So, how about we share some office stories? I'll start with mine.

 

Last week we got so bored for a number of reasons that we were all down. Administration assumes we are assembly-line workers, so no surfing the internet lest you wish to disclose your private life and personal tastes and whatever. Breaks are always coffee breaks and that gets old after a while.

So what do we do?

I convinced my co-workers to play a word game. It was merely picking the name of a country or city and then the rest following up with another name of a country or city starting with the last letter of the previous.

As the game dragged on, it started taking longer and longer to think up names, and to avoid suspicion we faced our PC's and carried on, everyone reciting their turn.

"Limassol."

"Luxemburg."

"Guinea-Bissau."

"Uruguay."

"York."

"Kent."

Got boring after a while as ideas were expended, with "e," "a" and "n" being the most frequently used, so I'm thinking that the next time we have another crisis like that, we should make it a little more flexible yet still challenging.

I got so caught up in it that as someone was telling me about Beirut in the 1980's (this was the evening of Hariri's murder), how it had been turned into dust like Dresden, I couldn't help but try to think of a name that started with "n"...

You know it's interesting, I remember reading about this sort of a game in a novel about a CIA spy. Another game they played involved calling out a country name and someone had to say something with the accent of the natives and mention a traditional dish, anyone who would not be able to do either ended up being disqualified from the game and so on...

 

My office story? Well we all chip in to buy a 2 gallons of water p/month, when the gallon is empty we must replace it with a new one. We dare each other to find a "healthy" looking student and watch him flex his muscles while he inserts the bottle. Not a very intelligent form of entertainment but it does stimulate your creativity.

That 'word' game is actually (at its heart) a college drinking game. And you can play not just with geography, but famous people too. The first letter of the last name, becomes the first letter of the first name (Nana Muskoori, Michael Douglas, Danny Devito - oh yeah, 'doubles' change the game's direction - so you can have a heated back and forth between two people: Danny Devito, Donald Duck, Daffy Duck etc.)

 

So where's the drinkin' part you ask? Well as soon as it's your turn, you put your stein of beer to your mouth and you start chugging it down. You can't stop until you've come up with your answer. You have to think while you drink, hence the name of the game: Think While You Drink.

 

Y'all would be surprised at how slowly your mind can come up with names of famous people when you have the rich golden stuff pouring down your throat.

 

It's been a long while, but I still remember how to play, I think

Oh yeah - we don't play this game at the office!

That's wild, Vavchka. One co-worker's friend works in this UN departmental office where they have Happy Hour every Friday afternoon - in the office - so maybe we should go over and convince people to have that "Think While You Drink," never to be welcome there again. Vava, yer givin me idears.
