Armenian Typewriters

Բարեւ ձեզ,

This may seem odd as a first post (yes, this is my first post here), but I'm wondering if there is such a thing as an Armenian typewriter... Կը յիշէ՞ք այդ հի՜ն մեքենաները: I know this forum is about Science and Technology and this isn't exactly cutting edge technology, but... ^_^ Anyway, has anyone here actually seen an Armenian typewriter? I love to collect old things, and I'd love to get my hands on an Armenian typewriter... Բայց ո՞ւր գտնել, եթէ կան:

Շնորհակալութիւն

Welcome Alex :) Barev

Typewriters certainly aren't in demand these days. If an Armenian model does exist - I have never heard of one myself - it's probably gathering dust in someone's attic. I hope you manage to find one; and if you do, please post a pic for the rest of us to admire...

Vava, Edward, thanks for your replies.

I'm happy to hear Armenian typewriters actually exist.

Vava, that's what I'm hoping for, that someone will have one in their attic :) Եթէ գտնեմ, վստահ եղէք, որ նկարը հոս կը դնեմ: :)

Edward, thanks for the offer... May is pretty far away, we'll see until then. ;)

I'll try to send an e-mail to a few Armenian schools and community centres in Canada... Who knows. Some of them were around in the 70s... They must've used typewriters back then...

By the way, how do you say "typewriter" in Armenian? Գրամեքենա(յ)? I can't find anything in Google, but that may be because nobody thought to write about a typewriter in Armenian... It isn't a very recent piece of technology, after all...

Meanwhile, if anyone reads this post and has an Armenian typewriter or knows someone who does and who would be willing to sell it, please reply. :)

I don't know if the Western ones exist but the Eastern ones you can certainly get in Armenia.

Another note: we are not as backward as you think, Armenians had the second highest number of PhDs compared to the population ratio in the former Soviet Union (of course after Jews ;). My point is that it's not that hard to put together a type writer with all the brainpower.

Great. I don't think Eastern or Western would make a difference, since we all use the same letters...

I didn't say I thought Armenia was backward. :) I know almost nothing about Armenia during the Soviet era, and I thought that maybe people used Russian instead of Armenian for official business... I guess I was wrong (and I'm happy I was wrong). ;)

It's funny - was making the same assumption. I've always been led to believe that being under the yoke of a soviet SSR has stymied cultural growth/sustanance...

Alex, are you still here?

Some time ago, before the advent of the internet and ArmFont, when I was in need of Armenian type I found one at the llocal church.

There may still be some in their dusty store rooms.

Good luck!

Which reminds me... never mind!
