Anileve Posted August 10, 2005 Report Share Posted August 10, 2005 I didn't know where else to post this. A friend is coming to NYC for a visit this month, since her visa is expiring THIS month. And she is inquiring about work as a lecturer, translator or a music teacher. She has done several lectures on Armenian architecture, taught music and published several articles in Armenian newspapers and journals. I don't know how to go about finding her something in the Armenian community considering the short amount of time given. To me it sounds almost impossible. I've contacted 2 people already but unfortunately without success. So perhaps some of you have some input or ideas on how to go about finding that sort of paid work. Maybe something through a church which I know they have. Isn't there also some cultural center there? I seem to remember an Armenian cultural center in NY. Actually I got in touch with a few people, I don't know how it's going to turn out but it's worth a shot. In America we have money growing on trees. Armat Posted August 12, 2005 Report Share Posted August 12, 2005 If she plays piano and can teach piano then there will always be kids needing lessons. My two boys get piano lessons and Armenian and none Armenian kids as well. She can also teach the Jewish kids (why not) and speaking Russian would be a bonus. She should try the huge Russian Jewish community in NY as well as Armenian. vava Posted August 12, 2005 Report Share Posted August 12, 2005 I don't know what kind of Visa/Green Card requirements she faces... perhaps a solution like Armat's suggestion would be ideal but it would be wise to make sure that her employmeny meets any applicable rules/regulations. Anoushik Posted August 13, 2005 Report Share Posted August 13, 2005 I just saw this post Evelina, I don't understand. Her visa expires this month, meaning she is only here until the end of August? (I'm sorry if I completely misunderstood, but I have no clue about such things.) If she has published articles then maybe she can contact the numerous Armenian art magazines and see if they are interested in working with her. Sure, she can always teach, but I doubt she'd find students so soon, especially students who are willing to pay well. My mom and I have deliberately stayed away from the Armenian music schools in LA because they pay horribly. And Armenian private students are virtually non-existent, as the parents are very cheap and want to pay as little as possible.
