Nané
If you appreciate liturgical music then you will be familiar with Lusine Zakarian's heavenly voice. Her repertoire was extensive. She sang in 15 languages. She chose a selection of works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Verdi, Schubert and many other western composers. For 35 years she was the soprano soloist of the Catherdal of Holy Ejmiatsin. Whenever she took part in the Holy Liturgy her song was a prayer. She performed Armenian hymns (the armenian hymnery contains 1,200 songs) and songs collected by Komitas. She passed away in 1992 (at the age of 55). Her CD's are available at some Armenian Record stores. You can also download it on Napster. Sulamita777
Pilafhead
I have an album from 1969 of her first recordings made in the US (put out by Tekeyan). I REALLY want to like it, but I don't. I've tried...I've never been a fan of that style of Armenian singing. Too operatic. It has a great cover, though! Go ahead, say it: I'm a loser... P.S. I just got the Sayat Nova 2000 CDs. I really hoping there's somthing great amongst the 20 songs. (keeping my fingers crossed). P.P.S. Datevik rules! Nothing like a scat version of Shalakho!!! raffiaharonian
I had the pleasure and honor to hear one of her performances , when she visited our school "Melkonian" in Cyprus. She was great and we loved her. The whole audience loved her and cheered her several times. Then in 1986 we had the honor to sing with her in Sourp Echmiadzin with our school's choir at the presence of the late 'yerchangahishadag' Vazken I Catholicos. Her "Sourp-Sourp" still echoes in my ears. I'll never forget her! Garo, thank you for the site. I'll try it!
