Asbarez Even if I will not retract what I said about “Lantos the Mimos” above. Look at the reason and the reasoning he gave for his vote. The flip-flop artist that he may be , does that mean that the next time the US, intent to take out the ANPP , the Soviet inspired and Russian engineered (Armenian Nuclear Power Plant) at Metsamor, and Turkey opens its air space for the adventure then will Tom the Mimos/Lantos once again flip-flop and reverse his vote? Let us be practical and pragmatic. Yes, Lantos, the flip-flopper may prescribe to the Jewish faith, consider that our newfound sweetheart/hero Adam Schiff also prescribes to the same faith. What is the reason for his inclination? Is it because his electoral district(Glendale) is heavily Armenian? Would he stick to his guns if his district were heavily Turkish/Azeri? I doubt it. Some people, regardless of their denominational persuasion, unlike that Lantos the Mimos, who still does nor know where his ass is, some may still have the decency to speak the truth. Which brings us to what Henry Hyde said; In paraphrase. “This bill will not harm the US Turkish friendship”. In other words, “It is time that the ‘tail stop wagging the dog’”. That the donee may not pull the strings of the donor. That the recipient of welfare may not dictate the terms. Where would Turkey be without the huge infusion of American dollars? Would they be sustained by the Russian Ruble, or the Pakistani Ruplee? The Chinese Yuan? It may be time that Americans realize who the “dog” is and which the “tail”. karakash
I still maintain the bill will be killed..., just wait before being happy. style_images/master/snapback.png I wouldn't be surprised if Hastert makes promises again to bring them to a floor vote, but then pulls them at the last minute. He'll throw it on Bush just as he did with Clinton in October 2000. Both measures would get over 300 votes each. I would bet on it.
Lev7
Chasing after bones again? Apparently you missed the jewish lobby pledge to give all out support to turkey in defeating any vote in Congress. Maybe he quaked and floored you, but it did nothing for me. Besides...we need to know the details of the amendment that was attached to the resolution. It may make it totally worthless. style_images/master/snapback.png I think it says about the amendment in the anca press release: http://www.anca.org/press_releases/press_r...es.php?prid=

Con. Res. 195 was the one that had an amendment. I didn't see anything about an amendment to the more popular measure - H. Res. 316. H. Con. Res. 195 was 35 to 11. Schiff. H. Res. 316 was 40 to 7. Schiff, Radanovich, Knollenberg, Pallone. Interesting to note that the Armenian Assembly practically avoids any mention of H. Con. Res. 195 on their website. The ANCA pushed for both and discusses both in its press release.
Lev7
so when is the house floor vote? Some turkish website claims it is next thursday Zaman Online, Turkey By Foreign News Desk Published: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 zaman.com Two drafts aiming at recognition of the so-called Armenian genocide will be on the agenda of the US House of Representatives on Thursday. Turks in America launched a message campaign over the draft expected to be presented to the voting of the members after discussion in the International Relations Committee. Former National Security Adviser Ret. Gen. Brent Scowcroft called the House Chair, Dennis Hastert, to "bring the drafts to the agenda." Scowcroft, also the chairman of the American Turkish Council, wrote a letter to Hastert regarding that the drafts were against the interest of the US as well, he warned that approval of the drafts would create serious consequences. Armenian President Robert Kocharian should response to the olive branch offered by Turkish Prime Minster Recep Tayip Erdogan, said Scowcroft, as he added that historians should find answers to such issues. Such drafts encourage those who try to keep Turkey away from the West, he added. The House Chair, Hastert, has full authorization to bring the drafts expected to be passed by International Relations Committee to the general assembly. Hastert previously prevented a similar draft from coming to the agenda. However, the attitude that will be taken by the Bush administration is also important at this point. The draft in question is almost the same as the one presented five years ago. With the intervention of the US President in term back then, Bill Clinton, Hastert did not bring the draft to the general assembly at the last moment. phantom22
It will be a while before this is brought to the House floor, if Hastert allows it to. I see that the PURISTS are still dissecting the vote. Politics has no logic and little morality. I am getting to understand why the Armenians usually lose-lack of vision. MORALITY has little to do with what transpires. Every day I come into contact with both people living in exquisite palaces in America and then on the way to my office, people living homeless on the street. It is all about power, the strong and the weak. To the powerful goes the spoils.

