It just kept getting worse and worse. I had to stop watching but I didn't actually think a third goal would be scored in the time remaining. Terrible!

Nothing about the Armenian team will change, though, as long as Ruben Hayrapetyan remains chairman/dictator of the Football Federation of Armenia and treats the team like his own little fief.

FIFA 2014 World Cup Qualifying: Can a resurrected Armenia stage a comeback?

- June 14, 2013

By Appo Jabarian

Denmark's hopes of reaching the 2014 World Cup finals were dealt a

huge blow thanks to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Armenia in a

qualifier on June 11.

Rebounding from four consecutive defeats in as many games, Armenia

made an impressive come-back with a brilliant performance against the

Danes in Copenhagen stunning the home team - a favorite.

The victory made Armenia leapfrog Denmark in the standings; and become

a viable contender for qualification to FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

Denmark lies fifth in the six-team Group B with 6 points trailing

Armenia on goal differential. Group leader Italy has 14 points,

Bulgaria 10, Czech Republic 9.

Spartak Moscow striker Yura Movsisyan fired the Armenian visitors

ahead in the first 30 seconds, shocking the Danish home crowd that

watched in complete disbelief as Aras Ozbiliz doubled it for Armenia

in the 19th minute. Movsisyan scored the 3rd goal in the 59th minute

while Ukraine 2012 Champions Shakhtar Donetsk's star Henrikh

Mkhitaryan scored Armenia's fourth in the 81st minute.

Head Coach Vardan Minasyan's side had scored just twice in their

previous five qualifying matches, but went goal crazy in Copenhagen to

earn three invaluable points.

Hundreds of Danes gave Armenia a standing ovation as the visitors

completed their incredible routing of the home team.

As promised, Minasyan succeeded in rewinding the team spirit and put

Armenia back into a winning mode. A few changes in the starter lineup

transformed Armenia beyond recognition and helped bringing back

memories of similar spirited drive in the previous Euro-2012

qualifying campaign.

As a result of the victory Armenia took her place among European

nations that were considered `alive' by UEFA, for qualifying.

Tuesday's away win against Denmark enabled Armenia to receive a

special mention on the FIFA `Week in Numbers' list of records.

Fifa.com wrote: `4 unanswered Armenia goals handed Denmark their

heaviest defeat in 26 years last night. The stunning home reverse was

the Danes' worst since being beaten 5-1 by Spain in the Round of 16 at

Mexico 1986, although Coach Morten Olsen - who played in that loss

against La Roja - had no hesitation in describing Armenia's unlikely

triumph as `the worst night of my football life'. For the visitors, it

was a record-equaling victory, and one made all the more remarkable as

it came just four days after they went down 1-0 against Malta. The

Armenians' hero was Yura Movsisyan.'

A country of three million, Armenia joined FIFA in 1994 after becoming

independent from now defunct Soviet Union and played her first

competitive match the same year. Armenia's lowest ranking was 159

among 170 nations in 1994. Her best mover was in June 2007 jumping 48

places to 80th following a stunning win against then favorite Poland

ranking 18. She ultimately climbed to 41st place in 2012.

In 2012 EURO qualifying phase Armenia secured 14 points out of 10

games, scored 17 goals and allowed 7, averaging 1.75 points and 2.13

for and 0.7 against goals per match.

In 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying phase, the results were dismal

compared to 2014 WC. Armenia earned a mere 4 points out of 10 games,

scored 6 and allowed 22 goals, averaging 0.4 points, and 0.6 for and

2.2 against goals per match. In all previous FIFA WC qualifiers from

1998 through 2010,

Armenia's best performance came in FIFA 1998 WC qualifying phase when

she averaged 0.8 points per match.

To date, in her 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign Armenia

secured 6 points in as many games and scored 6 goals averaging 1 point

and 1 goal per game. So far Armenia's performance far exceeds all her

previous campaigns.

Victory against Denmark leaves the group's second place slot up for

grabs among five national squads giving the 2nd place winner a berth

at the play-offs. There are still four more games offering Armenia an

opportunity to make history.

While some pundits may say it's `impossible' for Armenia to reach 2014

FFIA World Cup, statistically she still has a fighting chance.

Armenia is expected to get major boost in FIFA World Ranking. The June

11 win against Denmark, a major world soccer powerhouse ranking 20th

among 209 nations, will propel Armenia from current 89th place to a

spot in the 60's.

Had the Armenian national team won at home in Yerevan against underdog

Malta it would have earned 3 additional points sharing the 3rd place

in the group with rival Czech Republic. But that's water under the

bridge.

However, not all is lost. In order to hit the road to 2014 World Cup

in Brazil, Armenia must win all remaining matches - against the Czechs

on September 6 in Prague; Denmark on September 10 in Yerevan; Bulgaria

onOctober 11 in Armenia; and last qualifier against Italy four days

later.

Isn't it a seemingly impossible task? In the world of sports - and

especially soccer, there is nothing impossible.

Armenia almost wrote a Cinderella story in the soccer world during

EURO 2012 qualifying phase when she succumbed (1-3) during playoffs

against Republic of Ireland in October 2011.

