CANADIAN SOCCER TEAM TO MEET ARMENIA IN CYPRUS

Tert.am

18.01.12

The Canadian men's national team will play Armenia in an international

friendly on Feb. 29 in Cyprus.

The match, announced by the Canadian Soccer Association on Tuesday,

takes place on the first FIFA International Date of the 2012 calendar

year. The neutral site match will be the first meeting between the

two nations, Sportsnet.ca reported.

Canada coach Stephen Hart revealed the Armenia game was arranged

after plans to play New Zealand in London, England fell through.

"Armenia (was) an option presented to us. I did some quick homework

on them (and) saw that they were a very effective attacking team,

and I thought they would be a really good (opponent) for us," Hart

told reporters during a conference call.

Although it failed to earn a tournament berth, Armenia posted an

impressive 5-2-3 record in Euro 2012 qualifying, finishing third in

its group behind Russia and Ireland. Armenia currently sits 46th in

the FIFA world rankings, compared to 72nd-place Canada.

Hart believes Armenia presents a stiff challenge for Canada in terms

of its preparation ahead of the next round of World Cup qualifiers

in June.

"If you look at their individual players, they have a lot of

attack-minded players that are at top clubs who have Champions League

and Europa League experience," Hart stated. "Those players are very

tricky, very dynamic, and I thought it would be healthy for our

players to get some one-on-one match-ups against them."

Because MLS teams will be in pre-season training camps in February,

Hart expects to rely heavily on European-based players for the match in

Cyprus. Some European-based national team members may not be available,

so Hart didn't rule out calling up MLS players.

One player who likely won't be in Cyprus is Atiba Hutchinson, Canada's

star midfielder with Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. Hutchinson aggravated

a knee injury while playing for Canada during a World Cup qualifier

against St. Lucia last September, and has only recently returned to

training with PSV.

"He played about 10 minutes in a reserve game (so) I don't think

he'll be ready for this game," Hart admitted.

The Canadian coach revealed there are maybe one or two players who

have not appeared for the national before that he is considering for

this match, but the Canadian coach declined to offer any names.

Canada has made it through to third round of the CONCACAF qualifiers

for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Reds will compete in a

round-robin group with Cuba, Honduras and Panama where the top two

teams will advance to the final round of CONCACAF qualification.

The Reds' first match is on the road against Cuba on June 8, followed

by a home game (at an as-of-yet to be determined host city) against

Honduras on June 12.

Hart said he hopes to gather his squad together in a training camp

once the European club season is over and organize another exhibition

match in late May or early June as a tune-up for the Cuba match.

Canada's only previous World Cup appearance came in 1986 in Mexico

where it bowed out if the first round after suffering three shutout

losses.

ARMENIA OUTCLASSES CANADA IN MEN'S SOCCER FRIENDLY. ARMENIA 3:1 CANADA

CBC.ca

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2012/02/29/sp-canada-armenia-friendly.html

Feb 29 2012

Canada

Canada started brightly but eventually paid the price for some slack

play as Brazilian-born Marcos Pizzelli scored twice to give Armenia

a 3-1 win in a soccer friendly Wednesday in Cyprus.

Captain Kevin McKenna gave Canada a fifth-minute lead but the Armenians

took control as the game wore on and had far more scoring chances.

Armenia is ranked 41st in the world, compared to No. 71 for Canada.

The Canadians came into the match riding a seven-game unbeaten string.

Their last loss was 2-0 to the U.S. in Detroit in June 2011.

McKenna opened the scoring by taking advantage of some poor Armenia

marking on a corner. A defender was late to notice McKenna, who rose

and headed in the Julian de Guzman delivery past veteran goalkeeper

Roman Berezovsky.

It was the 11th goal for Canada by the 32-year-old defender from

Calgary, who has seen action as a forward in the past.

Pizzelli slotted the ball wide in the 11th minute after a raking

cross found him unmarked in the Canadian penalty box.

Armenia tied it in the 23rd minute when Pizzelli's left-footed shot

from just outside the penalty box slotted inside the post past a

diving Milan Borjan.

