BRUSSELS (SANA) - In a bid to keep European Union citizens from going to fight along with the armed terrorist groups in Syria, the EU anti-terror chief Gilles de Kerchove said Wednesday he wants member nations to be more aggressive in vetting extremist social media and keep more personal data on suspicious travel. De Kerchove said the issues will be picked up by EU interior ministers in Luxembourg on Friday as they seek to contain the scale of foreign fighters leaving EU nations to take up arms with extremist opposition groups. There are fears in many EU nations that citizens who leave to fight with extremist groups with links to al-Qaeda might return home radicalized, with new knowledge and training, and the intent to set off a terror attack. http://sana.sy/eng/22/2013/06/05/486010.htm

British-Drafted UNSC Statement on al-Quseir Untimely Jun 03, 2013 MOSCOW, (SANA) – Russian Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson, Alexander Lukashevich, said on Monday that the British initiative to issue a UN Security Council statement on the Syrian city of al-Quseir "can harly be called timely and it is impossible for Russia to accept such move." Lukashevich pointed out that the city of al-Quseir has been under the control of the armed groups and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists since last February, and the Syrian army is completing a counterterrorist operation against these groups who terrorized the population of Quseir for months without restraint. “In this situation, Great Britain called for issuing a statement by the U.N. Security Council. Basically, it demanded that the Syrian military cease fire unilaterally and let the bandits encircled in several city districts get out,” he said. “Russia could not agree with this position. We stated our disagreement and the draft did not pass,” the spokesperson added. “The proposal that the international community should raise its voice at a time when the Syrian army is finishing a counter-terrorist operation against the armed groups who have been terrorizing the population of the border-lying Syrian town for several months can hardly be called timely,” Lukashevich said. He noted that “no one drew attention to the suffering of al-Quseir’s residents because of the practices of the armed groups," stressing Russia's firm stance which highlights the necessity of halting all forms of violence in Syria and ending the suffering of citizens, in addition to shifting to the peaceful political settlement based on Geneva Communiqué issued last June and the Russian-U.S. accord which was reached on May 7th in Moscow.

Answering questions of the reporters on Sunday, the Minister said the use of excessive force in the face of the Turkish people is wrong, pointing out that the Turkish demonstrators are not terrorists. Al-Zoubi said there is still an opportunity for Erdogan to halt the violence in Turkey, stressing that Erdogan should respect the will of his people and leave to Doha that might host him. http://sana.sy/eng/21/2013/06/02/485328.htm

European and International Criticism of ;EU Decision to Lift Arms Embargo for Gunmen in Syria May 29, 2013 VIENNA, (SANA) – Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced his country's opposition to supplying the "Syrian opposition" with weapons, warning that Syria might witness more violence, killing and destruction if the EU provided the gunmen with weapons. "My strong view is that the only way to end the suffering of the Syrian people is a political solution," AFP quoted Baird as saying to the reporter on Tuesday, adding that flooding Syria and the region with weapons would lead to "more violence, more death and more destruction." He stressed that Canada "has no plan of following suit" with the Europeans, expressing concern over the number of "jihadists" within the ranks of the "opposition". "Our strong concern is the number of jihadists who have entered parts of the opposition, and in our view, the situation is not getting better. It's in fact getting worse," Baird warned. Austria Voices Disappointment at French and British Stances In the same context, Austrian Foreign Minister, Michael Spindelegger, stressed that France and Britain have sought since the beginning to reject the Austrian suggestions regarding the issue lifting arms embargo to 'the Syrian opposition'. "But we have succeeded to some extend in confronting sending weapons to the opposition officially," Spindelegger told Courier Newspaper. "That the EU did not reach an agreement regarding lifting arms embargo to the Syrian opposition on Monday is not a reason for withdrawing the international Austrian unit working in Golan directly…there is no need to take such a move for the time being," Spindelegger said, adding "the future of the international Austrian unit is decided by Austrian military experts in cooperation with the UN." The Austrian Minister clarified that the disagreements that took place in Brussels on Monday were expected, pointing out to the importance of the EU nature, being a community that rejects giving weapons to areas of military conflicts despite the desire of some states such as France and Britain to contradict that. In a similar context, Australian Defense Minister Gerald Kellogg, stressed that he commissioned the Austrian Chief of Staff with forming a military commission of experts to study the situation of the Austrian unit working in Golan and the level of its readiness in case that the