Can she become the Cinderella of FIFA World Cup 2014?

Looking ahead to Brazil, while Armenia flunked in four consecutive

previous matches it mustered enough stamina and style to bring the

national team back on course. In addition to Italy, all remaining five

teams are contenders - some with high, others with low probability. As

a powerhouse, Italy is vying to consolidate its 1stplace finish. An

underwhelming Bulgaria has a three-point advantage over

underperforming Czech side and a four-point advantage over both

Armenia and Denmark.

For now, as experienced and prudent coaches preach, Armenia's main

task is winning the next match - against Czech Republic.

Another Destiny Ruined

Problems with Henrikh Mkhitaryan's transfer to Liverpool caused

another wave of disappointment. Some citizens are likely to protest

against the president of the Armenian Football Federation Ruben

Hairapetyan nicknamed Nemets who is blocking Henrikh's career.

Henrikh's transfer from Shakhtar to Liverpool is hindered by the

`owners' of his transfer Nemets Rubo and his friend Oleg Mkrtichyan.

The owner of Shakhtar Rinat Ahmetov, one of the richest people in

Ukraine, also has interests.

As a result, Henrikh Mkhitaryan who has a chance to be one of the best

footballers of Europe may lose interest in football and spend the rest

of his career in the marsh of the Ukrainian football.

Henrikh is another victim of the marsh of the oligarchy to which

development and progress are unknown. Thousands of talented young men

with dreams drowned in this marsh. Having usurped all the spheres of

life, the oligarchy imposes its anti-hygienic and criminal nature on

the country and public. The marsh is a perfect nest for the oligarchy

which reproduces itself by killing the others.

It has enslaved the political parties, destroyed culture, sports,

science, history which distinguish the country and instead created a

pseudo-science, pseudo-sport, pseudo-culture. These people now

represent Armenia and the citizens of Armenia.

As a result, the talented and vibrant young people who are supposed to

replenish the country with their talents, hopes and chances for the

future and content either leave the country or stay and drown in the

marsh.

The country goes to several dozens of families which need the marsh to

prosper there. It is already stinking because there is no fresh blood,

ideas and dreams.

Will Nemets Rubo get away with Henrikh's story, like he got away with

Vahe Avetyan killed in his restaurant last year?

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN IS TODAY'S ARMENIA

Amid other offshore and corruption scandals we are witnessing another

scandal. Let no one say that this is a sport issue. The story of

Henrikh Mkhitaryan reflects the real situation in Armenia and its

citizens. The society and the state are strangled and killed. There

is no need to list those people because everyone knows their names

and nicknames. Those people are the reason that Armenia cannot be

successful at least in one or two aspects. They do not allow that

because they understand that as soon as someone is saved from the

marsh they have created, the marsh will become their grave. So,

people have two choices. Either they remain here and become slaves,

or they are eliminated, or they escape from Armenia.

The important thing in the scandal involving the young and talented

football player is not the price of transfer. It was just an

opportunity to ruin the deal.

What does it mean to have a talented young man playing in a leading

European football club? It will mean that the Armenian football will

become known worldwide thanks to the talented young man, not thanks

to the Armenian officials. The Armenian talented football player,

communicating with world players and football specialists, would

bring new approaches to the Armenian football and one day he could

oust the "fathers" of the Armenian football. Let alone Mkhitaryan

would become the one who would open the door to Europe for other

talented football players.

Playing in such a club would also bring him financial benefits, and

one more family would stop being dependent on the regime. Later when

he would have completed his career as a football player, he would

set up his own football school, football esthetics and relations in

Armenia. As a result today's pyramid would have to go to the dump.

Instead, his career future is ruined defaming the football player

with cheap gossip.

Having nothing in common with politics, Henrikh Mkhitaryan appeared

at the center of political and civilization discussions.

It is not his fault, neither is it the fault of those who discuss it.

This is today's Armenia where football players, singers, businessmen

and painters and even gravediggers and housecleaners must receive

"quotas" only and exceptionally from the ruling political leadership.

PRAGUE (Reuters) – Armenia scored in injury time to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their World Cup Group B qualifier on Friday, severely denting the home side’s chances of making the finals.

The Czechs looked like they had salvaged a draw when Tomas Rosicky’s long-range shot deflected into the net off a defender to level at 1-1 in the 70th minute.

But Gevorg Ghazaryan latched onto a pass deep in Czech territory in injury time and found the net with a shot that bounced off keeper Petr Cech and past a sprawling Michal Kadlec who was unable to clear his lines.

“We had a good start and a bad end,” Czech coach Michal Bilek told reporters.

The Czechs dominated possession but paid the price for squandering a clutch of quality chances in a match that highlighted the home side’s inability to finish.

Armenia took an early lead when a defensive error gifted the visitors possession in front of goal and Karlen Mkrtchyan’s fierce drive into the top corner gave a diving Cech no chance.

The home side started the game brightly with midfielder Petr Jiracek firing over the bar with only the keeper to beat.

Armenia keeper Roman Berezovski, who was forced off through injury in the second half, also had to punch away a Tomas Sivok header later in the first half.

