nairi
I think we discussed abstract painters before, and the likes of Picasso who began as realist painters being able to paint like Rembrandt, but chose to deviate from that form for his own artistic reasons. Now apply this to music. Of course the people that I know who make good electronic music are also able to play Rachmaninoff or even improvise a new Armenian tune that sounds like it came from Komitas. These people (or person in this case) chose to make electronic music as well. And they make it well. Very well. On the other hand, those so-called musicians who claim that electronic music is not music and it's a piece of cake to make, can't even play 'Fur Elise' with two hands. Not surprisingly, they are also unable to make decent electronic music. Again, I challenge you. And I am eager to see what you are made of. I promise to take my generalizations back if you, as an untalented a-musical individual, are able to make something that I will genuinely enjoy listening to and consider good, maybe even more than good. Arvestaked
That was funny. The fact that they can play Rachmaninoff does not mean they can compose Rachmaninoff. I am not talking about strict musicianship here. I am talking about the creative process of making music... being responsible for what is good music and not playing someone elses creation. And, by the way, we are talking about rap, not everything electronic. I appreciate Aphex Twin, Future Sound of London, and Autechre because they are creative and, even though I don't listen to him, so is Trent Reznor. And even they are not astoundingly talented, in my opinion. Edited February 16, 2005 by Arvestaked
nairi
The same applies to rap. Good music is good regardless of genre. And as I said, these people can also compose next to playing already existing music.
Arvestaked
Well, I would be taking your word for it, would I not. Rap sucks.
nairi
We already had this discussion with Azat and back then I said, I'm not here to convince anyone to like a certain song or not. It's up to him (and you) to decide whether you want to be open-minded enough to find rap that you might enjoy and think is worthy to your ears. I won't be the one to give you names or samples. It's up to you to go look for good music, that is if you are interested at all. And hey, if you are genuinely unable to find any after a long and hard search outside of commercial radio stations, then you are always free to make your own and set the standard. Arvestaked
Well that was loaded. Just because I hate rap, I am closed-minded? No no. I liked rap when I was younger. But I outgrew it and moved on because it's boring, uncreative, mindless bull droppings. It has nothing to do with being closed-minded. nairi
When you say you liked rap, does that mean you liked everything that is categorized as rap or were you selective in your taste? If the latter, how come you are unable to be like that now?
Azat
now now, you are not saying that Nairi needs to grow up, or when she grows up she will not like rap.

nairi
Azat, although I may or may not enjoy listening to some of the music that I enjoy now in a few years from now, I am almost convinced (knowing myself) that I will continue to look for things that I will enjoy regardless of genre. Because what is rap? It's just speaking rhythmically about a given subject. I kind of implicitly made this point by posting a link to an acapella rap track (in Jazz) to show that beat or melody is not necessary in the background to rap. You made the observation that rap was used all the way back at the turn of the 20th century. Today as well, there are songs that employ rap in parts of their songs (think of Massive Attack or Gorillaz among others) and yet no one would classify their music in the same category as say Eminem or Busta Rhymes. vava
... or Busta Rhymes. style_images/master/snapback.png Man I can't believe he's still recording! He's been in the scene since the eighties! That kind of longevity is not very common in Rap.....
kakachik77
I recently saw Mos Def rap with no music in the background on Chappelle Show and I was mesmerized for a moment. I think rapping is not as easy as it seems, I mean not every individual can "smooth talk" like that. Having said that every individual has his/her likes and dislikes within music genres. Arvestaked
I will not disagree with that. But I still do not consider it to be musical and I have never really been a big fan of def poetry.
nairi
I guess it depends on how you define musical.

Stormig
I had a friend who a coupla years ago wrote up a rap song with an Armenian theme. It was for amusement value, though, and a riot!
lara-chan
what's the name of those armenian rappers who think too seriously of themselves? the twins? now they... they are a riot. it's like watching a cult classic movie and laughing at all the "scary" parts. Nakharar
Now all that is missing is Armenian techno. How swell. <_<
lara-chan
well...it's already been put into most hye singers' background music, so.... but yeah, i know what you mean. i'm sure there are armenians putting out jungle and D&B.. but i'm most certain that we've attempted trance at some point. Proud EXPAT
I just need to say that most Armo's are not too well informed with sub-categories of house music. Nax asem vor techno IS NOT trance. House has become the main branch of dance music that probably has over 50 sub-categories, including techno, deep house, techno house, trance, soul house, uk house, hip house, uk house, and so on and so on. Most Armo's, I have realized, call ANYTHING with a 4/4 rhythm as techno, regardless of the fact that "techno" has never really become mainstream like all the sub-categories of house, including the current trance craze. There is such music as Armenian trance as well as simple house rhythms with Armenian elements. And actually they are quite good. Armo techno I have yet to hear. In my opinion real techno is a skill not every basement music producer can successfully create. Hope to hear it mixed with some Armenian influences one day.
