article's photo

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau has commented on the elimination of the Nakhijevan Old Juga Armenian Cemetery khachkars on December 2005 by the Azeri army. According to the members of the party, the barbarism had nothing to do with the religion but aimed at distorting the Armenian traits of Nakhijevan. {BR}

“The act was in itself an anti-Armenian step like those which Azerbaijan carried out during the 88 years of its existence against the Armenians of Armenia and Artsakh and the Armenian monuments in general”.

In order to complain against the Azeri criminal policy and to demand respective attitude from the whole world, the Bureau of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation has decided to announce February 28, the anniversary of the massacres of the Armenians of Sumgayit by the Azeris, “Day of Complain against the Criminal Policy of Azerbaijan”.

That day in different cities of the world acts of complain and other events will be organized opposite the Azeri diplomatic representations and corresponding international organizations, as well as in other convenient places

Armenian Delegation to PACE Raised Issue of Armenian Monument Destruction in Nakhichevan

27.01.2006 20:06 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ January 26 in Strasbourg member of the Armenian delegation to PACE, National Unity faction leader Artashes Geghamian raised the issue of the destruction of the Armenian monuments in Nakhichevan. In his speech Artashes Geghamian stressed that the elimination of the Armenian cemetery in Old Juga by Azeri soldiers incited by the authorities is nothing but barbarism. Thus, in his words, European principle are being infringed since Azerbaijan fails to honor the commitments undertaken 5 years ago at the entry to the Council of Europe. Besides, he noted, if Turkey wishes to join the European Union it should demonstrate will and condemn the barbarian deeds, since on March 16, 1921 Turkey and Russia obliged to guarantee the maintenance of historical and cultural monuments in Nakhichevan, reported RFE/RL.

Look at how the Muslims reacted to the cartoons depicting Muhammed, and compare that to the Armenian answer to the destruction of the Jugha cemetary.

I didn't see such an outrage among Armenians or Christians in general, about khachkars that really have a cultural/historical value. I didn't see anything about the destruction of khachkars in BBC, CNN, or any of those 3 letter news channels.

1000s filled the streets of Jakarta, Tehran, and Damascus after news came about the caricatures. Europe won't be threatened by this, at least, not as much as the Christians of the Middle-East.

Armenians should, to a certain degree, inspire themselves from these Muslims, and answer harshly if similar events take place in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, or elsewhere...

Armenian Monuments Demolition Issue Raised in CE Again

07.02.2006 00:46 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe discussed the letter of inquiry submitted by former member of the Armenian delegation to PACE Shavarsh Kocharian on the demolition of the Armenian cemetery in Old Julfa, reported RA MFA press office. Armenia’s permanent representative in CE, Ambassador Christian Ter-Stepanian addressed the sitting. The Ambassador underscored that the fact of demolition is intolerable, it infringes human values and conflicts with one of the CE major goals. The Ambassador stressed that the letter of inquiry and the photos attached to it prove the fact of destruction of the Armenian khachkars by Azeri soldiers and said Azerbaijan is responsible for this deed. He also noted that these barbarian acts are numerous and have a long history. At the same time the Ambassador expressed regret that PACE, which had to assess the condition of the cultural heritage, did not receive permission to visit Nakhichevan. If the visit were held in time such events could have been avoided, he said. Christian Ter-Stepanian informed that international organizations provided feedback on the matter. Thus, January 19 the European Parliament passed a resolution calling upon the Azerbaijani authorities to stop demolition of khachkars.

The permanent representative in CE noted that while the international community marks the 50th anniversary of the European Convention on Culture, a state that has signed this Convention violates it. Despite the fact that destruction of the Armenian monuments is still continued in Nakhichevan no single international commission has visited the site yet. The Ambassador called upon the Committee of Ministers to urge the Azerbaijani authorities to put an end to these acts and allow an international commission to visit the places of common human values.

ANNALS ARE YET TO CRY OUT

Khachkars of Jugha Through the Eyes of a Witness

Despite the recent barbaric annihilation of Old Jugha’s unique historic monuments, the rich annals still exist and will definitely continue crying out. Renowned seismologist Sergey Nazaretian was fortunate to visit Old Jugha in 1987 with an Armenian group of 5 and shoot a number of precious photos. He presented the copies of the photos at "Asparez" press club in Gyumri.

The photos vividly depict the "khachkar forest" that stretches on 3 hills by the Arax River bank and signs of barbaric acts of the past. Sergey Nazaretian told that during their visit the group members counted around 3000-3300 standing, lop-sided and overthrown khachkars (stone cross) including ones found at church graveyards. Most of them were made of yellow and rose sandstone. The two-meter long khachkars leave an unforgettable impression with their skillful work, Christian symbols and images and the warmth that beams from the Armenian spirit that create them.

