many of the buildings will not be there soon - including the Old Baghniq - soon all of that will be Condos & places for tourists - an Italian Co. has been buying each and every building & "Baraqs" behind Rabiz

many of the buildings was not even there before - some are resolutely "build" and will we demolished soon - big "house or apartment like - that have big square meter:) to be sold or have been sold to the Italian Co. for 1000+ per square meeter

that part of the town well be changed soon - lets hope the park would not suffer

across was an old Soviet Era hotel Sevan if I'm not wrong it's owned by MAnukyans - and it's in horrible condition - the government is not letting him demolish it - it has been in courts for long time - it's destroying its self

The potential international tourist industry in Armenia, which could employ many lower skilled Armenians, is being destroyed to feather the nests of the nor-Harout land developers. This sacriledge will create a Yerevan that is not uniquely Armenian in any way, but just a copy of any international city. A "gold mine" tourist industry is being thrown out the window. What a shame. Megk!

The buildings that make Yerevan unique are the buildings designed by A. Tamanyan or the ones designed in his style afterwards. All other buildings however old and dusty they might be are not Armenian, they are poor remnants of Russian-European provincial architecture. I couldn't care less about these last ones being destroyed.

I cannot find any other "Armenian" architecture except for Tamanyan's style, the opera house being its finest example.

Nevertheless, they are a tourist draw especially for tourists from Europe. Are we Armenians schizophrenic? Many of us (e.g. Artaxias and that nut Avetisyan) claim vociferously that we are Europeans (a distorted concept since we have Hebrew, Assyrian, Persian, Chinese, Mongol and Hindu genetic strains and a mixed culture). Turning Yerevan into cookie-cutter city will not help our tourism. What is next? Demolishing the Matenadaran building or Opera House to make big-bucks for a developer buddy of the President Kocharian hoping to build another luxury condominium or hotel?

So that you have an idea what are you talking about let us establish first that not one is taking down Matenadaran, Opera House or any national landmarks. We are talking about some old, dusty quarters of Yerevan like Kond, some 20 to 30 one or two storied quasi-colonial buildings. You can also add some nightmares of Soviet architecture like the Youth Palace (or the Krtsats Kukuruz) or Hotel Dvin.

I highly doubt that this stuff was going to attract tourists.

Yup. This year's snow caught the municipality off guard. That was the reason for kilometers of traffic jam. Not that they have ever been ON guard ... but this year they outperformed themselves. Meanwhile, I had never seen this much snow in Yerevan during my whole pathetic life.
