Armenia have all to play for

 

One of Europe's rapidly improving sides will provide a stiff test. By Paul Rowan

THE Armenia manager, Vardan Minasyan, earns in the region of

(EURO)50,000 per year for two jobs - he also manages the Armenian club

side Pyunik - and such is his lack of airs and graces that he was

happy to let the midnight hour pass in Yerevan one night last week

talking about the unexpected emergence of his small nation as a force.

 

A useful starting point is the under-21 game in Tallaght in March 2010

between the Republic of Ireland and Armenia when Don Givens' side lost

2-1 after being hammered 4-1 in Yerevan a few months' earlier. Those

results jolted Irish football and the FAI, but also convinced Minasyan

that the youngsters were worth the gamble of drafting into the senior

team. About five of them should play in Dublin again on Tuesday.

 

"I'm surprised about how well we have done because I've been trying to

build a new team by changing the generations and that was the main

thing," Minasyan says . "I wanted to improve the performance level,

but I wasn't expecting such good results."

 

The groundwork was laid by the former Sunderland player Ian

Porterfield, who died of cancer in 2007 and Minasyan, a member of the

backroom staff at the time, has proved himself an able operator since

taking the helm. He didn't panic when Armenia were beaten 1-0 by

Ireland in the opening game of the group in Yerevan last September,

conceding an opportunist goal in the 75th minute by substitute Keith

Fahey after dominating for long periods.

 

"We were a little bit unlucky, but we were much younger and lacking

that little bit of experience and some of the players felt the

pressure because it was their first senior competitive game," Minasyan

says. "But they have grown in belief and they trust each other."

 

The defeat of Slovakia at home a year ago gave them the belief that

they could beat anybody in the group but few others took notice until

the return fixture against Vladimir Weiss's team last month when they

travelled to Zilina and won 4-0, producing the most dynamic

performance in Group B so far.

 

"In the first half we were lucky because Slovakia had two or three

good chances but in the second half we played much better and we

matched them physically, which was very pleasing."

 

Minasyan admits that this is an area where Armenia might struggle

against Ireland on Tuesday, but unless Ireland give Armenia the

respect they deserve they are in for a rude awakening. Armenia play

more on the counterattack when away from home but the days where they

would pack players around the 18-yard box and invite teams to stick

four or five past them are over. Like Russia in Dublin a year ago,

Armenia will have five players in midfield - they favour a 4-2-3-1

formation - and Minasyan, 37, is happy to reference the best side in

the world as an influence.

 

"We base our style on Arsenal and Barcelona and the way I want us to

play. I want us to be positive. We are not so strong physically, but

good technically. We cannot play like the Scandinavians, or the

British."

 

In a country whose development has been hampered by a series of

disasters both natural and man-made, formal training has finally been

organised with the establishment of well-run academies at the two big

clubs in Yerevan, Minasyan's Pyunik and Bananz Yerevan. Still the

domestic league - consisting of eight clubs, most of them in and

around Yerevan - is not strong enough to support the national team.

 

"We sold four players from Pyunik in the summer who all play for

national team. We want to make our national team stronger so we need

these players to play abroad.

 

They have moved to Ukraine where the league is much stronger."

 

There are other common factors with Ireland which Minasyan points out.

"You fought against the British and if you see our history we are also

a small country who have fought a lot against our neighbours. Ireland

always fight and they are good under pressure and we need that

fighting spirit."

 

There the similarities end and Tuesday offers a fascinating clash of

styles and plenty of scary moments for Ireland fans.

tomorrow evening, Giovanni Trapattoni and his team will be well aware

of their capabilities.

 

Should the visitors lose, Ireland will be the only team in Group B

not to have dropped points to their Eurasian counterparts. Have we

caught your attention yet?

 

Previous encounter:

 

Only a stunning goal from Keith Fahey separated the sides when the

two teams met in Yerevan over 12 months ago and that result has become

increasingly impressive as the Armenians' campaign has continued.

 

Ireland were tested at the back that day - Richard Dunne and Sean St

Ledger doing well against relatively unknown threats - and the same

players that coach Vardan Minasyan has spent time blooding over the

last couple of months have improved several times over since. Armenia

are capable of putting a massive dent in Irish hopes, if given the

opportunity.

