gamavor
German parliament passes Armenian resolution Berlin, June 16, IRNA The German parliament here Thursday approved a resolution aimed at commemorating the expulsion and massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman empire some 90 years ago. Petitioned by all German political parties, the three-page resolution urges Turkey to "take historic responsibility" for the massacres and expulsions of Armenians by the Ottoman government. The resolution points also to a limited German role in the massacres of Armenians since Germany was a close ally of the Ottomans. Turkey has harshly criticized the German resolution, calling it "irresponsible".

DominO123
They haven't used the term genocide. There is an adventages with Germany. Germany has actual archival estimates of Armenian victims which ranges from 1.2-1.5 million..., the Germans can bses themselves on various archival records to support their arguments in a way that no any other nation could. DominO123
Does anyone have a translation of the resolution, the second link suggest that the term "extermination" was used,(see second page) which basically is equivalent as recognising the event as genocide. Dave
If the Christian democrats win the elections in Germany, the word 'genocide' will definitely be used.

If the page two of the news is accurate, the German text used it, which could be considered as an official recognition

ED
GERMAN BUNDESTAG UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION 17.06.2005 03:14 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ The German Bundestag has unanimously adopted the Resolution on the Armenian Genocide sponsored by the Christian Democratic Union/ Christian Social Union without discussion. As reported by the Zaman Turkish newspaper, the document is titled Commemoration of Victims and Deportation of Armenians in 1915: Germany has to participate in reconciliation of Armenians and Turks. The newspaper notes that in spite the document adopted by the Bundestag does not directly mention recognition of the Armenian Genocide, it notes that «many independent historians, as well as parliaments of many countries and international organizations call events of 1915 a genocide.» As reported by RFE/RL, the resolution language uses the word «genocide» only once. Ashot Manucharyan, a journalist residing in Germany, called the document «a statement of cravens.» «The German know well there was a genocide, their archives are full of documents confirming this fact,» Ashot Manucharyan remarked. In his opinion, however «it is better than nothing.» The Resolution notes that the German Government has to urge Turkey «to investigate the Genocide and stimulate reconciliation with Armenians.» «The Parliament is sure there is need for a fair historical investigation, which is the most important basis for reconciliation,» the Resolution notes. The Resolution recommends forming a commission composed of Turkish, Armenian and foreign historians to study the events taken place in early 20th century. Besides, the document notes that the Turkish authorities «suppress attempts of discussion of the topic in the country.» It should be noted that the MPs urged the German Foreign Ministry to open archives referring to the period. Med
NATO?? What have they got to do with it? Nato isn't the one defending them.
DominO123
"organized expulsion and destruction of the Armenians" and according to the new above, the term "extermination." I would call this a genocide recognition, all the elements are mentioned beside the term genocide.
phantom22
Please note that much of the Turkish press are characterizing the German Resolution as a "Genocide" resolution. The Germans have boxed the Turks into a corner by not using the word "genocide." Now they are at a loss. It is imperative for them to go to the next step and state that no massacre occured. When another parliament solely condemns their expulsion of the Armenians from Eastern Anatolia they will proceed to state that very few Armenians ever lived there, that it was a primarily a Turkish province. Soon they will become the laughing-stock of the civilized world. Edited June 17, 2005 by phantom22
Bakersfieldian
When the hell did turkey become part of the civilized world? Z'areh
"organized expulsion and destruction of the Armenians" and according to the new above, the term "extermination." I would call this a genocide recognition, all the elements are mentioned beside the term genocide. style_images/master/snapback.png Yes Q, I agree, this is a very strong wording, and since "genocide" has legal remifications (which would have pleased us more) nonetheless here is a wartime ally apologizing to the Armenians for not effectively being able to stop the "organized expulsion and destruction of the Armenians", if that is not an euphamism for genocide I don't know what is. Germany, in my opinion has totally crushed Turkish moral standards, and effectively has raised the bar much higher than Turks are able to meet. I wonder with what face the govenment elite would be able to say "we have not committed acts of genocide in our history". Having said all this, I doubt the outcome of all these pressures on Turkey would translate into any material gains to Armenians. As soon as a trace of remorse is seen or heard from Turkish government officials the West is going to bury this issue as quickly as possible and continue with daily business. Only a big moral victory is waiting for us......which brings me to my childhood history lessons where we learned of our countless moral victories throughout the centuries. phantom22
The few remnants of our family have one of the strongest cases for retrieval of our properties in Turkey. We have all our papers thanks to an Arab friend who smuggled them out of the Armenian hinterland to my grandmother in Bolise. Our ancestors were also so well known that we are documented in the history of the era. It is imminent that we will seek legal counsel to pursue this.