MosJan
HOUSE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE ADOPTED TWO RESOLUTIONS ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE 16.09.2005 02:31 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ The pan-Armenian genocide resolution took a major step forward today, winning bipartisan support in the influential House International Relations Committee, the Armenian Assembly of America reported. H. Res. 316, which is currently backed by 140 Members, won passage thanks in part to Committee Chairman Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL) and the bill's principal sponsors Reps. George Radanovich (R-CA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Armenian Caucus Co-Chairs Joe Knollenberg(R-MI) and Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ). "The argument has been made that these resolutions, if adopted, will be harmful to [the] interests [of the United States] by undermining our relationship with Turkey, which all acknowledge to be one of our key allies...Denial of that fact cannot be justified on the basis of expediency or fear that speaking the truth will do us harm," said Hyde. Committee Members also voted today to approve, H. Con. Res. 195, a bill that would reaffirm the Armenian Genocide. The measure, which passed 35 to 11, was introduced by Schiff in June. H. Res. 316, which was introduced on June 14, calls upon the President to "ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding" of the "Armenian Genocide" and to "accurately characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide" in the President's annual message. Passage of this legislation would reaffirm the U.S. historical record, which includes thousands of pages documenting the premeditated extermination of the Armenian people. American intervention prevented the full realization of Ottoman Turkey's genocidal plan and U.S. humanitarian assistance was extended to those who survived. Additionally, today's vote reiterates the same message put forth by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. In 1981, for example, Reagan issues a presidential proclamation that said in part, "Like the genocide of the Armenians before it, and the genocide of the Cambodians which followed it - and like too many other persecutions of too many other people – the lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten." President Bush himself has also carefully set forth the textbook definition of the crime of genocide as it applies to Armenians in his successive April 24th statements of remembrance.H. Res. 316 is similar to the version that nearly passed the House of Representatives in 2000. The previous resolution, which had the support of 143 cosponsors, passed the House International Relations Committee by a vote of 24 to 11. It was later scheduled for a vote on the House floor, but withdrawn at the last minute due to an intervention by President Clinton to Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) which prevented the final affirmative vote. The next step in the legislative process is to work with the sponsors to secure passage in the full House. <!> Reproduction in full or in part is prohibited without reference to "PanARMENIAN.Net"
MosJan
Yerevan Lauds U.S. Lawmakers For Affirming Armenian Genocide By Ruzanna Stepanian and Atom Markarian Armenia welcomed on Friday the endorsement by a U.S congressional panel of two resolutions recognizing the Armenian genocide and expressed hope that they will be passed by the full House of Representatives. “We welcome the decision by the House International Relations Committee and consider it to be yet another step towards international recognition of the Armenian Genocide,” the spokesman for Armenia’s Foreign Ministry, Hamlet Gasparian, told RFE/RL. “We hope that the issue will be put before the full House of Representatives and that it will discuss and adopt the resolutions,” Gasparian said. The resolutions urge President George W. Bush to “accurately characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide” and call on Turkey to “acknowledge the culpability of its predecessor state, the Ottoman Empire.” Their overwhelming approval by the House panel on Thursday was also welcomed by leaders of Armenia’s main political parties represented in parliament. But they were mostly skeptical about the resolutions’ chances of reaching the House floor, suggesting that the United States will not jeopardize its strategic relations with Turkey. “It is very good that such resolutions were passed,” said Galust Sahakian, the parliamentary leader of the governing Republican Party of Armenia. “But America now wants to settle its relations with Turkey.” “What happened a few years ago will happen again,” said Artashes Geghamian of the opposition National Unity Party. “That will underscore the importance which the United States attaches to Turkey’s role in this region while being a friend of the Republic of Armenia.” Geghamian was alluding to a similar resolution that was passed by the House panel five years ago only to be blocked by Speaker Dennis Hastert at the request of then President Bill Clinton. The administration of President George W. Bush is also opposed to any U.S. declarations describing the 1915-1918 mass killings as genocide. But it is not clear if the White House will similarly try to thwart the passage of the pro-Armenian bills. There was no immediate reaction to Thursday’s congressional votes from Turkey which denies that what happened in its territory 90 years ago constituted a genocide and has condemned 16 countries that have recognized the Armenian tragedy. In a letter to House International Relations Committee members, the U.S. State Department warned that the debate "could damage U.S.-Turkish relations and could undermine progress by Ankara and Yerevan as they begin quiet talks to address the issue and look to the future." But Gasparian disagreed. “I wouldn’t like to link the resolutions adopted by third countries to Turkish-Armenian relations,” he said. “As far as I know, the parliaments that have recognized the Armenian genocide urged Turkey in one way or another to normalize its relations with Armenia.” (Photolur photo: Hamlet Gasparian.) Dave
I wouldn't be surprised if Hastert makes promises again to bring them to a floor vote, but then pulls them at the last minute. He'll throw it on Bush just as he did with Clinton in October 2000. I don't think Hastert will be a problem here. He knows about the accusations about him being paid thousands of dollars to pull the genocide bills in 2000. Maybe this time. he'll try to prove Sibel Edmonds (and her supporters) wrong by supporting the genocide motions.
