On Sunday, April 24, 2005 the first official Memorial in Germany commemorating the Armenian Genocide has been inaugurated in the Hanseatic City of Bremen (northern Germany). The beautiful Khatchkar has been set up in a very central place, in the city park close to the Central Train Station. The Police had made its arrangements though, so the blessing and inauguration has been accomplished without any interferences. The Foundation of Armenian Cultural Heritage (Stiftung Armenisches Kulturerbe) has made this and the setting up of a second Memorial possible. In less than a year they have arranged everything. The two Khatchkars are made in Armenia. Also thanks to the Mayor of the Hanseativ City of Bremen, Dr. Henning Scherf, who did not yield to the Turks protests and bomb threat. He said that he feels "...obligated to give the remembrance a place in our (German) society". Dr. Henning Scherf, Dr. Jochen Mangelsen (author) and Mr. Helmut Donat (editor) held excellent speeches in the St. Stephani church after the Badarak. They talked clearly about Genocide and also about the complicity/ joint guilt of the Germans during the Genocide. On Sunday, May 1, 2005 the second memorial will be set up in Brunswick (Braunschweig) also located in a central and public space. Dokumente aus dem Politischen Archiv des deutschen Auswärtigen Amts" Am 24. April 2005 jährt sich zum 90. Mal der Beginn des Völkermords an den Armeniern, den Elie Wiesel einen »Holocaust vor dem Holocaust« nannte. Bis heute wird er von der Türkei geleugnet, bis heute ist die Verstrickung des deutschen Kaiserreichs in den ersten Genozid des 20. Jahrhunderts kaum bekannt. Am 24. April 1915 ließ die jungtürkische Regierung des Osmanischen Reichs die gesamte armenische Elite in der Hauptstadt Konstantinopel verhaften. Es folgte die systematische Vernichtung der armenischen Bevölkerung innerhalb von nur wenigen Monaten. Wer nicht gleich erschossen worden war, wurde auf Todesmärschen so lange ohne Wasser und Proviant durch unwegsames Gebirge oder in die syrische Wüste getrieben, bis er vor Erschöpfung starb, verdurstete oder verhungerte. Gut die Hälfte der etwa 2 Millionen Armenier im Osmanischen Reich fiel dem ersten Völkermord im 20. Jahrhundert zum Opfer. Kein fremder Staat war so nah am Geschehen wie das deutsche Kaiserreich, der wichtigste Alliierte der Türkei im Ersten Weltkrieg. Seine Missionare, Lehrer, Offiziere, Konsuln und Botschafter zeichneten die Details des Völkermords nach, einige seiner Offiziere nahmen auch aktiv an der Vernichtung der Armenier teil. Die von Wolfgang Gust vorgelegte Auswahl der im Auswärtigen Amt gesammelten Berichte gibt ein sehr genaues Bild des Geschehens – und der deutschen Mitverantwortung. Bis heute leugnet die Türkei, der Rechtsnachfolger des Osmanischen Reichs, offiziell den Genozid, noch heute weiß die deutsche Öffentlichkeit nur wenig über diesen unheimlichen Vorgänger der Shoah. Die in Der Völkermord an den Armeniern 1915/16 gesammelten, bis heute weitgehend unpublizierten Dokumente bieten Zündstoff für eine nicht nur im Hinblick auf die EU-Erweiterung äußerst brisante Diskussion – und Lehrmaterial zu der Frage, ob der Holocaust ein Vierteljahrhundert später wirklich so unvorhersehbar war.