The group also took photos of a cave nearby Arax with shattered khachkars. One could see that some of them were left on the bank of the river to be washed away during flood periods.

Mr. Nazaretian said that only seven khachkars avoided destruction; those seven were transferred from Nakhijevan to Armenia (Etchmiadzin), Russia and Europe at request of late Catholicos Vazken I.

Azeri diplomatic missions refute groundless charges by Armenia

Source: Trend

Author: S.Agayeva

16.02.2006

The embassies of Azerbaijan and the diplomatic missions at the international organizations will release papers in connection with the ongoing campaign of the Armenian Diaspora on groundless assertions on the so-called destruction of tomb-stones in Julfa District, Tahir Tagizade, the head of the Press and Information Policy Department of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, told Trend.

Tagizade said that the Azerbaijani embassy asserts that our country with consideration of manifold religious cultural heritage is keen on strengthening the political character of the society and announced the ancient Alban cemetery in Julfa District the archeological monument. Tagizade said that for Azerbaijan the protection of all historic and architectural monuments are of great priority. The diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan state that on the base of vague view records which depict some people of unknown nationality, annihilating the medium-size stones of unknown origin the Armenian side appealed to the Azerbaijani authorities with such groundless materials in an effort to distract the attention from such monstrous crimes, which were committed by the Armenian armies in the occupied territory of Azerbaijan. The embassies also stated that no historic and culture monument of Azerbaijani culture heritage was left undamaged. The economic structure in these regions of Azerbaijan is destructed purposefully. As a result of this policy the general damage to culture heritage of Azerbaijan comprises $7bn and includes the destruction of 180 mosques in the territory of Armenia, former Irevan Khannate, over 500 cemeteries, museums, 969 libraries, 850 musical schools, 4 theaters, 4 concert halls.

The said cemetery of Julfa is one of attempts taken in an effort to falsify the realities, Tagizade stated. Azerbaijan is sure that such attempts by the Diaspora are to end in failure and Armenia realizes that the confrontations and groundless charges directed at shifting the responsibilities have no future.

European Parliament Adopts Resolution Condemning Destruction of Armenian Monuments in Old Julfa

YEREVAN (Armenpress)--The European Parliament adopted Thursday a resolution condemning the destruction of Armenian monuments in Old Julfa. 85 members of the European Parliament voted for the adoption of the resolution, 5 against it.

The resolution calls on Azerbaijan to stop the practice of ethnic cleansing and stresses the importance of "respect for minority rights including historical, religious, and cultural heritage."

President of the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD), Hilda Tchoboian noted that the resolution demands that Azerbaijan allow the European parliament delegation to study the case first-hand.

It says that the European Parliament, "demands that Azerbaijan allow missions dedicated to surveying and protecting the archaeological heritage on its territory, especially Armenian heritage, such as experts working with ICOMOS, and also allow a European Parliament delegation to visit the archaeological site at Julfa."

"It also demands that Azerbaijan gives explanation about what happened and the reality should be disclosed. One of the most important points is that Azerbaijan will face an issue on the protection of the cultural heritage," said Tchoboian.

During the session in parliament, the Greens, which were against the adoption of the document, suggested that a point about the destruction of Azeri monuments in Armenia, Karabagh, and neighboring regions be included in the resolution. Their suggestion was declined.

Tchoboian, said the Greens made such a proposal because there are some Turkish parliamentarians in the party.

"The resolution first of all is of moral importance rather than political, that is to say it should have political consequences as well in connection with Azerbaijan-EU relations," said she.

Statements on Azeri Monuments Being Destroyed in Armenia False

21.02.2006 22:16 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail In Russian In Armenian

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ There are no monuments of Azerbaijani culture in Armenia. On the whole, the concept «an Azerbaijani monument» is not used by the historical science, head of the Agency for Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments at the Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs of Armenia, professor of architecture Artem Grigoryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net correspondent. In his words, on the territory of Armenia there are Muslim architecture monuments dating back to 17-19 centuries. «The largest out of these is the Blue Mosque in Yerevan, which operates of Iranian people living in Armenia. There is another mosque in Agarak, which is dilapidated. Works are carried out there to specify the time it was built. There were many mosques and burial places on the territory of Armenia – almost all of these were demolished during the soviet rule. By the way, Christian temples shared their fate,» Grigoryan remarked.

When commenting of Azerbaijanis' statements that Azeri monuments are destroyed on the territory of Armenia, Grigoryan said it is lie – at that a deliberate one. «They know very well that they lie to their own people, however that is the way their propaganda machine works. If they say it as they do not know history, the worse for Azeri historians and political scientists. If we pay attention to every ignorant statement of Azerbaijan's historian, we will be putting ourselves on the same level with them,» Grigoryan emphasized.

