PARIS, France (CNN) -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat remained in a coma Friday at a French military hospital as conflicting reports about the Palestinian leader's health continued to emerge.

 

U.S. officials contend the ailing 75-year-old is near death. Palestinian representatives said he is in a reversible coma that doctors induced to perform a biopsy.

 

On Friday evening, a hospital spokesman issued a short statement about Arafat's condition and told the press he would not answer questions.

 

Christian Estripeau of the Percy Military Training Hospital said Arafat's condition had not worsened since Thursday and he is in stable condition.

 

Muslim custom requires burial within 24 hours of death. Two U.S. administration officials have said machines were keeping Arafat alive until his family and officials from France, Israel and Egypt could reach a decision about a burial site.

 

"No one thinks he'll survive," a senior State Department official said.

It was just announced at 1:45 PM EST that he has in fact passed away. Pres. Bush expressed his condolences on the air.

Could it be that Mount Arafat, one of the holiest sites of Islam (see below) was actually named after Ararat/Masis Sar/Ler, if with a somewhat modified spelling?

I just saw part of Arafat's funeral (while his body was still in Ramallah before being sent to Cairo). Talk about a backwards society. And I mean BACKWARDS. Where else does the coffin of a STATE LEADER end up in the middle of a large mass with people stomping on each other? All this while others are shooting bullets in the air (which are landing somewhere). At one point the coffin had stopped at a stalemate cause everybody was pushing from a different direction. People were falling down on each other. None of these fools has enough sense to realize that maybe if they got out of the way the coffin would be carried away easily by just a couple of people.

 

In a way it was funny (but more sad). Even centuries ago I would not be surprised if some tribes had more order and common sense in similar settings.

Excuuuuse me!!

So, now Ara B. is the ultimate judge and jury of what is best for the Palestinians?

How is Arafat diffrenet from our own revolutionaries of yore, or even today? You name them. No means, no media, no true allies.

Of course he did not have total command and ease of the English language, he was no Churchill, he was constantly portrayed as the bumbling, stuttering and the crude terrorist, but how do we know what he was/is to his own people? He held the torch high for his entire life. Does anyone remember an interview where he was granted the dignity to express himself in full?

 

And now, we see more exposure in a few days than he was granted during his 50 years of struggle.

 

Does the media know that old Armenian adage... "Gna merir ari sirem"? Is not that what we do to our heroes too? Among others Dro comes to mind.

 

I think we should concentrate on what is best for us and let the Palestinian people take care of their own affairs.

 

Of all the people, we would dare to criticize and denigrate his memory just as his own people are showing their adoration and admiration while the western media is digging deep in the mud to denigrate him, what with embeszzled millions etc.

We would be the ones to criticize him! We, a people who have never had a personnage in our entire history of four thousand years who has lasted as long as he did . Name me one Armenian personnage that has earned our unqualified admiration and adoration, be they in antiquity or today. Read about what we say about our so-called heroes of yesteryears. No! Read about what we say about our "heroes" of today. Be their names, Levon, Robert, Vazken ... Arkady...

I have raised this question on numerous occasions. Name me ONE Armenian leader/hero that enjoys our unqualified and enduring admiration. Tigran, Arshak,Vardan, Rostom, Andranik, Serob... who else?

 

Then again, of course!!

 

The Palestinians could learn a lesson or two from us,(sarcasm??) all 8 million"Arafats" of us to know what is best for us. All 8 million of us, individually, AB being at the top of the list, who has NOT only stashed away millions in anonymous Swiss Bank Accounts, but who subsides solely thanks to the generosityand the welfare of the people and the government of of Canada. He should, if he could get out of Kitchener and see what the world looks like. To see what it takes to make a living without the benevolent welfare state of Canada.

 

Armat, you stated in another thread that you had to work today, Saturday, Sabbath? The hell with it! Our "Sabbath is Sunday. Yet, it seems AB has never had to work in his entire life aside from contemplating his... navel. And he is our "GURU"? Guru of what? How to subsist and denigrate our "culture" subsidized by the generosity of the people of Canada?

It was a magnificent, beautiful, tear-inducing scene. You are right - no "State Leader" these days would recieve or deserve such a send-off. Most of them would deserve to be hacked apart, their bones fed to the street dogs.

Since we are discussing Arafat lets do focus on him. Last twenty years under Arafat Palestinian situation denigrated further into misery while the settlements kept growing. Last intifada brought nothing more then almost total collapse what remained of a Palestinian economy. Major Palestinian cities look like rumble.

We judge any leader by intelligent strategic decisions, which bare fruit and not hindering and stifling society. Arafat repeatedly silenced intellectuals and his critics and people who could of come up with better strategy then throwing rocks at tanks.

Do I want to hear what Arafat had to say in full interview? No, the results speak louder.

Arpa I did not catch the Sat. Sabbath thing.I have a real job.I sell wines.AB does say insightful things often and I find nothing wrong skimming through his work.
