Azat
... I also have trouble remembering dates, names of people, birthdays, addresses and phone numbers. It's really a horrible mess. ... style_images/master/snapback.png Why even worry about this stuff. Get a nice PDA or use MS Outlook and all that info will be there so that way you can concentrate on other stuff. The coffee stories and such are more of being absent minded then memory. no? Sip
Get a nice PDA ... Well, since probably neither of you two remembers (Azat and Eve), here's a heads up ... Eve, by the way, I still don't remember what Dan used to call you

Azat
From my theory, Azat would have a good memory,(most of his REM is used for memorisation, and very few of it is used to memorise dreams ) and this many times is as well associated with organizations. How we organise many times reflects how our brain organise the new acquired informations. style_images/master/snapback.png Azat has a fantastic memory. He always remembers everything. Azat when you return from your mini-vacation will you be my mentor? style_images/master/snapback.png I use to have great memory, but as life gets more and more complex I have forget simple things. This is why I write done everything that I would need. I have all birthdays that I need to remember(not just birthdays but all important days), Phone numbers, Email addresses and appointments. for those dates(appointments and "important days") I give myself an alert with appropriate amount of time in advance based on the event. ie management meeting - 30 minutes in advance, Birthdays and anniversaries - 1 day in advance, and Doctors Appointment - 2 days in advance in case I need to inform employees or management that I will be late and such. I also put all my tasks(research, things I promise others, any work in general) on Outlook and put alerts on those as well. With that clutter gone I can concentrate on other things that I need to do concentrate on and remember. I guess 90% of my memory is in MS outlook. Anoushik
I learn so much and then I simply cannot recall the details, names or dates. I have so much information stored in my brain that if it would take me years to unravel it all. The trouble is that it's useless because most often I can't recall the information. I also have trouble remembering dates, names of people, birthdays, addresses and phone numbers. It's really a horrible mess. With all due respect, Evelina, but how do you know you have actually learned so much if you can't remember what you learned? Like Nairi said I remember things that I encounter on a day to day basis. I do notice that every day I feel more secure about music theory and harmony as I both teach and study more these subjects. I have forgotten the details in my General Education classes, but I do generally remember what I learned in those classes (hence the name, General Education ) But I remember things that I've looked up on my own much better than anything I ever learned in a class (I guess it shows that I had more interest in the subjects I read about by myself) I have a great musical memory and can recall any tune I heard only one time months, even years ago. But I easily forget names. I'm horrible when it comes to that. It often happens that someone I met a while ago will remember my name (or at least part of my name) yet I have no clue what his name sounds like. Lately, I also notice that I lose my memory in a conversation. I'm about to say something to my friends (and I think whatever I have to say is important) but as soon as I open my mouth to say it I forget what I wanted to say, and I might not remember it until two days later. Strange. Sometimes I recall information by imaginig what it looked like. This might help. Imagine where you read the information, what the page looked like. I do this all the time when I have exams. I just "see" my notes in my mind. Similarly I "see" the music on the staff when I play on the piano by memory. DominO123
I'm familiar with the idea that "we continue learning during our sleep" and some phases of the dream cycle may be "biochemically stabilizing" - I consider "memory" as a certain relatively stable biochemical distribution, mainly - not only - along both sides of the neurone/axone membrane (or muscle cells membrane for "physical memory.") Nevertheless, I can't agree with your theory because 1- I don't know - i.e. personally - anybody who dreams as often and as much as I do 2- I have a very good "LONG TERM" memory (for what matters to me!) My "short term" is "unstable" mainly because I'm a distracted person! I can be very focused and disciplined, but my mind wanders constantly! But I can recall easily! By the way, do you think that listening to REM ("Losing My Religion") may improve the Memory? style_images/master/snapback.png The problem with the term "dreaming alot" is that it is subjective. What we should mean is that we do remember having dreamed alot... or better, we remember alot of our dreams. Only a sleep study would know the proportion we passes in our dream, and even then it is subjective. REM sleep is believed to have a major role in the process of memory, and most of our dreams happen in REM. With time, I have acquired the experience to know which dream is a REM dream, and which one is a stage 4 dream. When I awake, I just know a dream is REM or not, and this has to do again with memory, I feel that the recording of the dream has not been writen at the same place as a Stage 4. I tried explaining this impression to some, no one understand what I mean. It's kind of REM is more associated with a different sort of processing of short term memory, in them, there are reduced selfawarness and depersonalisation, while still maintained some level of consciousness(self-awarness). I do associated self-awarness with short term memory in part(long term is the other part)... so I did the connection. Stage 3-4 dreams are different, there is some sort of self-awarness(throught dreams) that is not really connected to short term memory, but more like long term... as if you were a spectator, without freewill. I know this seem again a product of my random mind. It's kind of hard to explain what I mean. That's what I feel. Short term memory is used for a form of consciousness that modify, the kind of the observer that modify, the long term is kind of what has been already stored, can't be really modified without a process from the short memory. I am entirly talking of feeling here from dreams, so I'm not going technical. The long term memory is what is observed... this interaction between those two creats wakefulness, the awakness. Normaly, at Stage 4, there are some dreams(more than specialists thought first), those are the observations prepared to be observed... after Stage 4(unless someone has a sleep disorder), REM happens, the observer... observes what has been prepared as the observation... this prepares us for wakefulness... This stage of 1-2-3-4-REM etc... is maintained during our sleep. Sometimes, there are anomalies, a sort of intrusion of REM, when you're still in Stage 4... when REM happens sooner than expected during Stage 4, than you have a sort of interaction between the short and long term, and it's the only time beside wakefullness that this happens. We have very weird dreams what this happens, you can have precognition dreams, you will actually believe that I am a fool if you never had any. It is true that a generalisation isn't good, but I'm pretty sure that if there was to be a poll, those that dreams more than others are more prone to memory problems... because the short term memory is not prepared like others for wakefulnness to store the information, and when the information is storted, it isn't storted as it should. I do want to continue, but I do feel like a zombie right now. BTW, my random mind is saying as well that this is linked with multiple universes. But that's for another time. BTW, you didn't knew of anyone that dreamed more than you. Now you know one. I dream pathologically.
Anonymouse
As all of you know already I have an atrocious memory. I forget everything. So I turn to you, my fellow HyeForumers, for tips and tricks to help me improve my memory. Armen had a few brilliant suggestions, I started applying them, I already forgot 3 times. By the way, the other day I was making coffee for myself and I forgot to pour water, so the coffee maker was schizophrenically steaming and making slurping noises. Then this other time, I poured coffee into a cup and reached for a jar to put some sugar into it, I ended up putting two full spoons of raw coffee into my coffee, only later to realize what I was doing. My mind is in another universe. Domino!!! This is all your fault. By the way I am folding feverishly, where are you? Please, please, suggestions are very appreciated and very much needed! style_images/master/snapback.png As Jim Roam said, "Don't trust your memory. Write it down".