Baku Makes Every Effort to Destroy Armenian Culture Traces at State Level

21.02.2006 18:55 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail In Russian In Armenian

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ February 20 Armenian Culture Monuments Subject to Azerbaijan Aggression round table was held in the conference hall of the Institute of Biochemical Physics after Emanuel of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported the Yerkramas newspaper of Armenians of Russia. The panel was held to draw attention of the society to the issue of destruction of Armenian spiritual historical values in Azerbaijan to prevent possible repeated actions. The Russian-Armenian Commonwealth, International Academy of Sciences for National Security Issues and World Peacemaking Organization organized the event. Anti-Armenian policy of official Baku, drawing attention of the international community to prevent the cultural genocide, being committed by Azerbaijan, people’s diplomacy in solving the conflict and the role of international and Russian NGOs in reducing the tension in the region were discussed during it.

Participants of the round table adopted a statement, which in part says, “Humanity witnessed another vandalism act of the Azeri authorities in town of Julfa (Old Jugha), Nakhichevan in 21st century. From the first day of its establishment, Azerbaijan worked for Armenians to leave Artsakh, Nakhichevan and Gandzak, to exterminate Armenian population of Baku and other regions. Azerbaijan today makes every effort at the state level to finally destroy traces of Armenian culture and history in Armenian territories under its control. Destruction of Armenian Khachkars in Julfa again proves that neither Artsakh, nor another region populated by Armenians cannot be part of Azerbaijan. Latest unacceptable actions not only trample human dignity, but also run counter to conventional norms – preservation of the cultural legacy of peoples. According to the UN Convention of 1948 this is an act of genocide. Khachkars at Julfa cemetery are not only part of Armenian, but also common human heritage. By denouncing Azerbaijan’s actions of destroying Khachkars at the Armenian cemetery in Julfa, we urge Azeri authorities to stop the vandalism. We protest against the criminal policy of the Azeri leaders and we address the international community, demanding to express its attitude to the criminal policy of Azerbaijan.”

No One Destroyed Muslim Culture Monuments in Karabakh

21.02.2006 23:07 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail In Russian In Armenian

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Nagorno Karabakh Republic has an Agency for Preservation of Historical Monuments and the Armenian Agency cooperates with it and helps it, head of the Agency for Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments at the Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs of Armenia, professor of architecture Artem Grigoryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. “The NKR is a normal state with all attributes. There are monuments of Muslim culture and cemeteries that no one destroyed,” Artem Grigoryan said. In his words, colleagues from NK ask the Agency to identify or describe some monument rather frequently.

There are two mosques in NKR. One is in Shushi, the Blue Mosque – a monument of Iranian architecture of shah Abbas II (17th century). Baku Going to Protest against EU Resolution on Nakhichevan

22.02.2006 20:42 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail In Russian In Armenian

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ “We voice protest against the resolution on destruction of Armenian monuments in Nakhichevan adopted by the European Parliament,” Azeri Deputy FM Halaf Halafov stated. In his words, the Azeri MFA and other state structure intend to express attitude about the matter. “Presently an appropriate document is being composed by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry,” he said.

To remind, the European Parliament February 16 overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning the Azerbaijani government's destruction of the Armenian cemetery in Djulfa, a unique archaeological treasure located in the Nakhichevan autonomous republic administered by Azerbaijan. The resolution, which was approved by a vote of 85 to 5, noted that, "serious allegations have been raised about the involvement of the Azerbaijani authorities in the destruction of these monuments" and stressed that " Azerbaijan has not provided answers [on this matter to] the former special rapporteur of the United Nations." Based on these and other findings, the European Parliament “strongly condemns the destruction of the Djulfa cemetery […]” and “demands that Azerbaijan allow missions dedicated to surveying and protecting the archaeological heritage on its territory, especially Armenian heritage […].” The measure also asks Azerbaijan to “allow a European Parliament delegation to visit the archaeological site at Djulfa.”

I thought I was the world's premier comedian :) :)

Look what those clowns are talking about.

Will that not cut them off from Nakhjavan?? Good! Maybe then we can throw those Nakhjavanis over the wall to the other side.

They should also consider hiring German and Israeli engineers, those have plenty of experience in wall buiding

Maybe I should have posted this in the humor section.

`The Wall of China' between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Echo reports them in Azerbaijan to be considering the possibility to

build a barrier between Azerbaijan and Armenia. `Sooner or later but

we should raise a wall between Azerbaijan and Armenia to defend

ourselves from one more aggression by the malicious neighbor and not

to let the Azeri people and especially youths forget the criminal

plans of Yerevan. Supporting this project are public figures and MPs.

They note that the wall will be of psychological rather than

defensive purpose.'
