Memory

As all of you know already I have an atrocious memory. I forget everything. I learn so much and then I simply cannot recall the details, names or dates. I have so much information stored in my brain that if it would take me years to unravel it all. The trouble is that it's useless because most often I can't recall the information. I also have trouble remembering dates, names of people, birthdays, addresses and phone numbers. It's really a horrible mess.

So I turn to you, my fellow HyeForumers, for tips and tricks to help me improve my memory. Armen had a few brilliant suggestions, I started applying them, I already forgot 3 times. :(

By the way, the other day I was making coffee for myself and I forgot to pour water, so the coffee maker was schizophrenically steaming and making slurping noises. Then this other time, I poured coffee into a cup and reached for a jar to put some sugar into it, I ended up putting two full spoons of raw coffee into my coffee, only later to realize what I was doing. My mind is in another universe. Domino!!! This is all your fault. By the way I am folding feverishly, where are you?

Please, please, suggestions are very appreciated and very much needed!

Perhaps a forum wise-ass will give you a good advice and tips, but all I care about is my $450 that you have forgotten to return to me :)

This might be of help to you. To me, my memory is just something that's there and works in different ways. Sometimes I remember things by repeating and hearing myself say it. Sometimes I remember by visualizing the image of either what I saw or how I pictured what I was supposd to remember. Sometimes I remember by association ... I often tend to associate things with food for example. Sometimes I make jokes and rhymes out of things. And sometimes I remember things by enforcing structures on them ... or by understanding the principles behind them which allow me to arrive at the correct piece of information without having to store all details. It really depends.

Sasun, did you have in mind this wise-ass? Seap, I am not listening to any advice from Anthony Robbins, he's a damn charlatan!

Just a little side note...I wasn't asking HOW YOUR memory works, I was asking for tips and tricks.

Maybe, I don't know ... I've never actually listened to that thing. Well, the only memory I know of is mine. And notice I didn't try to take advantage of you in your moment of weakness :P

I may have mentioned this elsewhere: I only remember things that I care about or use on a daily basis.

Don't sound so sure of what you have mentioned ... are you? Does it mean you don't care about what you've mentioned or that you don't use what you yourself say on a daily basis? :blow:

Sorry had to get some wise-assity out of my system as it was really building up with no release :D

I guess now we know who really cares to help and who just wants to talk about himself/herself. :P

Sasun, I already apologized for my absent-mindedness, now can we move on to my treatment? :).

Right now, I am not forgetting about the fact that I must study for my finals, but am I doing it? I think the evidence suggests otherwise. Why can't I forget the address of this website?

You have exactly the problem I have... this might be linked to your dreams. Bring Domino in a discussion and expect him to come up with something like this. :)

Since you dream alot, this mean that most of your REM sleep process dreams... REM sleep is believed to be a key factor in the process of memories; it's kind of like our REM sleep is too occupied in the dreaming process and less with the organisation and memorisation...

From my theory, Azat would have a good memory,(most of his REM is used for memorisation, and very few of it is used to memorise dreams :) ) and this many times is as well associated with organizations. :) How we organise many times reflects how our brain organise the new acquired informations.

Do I have a way that might help you? Maybe, but I have never tried anything, because it would be another thing to remember. If I was to propose you something, you will probably forget to apply it.

So for me it is acceptance, when I forget something, I do not try to remember it, it's useless... this way I forgetr less. Just accept yourself as you are. :)

You know you are absolutely correct! In my dreams I remember such intricate details, which are lost completely somewhere in the attic of my mind. I recall languages, wallpaper, people's faces, my class notes. But I can't control my dreams, I wish I would be able to request certain memories.

From my theory, Azat would have a good memory,(most of his REM is used for memorisation, and very few of it is used to memorise dreams and this many times is as well associated with organizations.  How we organise many times reflects how our brain organise the new acquired informations.

Azat has a fantastic memory. He always remembers everything. Azat when you return from your mini-vacation will you be my mentor?

I must be transparent. :D

Shish, I feel like if my proposition would be the one that Homer would give.  :)

style_images/master/snapback.png

Which one?

