Armenia In Music - Help Wanted

Hi!

I'm a student form the Netherlands, interested in the Armenian culture and diaspora. I need your help for an assignment: I'm looking for a few names in music that really represent Armenia. Old, or new, doesn't matter: what do you guys think are the top 5 essential bands/songs/genres that represent the identity of Armenia? It's really hard for an outsider to find the 'big, important names' in the chaos you find on the internet.

I love System of a Down, found out about their roots, and now want to know more about Armenian music. Would you guys say that you can still hear some bits and pieces of 'real Armenian identity' in SOAD?

Could you help me to describe Armenian music, from all angles?? Thanks a lot!!

You can also mail me if you like.

Yes, Komitas :) You might like "Ter Voghormia" on the Patarag (Divine Liturgy) which Komitas rearranged. SOAD hum it on Arto, the hidden track on Toxicity with Arto Tuncboyacyan.

See: http://www.komitas.am/eng/list_works.htm

Classical, I would suggest Khachaturian of course, as well as Khachatur Avetissian and Lucine Zakarian.

Minstrels: Sayat-Nova

More modern: Rouben Hakhverdian, Gor Mkhitarian, Artsruni, Bambir (Gamavor will love me for this one!), and more recently, Cascade and Deti Picasso.

Other than that, I suggest these links:

You might be able to find something you like. In case you don't read Russian, try this alphabet:

Welcome to Hyeforum btw! Hope you keep us notified on how your project went!

As for SOAD and Armenian music, I remember they once said in an interview that they play rock, and that rock is universal, that it has no ethnicity. I'm not sure how much Armenian tradition or folk you can find in it, but certainly Arto is based on an Armenian church hymn. That's it really. I'm sure those links I gave and many more if you click on will give you an overall view of what Armenian music encompasses and what Armenian musicians have done and are doing.

Good luck once again!

Hey,

Ok well personally as much as Ruben Hakhverdian, Gor Mkhitarian, Vahan Artsruni are popular among Armenians, I do not think they would be appropriate for your assignment since they do not reflect Armenian music faithfully. Like it might just sound like any other music. In my opinion, I think you might want to check Alla Levonian, Shushan Petrosian for true Armenian music, also look for Olga Ayvazian and Manan in the pop music field and Nersik Ispirian for folk. Of course there are the classics like some mentioned such as Komitas and Sayat Nova, but they're not contemporary artists, more like composers and arrangers (I don't know if it matters in your prject) whose songs are performed by many of these singers. Also, look for Ruben Mateosian and Hovannes Badalian for serious classic/traditional music.

Thank you all! Lots of research for me to do. Thanks for the links, but the Russian is sometimes a problem: when you think 'woohoo, mp3's!' I click once more and find myself on a site where I can't understand anything...

I read in a French interview with Serj Tankian that he especially liked Karnig Sarkissian, Harout Pamboukdjian and Rouben Hakhverdian.

Yeah, rock is universal, and calling them nu-metal would be some sort of an insult, but some of the singing lines do have a sort of eastern flavour, and lots of times you'll hear those 'ringing' guitar/mandoline things.

I'm also interested in the lyrics of SOAD, concerning the diaspora. I read on several websites that the song Chop Suey refers to something which a 'Father Armeni' stated, with the 'Father, why have you forsaken me'-part in it?

Wow! They like Karnig Sarkissian??? He sucks!!!! I guess he's patriotic. Is that why they like him?? Harut/Harout is funny. He turned a lot of traditional (wedding) songs into "pop", like Ara Vay Vay, Aman Telo and Hey Jan Ghapama. He was really big in the 1980s. He's been pretty much replaced by Aram Asatryan, Tata Simonian and the like.

As for Chop Suey, I have no idea.. Could be..

Oh and I do agree with Hayemyes on Rouben Matevossian and Hovhannes Badalian.

to clarify one thing. Ohanna Mtghyan the female lead singer of Cascade is the lady that use to sing "Hay em yes" song with that grotesque Aram Asatrian guy. But she realizes that to be a true artist she need not sell her self like many others and moved on to form Cascade soon after.

BTW: I love her voice.
