Does it really matter what type of gas you use for a car? Is it better to use regular for an old car and premium for a new one? And finally what's the heck is an "octane" and what's deisel? Sip Posted May 13, 2005 Report Share Posted May 13, 2005 You should run the lowest grade recommended by your car manufacturer. Anything more and you are throwing money out the window unless you have made modifications to the engine. Usually, you are ok with 87 gas unless you are running some sort of sports car or high end SUV. But the owners manual should say it in that case. As far as diesel, it's a different type of fuel for a different type of engine. You should NEVER put diesel in a normal car! You can't anyway because the nosle won't fit most likely but still .. be careful. Well, unless of course you have a diesel engine in your car. If you want to know abou octane, this is a good source.