 

Danger men:

 

Armenia would not have had a goalscorer of note within their squad

before the current campaign. Twenty one goals later they are the

top-scoring team in the group (eight more than Ireland, ten more than

Russia), and have only conceded one extra goal when you compare their

tally to our defensive record at the other end.

 

Most of their players play in the domestic league - many under

Minasyan's guidance at Pyunik Yerevan - but they also have guys

based in Poland, Ukraine and Russia. Their are lead by their captain

Sargis Hovsepyan, who has 120 + caps, and is a defender with plenty

of experience.

 

Gevorg Ghazaryan and Yura Movsisyan are two more to keep an eye

out for. The former plays with Metalurh Donetsk and now has six

international goals to his name at the age of 22, with team-mate

Movsisyan (24) also making a fine contribution while plying his trade

with Russia side Krasnodar.

 

The biggest danger is likely to come from playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan

though, who has been a key factor behind their success. The Shakhtar

Donetsk man troubled Shay Given in Yerevan and is his team's joint

top scorer at the moment, along with Ghazaryan.

 

Coach:

 

A former midfield international for his country, Armenian Vardan

Minasyan looks after the national side as well as club side Pyunik

Yerevan. As a player he spent the bulk of his time with the same team

but also had brief spells overseas with Lausanne Sports and Lokomotiv

St. Peterburg.

 

His move into management started at Pyunik and he went on to become

assistant coach to Ian Porterfield - the man who took over Aberdeen

after Alex Ferguson joined Manchester United in 1986, was the first

man to be sacked by a Premier League club (Chelsea) in 1993 and who

was then in charge of the Armenian national team for a time.

 

Minasyan took over the reins briefly after Porterfield's resignation in

2007 (he was suffering with cancer) and though the national football

association flirted with other coaches including Dane Jan Poulsen,

they re-engaged the 37-year-old's services in February 2010 and

haven't looked back since.

 

What it all means:

 

Armenia's pacey counter-attacks caused Ireland plenty of concern in

the first game. They come to Dublin knowing that they have already

exceeded expectations and have nothing to lose. A draw will do Ireland,

but nothing is secured yet and it's worth remembering that Armenia's

only other defeat in the group was in Moscow.

 

These guys may have been minnows once, but no longer. Unfortunately,

we could well see that reflected in the tactics Trapattoni and Marco

Tardelli decide to employ to ensure another play-off spot for the

Boys in Green.

The Telegraph: Spanish referee failed to spot a handball by Irish football player, yet dismissed Armenia team's goalkeeper

 

 

Ireland, which secured a 2012 European football championship play-off place at the expense of 10 football players of Armenia, now, too, knows how it feels to profit from refereeing shortcomings, says the well-known British newspaper The Telegraph, referring to yesterday's football match between Armenia and Ireland in Dublin.

 

The defining moment of Ireland's victory was the dismissal of Armenia team's goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky on the 26th minute of the match. Spanish referee Eduardo Gonzalez dismissed Berezovsky after the ball touched his bicep when he blocked Simon Cox about two meters outside the penalty area, yet, as The Telegraph says, Gonzalez failed to spot Cox controlling the ball in the first instance with his right arm.

“It just came over my shoulder and I tried to control it. Some you get, some you don’t, but I don’t think it was a handball by the keeper,” The Telegraph cites Simon Cox, noting that had Cox been punished for offence, Armenia would have been awarded a free-kick, but against 10 men, Ireland secured a play-off place.

 

“Whether the Football Association of Ireland will offer the Armenians a replay of this fixture — an Irish appeal ignored by the French Football Federation following Henry’s handball in the World Cup play-off in Paris two years ago — remains to be seen,” says the British newspaper, adding that even playing against 10 men, the Irish struggled to suggest they'll be able to end the 10-year wait for participation at a major tournament - they had to rely on good fortune.

The main thing is that Armenia's team has shown the world of their young talent and hunger for success. A big part of this success goes to the young coach Minasyan, who's style is very much in line with Barcelona.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND GIVEN A HELPING HAND TO EURO 2012 PLAY-OFFS WITH THIERRY HENRY FORGOTTEN IF NOT FORGIVEN

The Republic of Ireland cried foul when Thierry Henry and a dubious

handball decision robbed them of a place at the 2010 World Cup. An

equally suspect refereeing decision gives them a helping hand to

the Euro 2012 play offs and it's put down to karma and the luck of

the Irish.