"All right, brain, I don't like you and you don't like me - so let's just do this and I'll get back to killing you with beer."

or

"Trying is the first step toward failure."

or

"Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals. Except the weasel."

or maybe the other classic Homer quote shared by Kelly Bundy?

"And how is 'education' supposed to make me feel smarter, everytime I learn something new it pushes some old stuff out of my brain!"

Sip,

Those are very helpful techniques based on sound principles. I'm also a "lazy" person, so I minimize what needs to be memorized!

For the most part, they can be described with the following

1- Abstraction

2- Deduction

3- A Coding Theory principle called "Minimum Description Length" or "Minimum Message Length"

4- A decoding technique called "Maximum likelihood decoding," comparable to a more popular technique called "fuzzy matching" extensively used by search engines

I'm familiar with the idea that "we continue learning during our sleep" and some phases of the dream cycle may be "biochemically stabilizing" - I consider "memory" as a certain relatively stable biochemical distribution, mainly - not only - along both sides of the neurone/axone membrane (or muscle cells membrane for "physical memory.")

Nevertheless, I can't agree with your theory because

1- I don't know - i.e. personally - anybody who dreams as often and as much as I do

2- I have a very good "LONG TERM" memory (for what matters to me!) My "short term" is "unstable" mainly because I'm a distracted person! I can be very focused and disciplined, but my mind wanders constantly! But I can recall easily!

By the way, do you think that listening to REM ("Losing My Religion") may improve the Memory? :)

I do #1-3 all the time. You really got my attention with that #4 ... I never thought of myself as actively doing any Maximum likelihood decoding but I now definitely see that that goes on a lot as well. We have to do fuzzy matching all the time! I guess in a sense, the most obvious example would be taking a multiple choice test ... you either know the answer, can arrive at it by deduction and elimination, have to purely guess, or do some sort of maximum likelihood fuzzy matching type thing to your built up knowledge :D

But in your list, you left out the most basic one! Just pure and simple "Storage" (sometimes it's the easiest of all, especially when it needs no effort or happens by itself through repetition).

I don't consider myself too good at pure storage/recall ... but things are definitely stored in there and depending on stimuli either from my current experiences or active thoughts, my brain somehow seems to trigger recall of some very obscure things that I would never have even imagined as having stored in there.

It's really fascinating how we remember stuff ... nothing like PC's where if it's not in your registers, it's in the cache, and if not in the cache, it's in the RAM, and if not in the RAM, it's in swap on the disk .... and if not there, then you either have to go get it online or install it from CDs :D

I was focusing on techniques to optimize the storage and usage/recall of information, as opposed to the storage and usage itself! In other words, the tips and techniques - that you have mentioned - to better memorize!

I don't consider myself too good at pure storage/recall ..

style_images/master/snapback.png

I don't want to be good! I always resisted!

From a systemic point of view, the Von Neumann model is too simplistic to explain the highly complex system that is our body! Even a single cell is far more complex than the most sophisticated computers - i.e. hardware+firmware.

I'm truly fascinated by the human being, in so many ways!

From a systemic point of view, the Von Neumann model is too simplistic to explain the highly complex system that is our body!

And that is perhaps where we are going the wrong way with "memory" here. Storing things in a computer or PDA, what we might write down, put somewhere on some storage shelf, or record on a tape or cd, is probably very different than how our minds process and store things.

The processing and storage are so intertwined. For example we see a car passing from one angle, we remember it ... and the next time we might see that car from a completely different angle, yet we recognize and recall having seen that car. This is no simple "storage/retrieval" ... it's far more complex. So many things took place from initially seeing the car, abstracting to a "general car", extracting specific featues of this car such as color, shape, context, etc, and then storing that information.

... then we see the car again from another angle we go through a similar exercise of extracting featurs, abstracting, mapping the object we see to the "car" concept, and then matching what we saw to what we have seen (fuzzy recall?) and go on from there.

Yes ... "how do we remember things?" That IS the question!