Austrian government would withdraw its forces. Kellogg expressed disappointment of the French and British stances and that Austria could not achieve a full success in stopping the lifting of arms embargo. He said that London's allegations of not sending weapons does not mean that the extremists in Syria have not been getting weapons now. Fourteen European states are against lifting arms embargo, on top of which are Austria, Czech and Sweden, while Britain, France, Italy and Cyprus are among those which call for lifting the embargo. Germany on the other hand is cautiously reserved. Czech Criticizes EU Decision to Lift Embargo on Terrorist Groups Earlier, the Czech Foreign Minister, Karl Schwarzenberg, criticized the European Union's decision to lift the embargo on sending weapons to the armed groups in Syria, saying "the Czech failed in its efforts to prevent that from happening." Earlier, the Czech Foreign Minister, Karl Schwarzenberg, criticized the European Union's decision to lift the embargo on sending weapons to the armed groups in Syria, saying "the Czech failed in its efforts to prevent that from happening." The Czech Radio Journal quoted Schwarzenberg as saying that "The war industries will make profits" due to this decision, adding that the British and French arms companies will benefit from this by buying more weapons in Syria. He noted that each of the states vowed to wait for the outcomes of the Geneva meetings before sending weapons, adding if no agreement was reached some countries will supply "the opposition" with arms. Belgium Will Not Provide Weapons to Opposition Gunmen in Syria Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders said that his country will not provide weapons to opposition gunmen in Syria. Reynders said that there are no guarantees as to who will receive the weapons and there is a possibility that the weapons could fall in the wrong hands, in addition to the risk of weapons spreading and being sent to other countries, which would undermine the region's stability. He also regretted that the EU couldn't reach a unified position on this issue, saying that Europe lacks cohesion. English Bulletin http://sana.sy/eng/22/2013/05/29/484587.htm

#Syria #News #freedom #Revolution Syrian Truth l The "Free Syrian Army" Has a Brigade Called "Osama bin Laden", Same FSA that West Wants to Arm This video footage from Damascus shows a brigade calling itself "Osama bin Laden", the al-Qaeda chief and founder. This brigade belongs to the Souqour Dimashq (Hawks of Damascus) Battalion of the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA). Western countries have been claiming that the FSA is comprised of somewhat "secular" people and that jihadists have only joined the fight but they are not part of the FSA. Well, you cannot get more al-Qaeda'ish than calling a brigade "Osama bin Laden". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdWVOI3NsR8

#Syria #News #freedom #Revolution Syrian Truth l Russia Providing Syria with Advanced Cruise Missiles, a Big Middle Finger to the United States Russian President Vladimir Putin has been facing international pressure not to let a deal between Russia and Syria go through, one that involves sending advanced S-300 cruise missile systems to Syria. However, Russian President decided to move forward with the deal, a move that illustrates the depth of the Russian government's support for the Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad, American officials said Thursday. Russia has previously provided a version of the missiles, called Yakhonts, to Syria. But those delivered recently are outfitted with an advanced radar that makes them more effective. FT: Qatar Spends Billions in Syria, Pays $50,000 per Dissident Local Editor The British newspaper Financial Times published an investigation on Friday entitled "Qatar spent billions of dollars in the past two years to fund the Syrian opposition." "Qatar has spent about three billion dollars in the past two years to support the opposition in Syria, which far exceeds what provided by any other government. However, the Saudi Arabia competes now in leading the bodies providing Syrian opposition with weapons," the paper said. "The cost of the Qatari intervention in Syria, which is the latest effort of the oil-rich emirate to support an “Arab revolution,” only represents a very small part of the international investment of Qatar," it added. FT indicated that Qatari support for the Syrian opposition, which turned the situation into a devastating civil war, overwhelms the Western support. The UK daily also noted that during scores of interviews it made with militant opposition leaders at home and abroad, along with senior western and regional officials, everyone stressed the growing role of Qatar in the Syrian crisis, and this has become controversial issue. The paper pointed out that "the small state with huge appetite" is the largest donor of aid to the Syrian political opposition, offering generous grants for dissidents, amounting fifty thousand dollars per year for the dissident and his family, according to some estimates. Sources close to the Qatari government told FT that the total spending on the Syrian crisis reached $3 bn, while the armed opposition and diplomatic sources said the amount of Qatari assistance reached one billion dollars at most. “According to the Institute for Peace Research in Stockholm which tracks the arms supply to the Syrian opposition,” the paper added, “Qatar is the largest arms exporter to Syria, where it funded more than 70 cargo flights of weapons to neighboring Turkey between April 2012 and March 2013.” The newspaper believed that despite the utilitarian interest behind Qatar’s intervention, the Arab emirate became stuck in the political polarization in the region. “Qatar's support for Islamist groups in the Arab countries puts it in confrontation with the other Gulf States and provokes competition with the Saudi Arabia,” the Financial Times concluded in its report. http://www.almanar.com.lb/english/adetails.php?eid=93949&cid=31&fromval=1&frid=31&seccatid=91&s1=1