The goal came after Canada lost possession in midfield and capped a

good run of play for the Armenians, who took their time getting into

the match.

Armenia continued to press after tying the score. And another Canadian

giveaway in the 30th minute forced Borjan to knock a shot on target

away.

Borjan stopped a shot from Yura Movsisyan in the 38th after Armenia

slashed through the Canadian defence. Atiba Hutchinson quickly looked

to reply for the Canadians, banging a shot wide.

An onrushing Borjan had to stop a Movsisyan shot at the edge of the

box late in the half.

The largely empty stadium was buffeted by wind and rain as the first

half wore on.

Kenny Stamatopoulos replaced Borjan in goal for the opening of the

second half as Canadian coach Stephen Hart began to rotate in players.

Movsisyan looked to test Stamatopoulos early but sent his shot wide.

Canada had a chance to go ahead in the 58th on a free kick but Tosaint

Ricketts was unable to get his head on a de Guzman delivery.

Defender David Edgar had to clear the ball off the line in the 66th

minute after Movsisyan took advantage of yet another giveaway and

went around Stamatopoulos.

But Armenia scored on the ensuing corner. After Stamatopoulos cleared

the ball with a punch, an Armenian fired a shot off the post and

Pizzelli poked in the rebound in the 67th.

It was the seventh goal in 19 matches for Pizzelli, who plays his

club soccer in Russia for FC Kuban Krasnodar.

Turkish-born Aras Ozbiliz, who plays for Ajax, made it 3-1 on an

injury-time penalty after Mike Klukowski took down an Armenian driving

at the goal.

Canada offered little on offence other than on set plays.

Armenia failed to quality for Euro 2012 but still managed a 5-3-2

record in finishing third in its group behind Russia and Ireland. And

the Armenians led the group in scoring with 22 goals.

Armenia showed flashes of its attacking skill against Canada, probing

the defence with runs and passes. But its finishing was sub-par on

the day.

Armenia brought 31 players to its Cyprus camp, using a different

lineup in a 2-0 loss to No. 25 Serbia on Tuesday. Hart's 18-man squad

featured 16 European-based players.

It was Canada's first game since a November win over St. Kitts and

Nevis in World Cup qualifying play.

Canada plays a friendly against the U.S. in Toronto in June before

opening the next round of World Cup qualifying.

ESPN3 streams them live and has full replay, all for free.

For some reason we have not been able to view it on ESPN. It might be due to filters enforced by our IT. But we did find another website - www.hahasport.com - that streams all the games.

SARKISOV SETTLES IT IN ARMENIA'S FAVOUR

UEFA.com

Sept 7 2012

Published: Friday 7 September 2012, 22.55CET

Artur Sarkisov came off the bench to score the only goal of the game

and secure an opening Group B win for Armenia in Ta' Qali.

by Domenic Aquilina from Ta' Qali National Stadium

Substitute Artur Sarkisov scored six minutes after coming off the

bench to secure Armenia the three points from their Group B encounter

away to Malta.

The game looked to be on course for a stalemate after a cautious

opening period, with few chances at either end. However, Armenia came

out with more intent after the interval, and coach Vardan Minasyan

was left delighted after throwing Sarkisov into the fray to score

the winner 20 minutes from time.

Neither side was able to gain the upper hand in a tentative first

45 minutes, with chances at a premium inside the Ta' Qali National

Stadium. However, a change of ends brought renewed life to the visiting

side, and FC Kuban Krasnodar's Aras Ozbiliz tested Andrew Hogg in the

home goal. Malta captain Michael Mifsud responded immediately with

a fine solo effort, which Gevorg Kasparov did excellently to parry.

In the end the game was decided by a substitute - after replacing

Marcos Pizzelli, Sarkisov connected perfectly with a cross from Yura

Movsisyan, the game's outstanding player, to score the only goal. The

result could have been more emphatic but for the excellence of Hogg,

who denied Ozbiliz and Henrik Mkhitaryan late on. However, the points

ultimately went to Armenia, providing a confidence boost ahead of

their trip to Bulgaria on Tuesday, when Malta are in Italy.