Italy, who play Bulgaria later on Friday, top the group on 14 points after six games, with their opponents second on 10.

Armenia have moved level with the Czechs in third on nine points after seven games.

Gevorg Ghazaryan struck in injury time to harm the Czech Republic's 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualification chances and improve Armenia's in the process. The Shakhter Karagandy striker's goal, which arrived in the 92nd minute, gave the minnows an unexpected 2-1 win on the road and allowed them to move level on points with their hosts.

The Czechs started the night third in Group B, a point behind Bulgaria, and with the second-placed side facing leaders Italy, the chance to steal a march was there. They started well and dominated early on, but fell behind to Karlen Mkrtchyan's stunner. They would level through Tomas Rosicky, but Ghazaryan had the last word to secure a famous Armenian win which moves them on to nine points also.

Their success went against all the pre-match predictions and as if to make it all the sweeter, they had been forced to ride an early wave of pressure. Just seventy-four seconds had passed when Petr Jiracek had the first shot of the game, working Roman Berezovsky, before David Limbersky hit wide. Jiracek then rattled in another shot which went away from goal and both Josef Husbauer and Michal Rabusic chimed in with wayward efforts which at least kept the pressure on.

The weight of traffic heading Armenia's way was overpowering, but the home side could not cash it in with Rabusic hitting wide after Berezovsky could only parry Plasil's shot.

Armenia were fortunate to be level but, somehow, they took the lead with 31 minutes gone, punishing the Czechs for their generous finishing. Anzhi Makhachkala striker Mkrtchyan was the man on the spot, cracking in a brilliant 30-yarder to put his side in front with a Petr Cech helpless.

Few could believe what had happened and Armenia looked to make the most of their moment, with Levon Hayrapetyan having a follow-up effort charged down.

The Czechs were clearly stunned and Rabusic's header over was the closest they went to a response before the break, as Armenia impressed, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan seeing a shot charged down.

Rabusic went close with another effort after the interval but was lacking in support and the chances became more evenly spread, with Ghazaryan hitting wide at the other end.

The Czechs would get the goal their early if not later play deserved, however, with old-stager Rosicky pulling them level from the edge of the area with 20 minutes left.

Arsenal man Rosicky and then Husbauer tried to complete a total turnaround, but it was not to be and Ghazaryan had the last say from 12 yards.

Armenia shocks Czech Republic to further muddy Group B

Kyle Bonn

Sep 6, 2013, 3:21 PM EDT

http://nbcprosoccertalk.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/350x15.jpg?w=320Reuters

With four matches remaining coming into today’s play, Europe’s World Cup qualifying Group B was already a mess. Now, it’s even more so.

25-year-old striker Gevorg Ghazaryan (pictured, right) scored a crazy rebound header in extra time as Armenia stunned the Czech Republic 2-1. The three points means the top four teams in the group all sit within five points of one another – pending results later in the day of course.

Italy are still relatively comfortably in first place with 14 points, but behind them it gets clogged. Bulgaria sit on 10 points in second place, and Armenia’s win puts them level with the Czech Republic for third with nine points each. Even Denmark still has a prayer – albeit with lots of help needed – back in fifth place with six points.

Looking at the standings, the Czech Republic had a fantastic chance to firmly grab second place if they could have won, with Bulgaria playing at Italy later tonight in a match with now massive implications.

Denmark also play bottomfeeders Malta, and a win could draw them level with the Czech Republic and Armenia.

It will be an interesting home stretch for the group. Both the Armenians and Czechs have matches with Italy and Bulgaria remaining on the docket, while the Danes creeping up from behind get to play Malta twice, including the one later today.

As for Ghazaryan, the goal is his first of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, and his first goal for Armenia since June of 2012 when he bagged a brace in a friendly with Kazakhstan. The striker plays his professional ball in the Kazakhstan Premier League with Shakhter Karagandy, having just moved to there in July from Ukranian side Metalurg Donetsk.

Here’s video of his goal. It appears in real time to be a poor bit of goalkeeping by Czech keeper Petr Cech. However, upon watching the replay, the Chelsea netminder saves the first shot on a tough angle, but a brilliant bit of reaction time allows Ghazaryan to head in the rebound.

Armenian midfielder Karlen Mkrtchyan (right) scored the opening goal

PRAGUE—Armenia’s national soccer team won their World Cup qualifying game Friday against the Czech Republic with a dramatic 90th minute goal from Gevorg Ghazaryan, making the score 2-1 for Armenia.

Armenian midfielder Karlen Mkrtchyan opened the scoring at the 31st minute with a powerful, swerving shot from well outside the box that went past goalkeeper Petr Cech’s reaching dive.

The Czech side equalized at the 70th minute with a goal that was a long way coming after a period of putting Armenia under pressure.

However, Armenia would have the last word as Ghazaryan clenched the three points for Armenia.

Armenia are now in 4th place in their World Cup qualifying group, sitting under Italy, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic, who have the same number of points as Armenia, but an advantage in goal difference.

Armenia’s next game is against Denmark on Tuesday, September 10, in Yerevan