Information Minister: Turkish Government Turned Borders into Terrorist Concentrations May 12, 2013 DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Information Minister, Omran al-Zoubi, said that the Turkish Government has turned the border areas into " international terrorist concentrations," stressing that it is still facilitating delivery of weapons, explosives, cars, money and killers into Syria. Addressing the Intellectual Political Symposium which kicked off Sunday at the al-Assad National Library in Damascus, al-Zoubi pointed out that the Turkish Government and its head shoulder direct political and moral responsibility towards the Turkish and Syrian peoples, as well as the peoples of the region. The Information Minister added, "No one has the right in Turkey to issue arbitrary accusations against Syria concerning the bombings which rocked Turkey yesterday as Syria has not and will not conduct such behavior." The Minister stressed that what is happening in Syria is blamed on the Turkish Government and others, and what happened in Turkey yesterday is also blamed on the Turkish Government. He added that Recep Tayyip Erdogan has to step down as he does not have the right to brag out his glories at the expense of the blood of the Turks and the Syrians. BEIJING, BRUSSELS, (SANA)-Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said that China strongly opposes using force, calling for self-restraint regarding the Israeli air raid on sites in Syria. "China strongly opposes using force as sovereignty of any country should be respected," Hua Chunying said at a press conference quoted by Xinhua. She added that Beijing calls on the sides concerned for the self-restraint and avoiding any measures which could lead to escalating tension. In Brussels, the European Union expressed concern over the possibility of extending the crisis in Syria behind borders following the Israeli aggression on some sites in Syria. "The EU follows with deep concern the latest developments in Syria, particularly the possibility of extending conflict behind borders," AFP quoted Michael Mann, Spokesman of the high representative of the EU for foreign affairs and security policy as saying at a press conference. "All should exert efforts to not affect the fragile stability in the region," Mann said, calling for finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria. DAMASCUS, (SANA)- Foreign and Expatriates Ministry on Sunday said the flagrant Israeli aggression on sites for the Armed Forces in Syria stresses coordination between Israel and the terrorist groups and the takfiris who are affiliated to Jabhat al-Nusra, which is an offshoot of al-Qaeda. In two identical letters addressed to the UN Security Council President and the UN Secretary General, the Foreign Ministry clarified that at 1:40 am on Sunday May 5th, 2013, Israeli warplanes carried out an air missile attack from the occupied territories and southern Lebanon on three sites of the Armed Forces in Syria, namely in the northeast of Jamraya, in Maysaloun and at a paragliding airport in al-Dimas area in Damascus and its countryside. It added that the Israeli aggression resulted in a number of martyrs and injured people and caused widespread destruction in these sites and the civilian areas around them. The Ministry added that this coordination between Israel and the terrorist groups aims "to provide a direct military support to these groups after they have recently failed in their attempts to gain any ground." "This leaves no room for doubt Israel is the beneficiary, the mover and sometime the executor of the terrorist acts which Syria is witnessing and which target it as a state and people directly or through its tools inside," the Ministry stressed in its letters. It added that Syria stresses in this framework the falseness of the allegations made by Israel over the recent period to justify its aggressive acts using the pretext of "transferring weapons outside the Syrian borders." The Ministry made clear that "Israel's continuation to carry out its aggressive acts would increase tension in the region and drag it into a large-scale regional war that would threaten peace and security in the region and the world." The letters pointed out that the Syrian government considers that the U.S. statements which preceded and followed the Israeli raids have encouraged Israel to carry out its aggression and provided it with a political cover to violate the Syrian sovereignty in a clear breach of the UN Charter and the international law rules. "While stressing its right to defend itself , its land and sovereignty, the Syrian Arab Republic demands that the international Security Council shoulder its responsibilities to stop the Israeli aggression on Syria and prevent its recurrence and prevent the deterioration of the