 

No word yet from Tigran Sargsyan, then. Armen Gevorgyan, too, has

been oddly quiet. The Armenian Prime Minister and his deputy have so

far kept their counsel.

 

But it can only be a matter of time before one or both of them publicly

raises with Uefa the need for technology in football to guard against

errors from officials. Or lobbies European football's governing body

and the Irish FA for a replay of last night's euro 2012 qualifier at

the Aviva Stadium.

 

If they don't get around to it then they're missing a trick. Irish

football values fair play and so would undoubtedly acquiesce.

 

We know this as fact because back in November 2009 Sargsyan's

counterpart in the Republic, Brian Cowen, led the chorus of politicians

unequivocally condemning Thierry Henry's gamesmanship and sleight

of hand.

 

The Frenchman, for those with short memories, blatantly controlled

the ball, not once but twice, in setting up an extra time winner in

a play-off in Paris that booked the French a place at last year's

World Cup at Ireland's expense.

have enjoyed the public implosion of Raymond Domenech's team at that

tournament. Though believers in the theory of what goes around comes

around had their own satisfaction yesterday evening. As long as they

were Irish, and not Armenian, of course.

 

With the game goalless, Simon Cox controlled a flighted through

ball with his arm before attempting to lob Armenia goalkeeper Roman

Berezovsky. He failed, largely because Berezovsky was right in front

of him, having run well out of his area. The goalkeeper blocked with

a combination of chest and arm pit but was wrongly judged to have

handled and was promptly sent off, the look of bemusement on his face

the definition for the tragicomic.

 

Armenia needed victory to pip Ireland to a play-off spot but the

game, with Ireland already on top before the sending off, became

one-sided after and the Irish ran out narrow 2-1 winners. They go in

to tomorrow's draw, seeded, while Armenia are left to rue the luck

of the Irish.

 

"It just came over my shoulder and I tried to control it," Cox said,

doing nothing to dispel the notion of the illegal use of an arm. Cox

admitted the Armenia goalkeeper was blameless before observing:

"Some you get, some you don't."

 

What a difference two years make.

 

"If that result remains, it reinforces the view that if you cheat,

you will win," railed Ireland's incensed justice minister, Dermot

Ahern, of the Paris fixture. "We should put the powers that be in

the cosy world of Fifa on the spot and demand a replay."

 

Mary Coughlan, then deputy prime minister, also joined calls in the

Irish parliament for world football's governing body to "vigorously

pursue the use of video referees"

 

In the BBC studios last night Gary Lineker and Alex McLeish shared a

joke or two about the whole thing. "The Irish probably deserved that,

didn't they Alex?" asked Lineker, the answer implicit in the tone.

 

"Yeah," chuckled McLeish, who will no doubt laugh off Shay Given being

given his marching orders for a similarly blameless act this weekend.

 

Henry's offence was of course more blatant, more premeditated and more

decisive in terms of the result. The Irish were the beneficiaries of

a poor refereeing decision, rather than their own mischief. They did

not cheat. Though Armenia were cheated.

 

The comparison is not a direct one. But it remains a lesson

in football's ability to make easy fools of bandwagon jumping

malcontents. It is a lesson most fans, blinded by their partisan

affiliations, will forever be resistant to learning.

 

Treating the duel imposers of refereeing injustices for and against

may be the mark of a well rounded man. Football fans' permanent state

of arrested development, however, will forever mitigate against this

fanciful and bastardised notion of Kipling.

Dear Mr. President,

 

During Euro-2012 Ireland-Armenia football game, on the 26th minute

referee Gonzales gave a red card to Armenian goalkeeper Roman

Berezovsky thinking that the latter had broken the rules and touched

the ball with hands.

 

The rules of the game were broken by Irish attacker Simon Cox,

when he stopped the ball with hands. He later admitted during his

interview with BBC that he really did brake the rules, while the

Armenian goalkeeper didn~Rt even touch the ball.

 

The fact that Cox had played with hands and Berezovsky didn~Rt touch

the ball, we became confident after re-watching the recording of

the game.

