik
Why would one person lie to the opposite one deliberately to gain something or to hurt that person??? I don't think it's necessarily to gain something or to hurt another. It's about protecting the future of the relationship with that person, be it a lover, friend, collegue, or a relative. Most people can't handle the truth; they'd rather hear a lie. To my great disdain I find that as one gets older and more mature in life, one starts lying more often. Yervant1
To my great disdain I find that as one gets older and more mature in life, one starts lying more often. IMO lying got nothing to do with age and everything to do with character.
ExtraHye
People lie because they know what they're doing is wrong or know will hurt the person next to them, but they still want to do it anyway.
Sip
Sometimes you have to lie. Sometimes you should lie. Sometimes you want to lie. Sometimes you don't know you are lying. And sometimes you tell a small lie so that you don't have to tell a bigger lie. Why? Because as strange as it sounds, there are many occasions that with lies, everyone can be a lot happier than with truth. Truth is quite overrated at times. Anoushik
right, and why would they need to do that? Because maturity brings insight into a person's character - one's own and others. The lie I'm talking about has to do with that.

Anoushik
IMO lying got nothing to do with age and everything to do with character. O yes, there are those who lie left and right. They lie about important things and they lie about trivial things. But the lie I'm thinking about, the lie about another person's being (or rather not being truthful about another person's being, actions, how they affect you, etc.) comes with maturity, hence with age. Anoushik
Because maturity brings insight into a person's character - one's own and others. The lie I'm talking about has to do with that. And to finish my thought - why the need to lie? Because in this case telling the truth would alienate the other person. I guess it's called being tactful.
DominO123
Sometimes you don't know you are lying. I disagree with this one. If you don't know you are lying, you are mistaken, which is different than lying.
Maral
sometimes one lies cause 'it ain't any of your business' you either say It's none of your business or you make something up and move on I guess we can't guess as to why someone lied until we know what the lie was,and then we can give you reasons why they did it. For example....The answer to 'honey does this dress make me look fat' is 'no honey you look gorgeous!',if it's said convincingly enough will make for a good time the person lied to make their mate feel good,no harm done.We all own mirrors,we know when we look good in an outfit or not Edited December 19, 2006 by Maral

Sip
I disagree with this one. If you don't know you are lying, you are mistaken, which is different than lying. That's probably what classifies you as an intelligent and logical person. Try to explain that to a woman that's mad at you for something.