situation in the region so as not to go out of control," the Ministry said. It concluded its letters by saying that Syria considers that the continuation of some permanent member states of the Security Council to provide the cover for Israel to go on with its aggression and occupation of the Arab territories, including the occupied Syrian Golan, holds them fully responsible for the repercussions that could result from the Israeli aggressive acts. H. Said ----- TEHRAN, (SANA) – Speaker of Iran's Shura Council, Ali Larijani, stressed that Israel's new aggression on the scientific research center of Jamraya in Damascus Countryside consolidates Iran's stance on the events in the region which affirms that the main goal behind creating the crisis in Syria is to undermine the axis of resistance. Addressing the Council on Sunday, Larijani said the recent events in the region have showed clearly that the aim behind "the adventure in Syria" led by the US, the Zionist entity and the Arab reactionary sides is to take the Zionist entity out of its isolation in the region through a fake plot. He added that the media hype stirred by the US and the West on accusing Syria of using chemical weapons aims mainly to cover the fact that they are actually floundering on the ground, with their tools of terrorists being in difficult situation in the various Syrian areas. Iran's Defense Minister: Israel's Assault Was Given Green Light by US For his part, Iranian Defense Minister, Maj. Gen. Ahmad Wahidi, said the aggression carried out by the usurper entity on Jamraya scientific research center jeopardizes the entire region and it is at the same time a proof of this entity's weakness and confusion due to the latest regional developments. Speaking in a statement on Sunday, Maj. Gen. Wahidi stressed that the Israeli assault was carried out with "a green light" from America and it again exposes the connection between the armed terrorist groups in Syria and their backers with the Zionist occupation. Iran's Foreign Ministry: Israel's Assault Would Lead to Destabilizing the Region Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the Israeli aggression on the scientific research center in Jamraya, stressing that this aggression would lead to destabilizing the region. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Ramin Mehmanparast, denounced in a statement on Sunday this aggression, noting that the Israeli entity persists on destabilizing the region. Israel launched a flagrant rocket attack on the Scientific Research Center in Jamraya in Damascus Countryside earlier on Sunday in a clear attempt to succor the armed terrorist groups after the painful blows the Syrian Army inflicted on them, and after the Armed Forces made major advancements to restore security and stability to Syria. Lebanese Foreign Minister: Israel's Assault Aims to Blow up the Region In the same context, Lebanese Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Adnan Mansour, condemned the Zionist aggression on the scientific research center in Jamraya in Damascus Countryside, describing it as "a dangerous act that aims to blow up the region." "Once again the Israeli entity of terrorism carries out a new aggression on Syria using false pretexts to justify this barbarous aggression," said Mansour. He added that Israel wants through this assault "to pave the way for a large-scale aggression to blow up the region and push it into a destructive confrontation, showing no concern about the disastrous outcomes that could result from this." The Lebanese Foreign Minister expressed denunciation of the international community's silence towards the aggressive acts of Israel. In an interview with al-Mayadin TV, Mansour said called for making brave decisions and standing against Syria instead of making do with statements and condemnations, since the Israeli aggression targets all Arabs. He stressed that Syria must not be left alone, asserting that the Arab nation has considerable resources and asking if this is not the time to use them against the Israeli aggression, then when will it be used? Lebanese President Denounces Israeli Aggression, Calls for Firm International Response In a statement issued by his press office, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman denounced the Israeli attacks on sites in Syria, saying that such behavior isn't unusual for an enemy whose policy is based on aggression and who exploited the current circumstances in Syria to carry out its attacks, just like it did in Lebanon in its times of difficulty. Sleiman called on the international community and the Security Council in particular to take stringent measures against Israel to dissuade it from its policy of aggression and violating other countries' sovereignty, calling for forcing Israel to comply with international resolutions and become involved in the just and comprehensive peace process. Sudanese Information Minister: Israeli Aggression on Syria is an Aggression against Arab Nation The Sudanese government's spokesman, Minister of Culture and Media Information Ahmad Bilal Othman, affirmed that the Israeli aggression on sites in Syria constitutes an aggression against the entire Arab nation. Othman told al-Mayadin TV that for Israel to attack Syrian sites while Arabs don't step in is a shameful thing for the Arab nation, calling on Arabs to reconsider the steps they took against Syria and acknowledge that major mistakes were made in this regard.