 

Armenia was battling for Euro-2012 for the first time and because of

the referee lost that opportunity.

 

As a world famous football player and a social figure we expect your

interference. UEFA must punish referee Gonzales and deprive him the

opportunity to continue his practice.

Chairman of the Armenian Community of Slovakia Ashot Grigoryan reports

that a number of responsible figures of the Slovakian football came to

his office on Monday and told him they possessed important information

on the refereeing of the then-upcoming Armenia-Ireland match.

 

According to them, the Spanish referee Iturralde Gonzales had been

instructed to make the Irish team win. The reason, according to

them, is the injustice happened during a World Cup 2010 Qualifiers

France-Ireland match, when Thierry Henry from national football squad

of France, scored a goal with his hand which the referee counted as

a goal. Grigoryan tried but failed to inform the Football Federation

of Armenia of the possible fraud.

 

The proof of this statement can be yesterday's match and the "mistakes"

of the referee. The Football Federation of Armenia needs to seriously

deal with this question.

Բայց նույնը կասեն շատ ու շատ ուրիշներ։ Ֆրանսիա – Իռլանդիա խաղի մասին արդեն խոսել ենք։ Էլ չասած Ջիովանի Տրապատոնիի մասին։ Հենց նա է եղել Իտալիայի ընտրանու գլխավոր մարզիչը 2002-ին, երբ թմրադեղեր վաճառող Բայրոն Մորենոն թաղում էր Սկուադրա Աձձուրան։ Բոլորս էլ հասկանում ենք, որ բողոքարկելն անիմաստ է։

 

Այսպես ֆուտբոլում լինում է։ Բայց այն, ինչ եղավ Ռոմանի հետ, այ դա ողբերգություն է։ Նրա հեռանալը հավաքականից հաստատ էսպես չպետք է լիներ։ Պարտությունից, Եվրո-2012-ից հրաժարվելուց, բոլոր մնացածից սարսափելին Ռոմանի աչքերն էին ու անընդհատ կրկնվող. «No! No!»։

 

2001-ին Ռոմանին նեղացրին ու նա չէր խաղում հավաքականում։ Պաստառ էի պատրաստել. «Վերադարձրե՛ք Ռոմանին» ու տարել Հանրապետական մարզադաշտ։ Բացեցի, հետո արագ փակեցի, որովհետև դեռ երիտասարդ էի ու մի քիչ քաշվում էի։ Մինչև հիմա չեմ կարողանում ներել ինձ դա։

 

Այսօր հաստատ պաստառը չեմ փակի։ Ռոմա՛ն, դու չես կարող հիմա հեռանալ հավաքականից։ Ամեն ինչ հասկանում եմ. տարիքն էլ, հանգստանալու ցանկությունն էլ։ Բնական է, որ կունենանք նոր, լավ դարպասապահներ, բայց դու մի ամբողջ ժամանակաշրջանի բնորոշում ես։ Քեզ չի կարելի այսպես հեռանալ։ Ոչ նման խաղով։ Անպայման պետք է շտկել իրավիճակը։

 

Անցած տարի կարիերան շարունակել քեզ խնդրեց ՀՖՖ նախագահ Ռուբեն Հայրապետյանը։ Այս անգամ, եթե պետք եղավ, ազգովի պետք է խնդրենք։

 

Այնպես որ սոցցանցերում ավելի լավ է Ռոման Բերեզովսկուն՝ Հայաստանի հավաքականից հեռանալը արգելող խմբեր ստեղծվեն։ Հաստատ ավելի կարևոր է։

ARMENIA COACH: SENDING OFF BEREZOVSKY CAUSED DEFEAT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia coach Vardan Minasyan has said that the

unjust sending off keeper Roman Berezovsky was the reason for his

team's defeat in the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier against Ireland on

October 11.

 

"Before Berezovsky was sent off, the team played as we planned and were

in possession. But the red card changed everything," lifesports.ru

quoted Minasyan as saying. "I don't think there will be a rematch

but the referee's decision drew a wide response, what is important."

 

The UEFA said it's ready to consider the letter of the Football

Federation of Armenia urging an investigation into the referee's

mistakes and possible rematch.
