  1. It looks like "Sevuk" is a very popular Armenian pet name. We had a cat in Armenia whose original name was Sevuk, but very quickly she became Pisko, lol.

  3. Awww, so cute I like the name Zangi.
  4. I know about boz-bash. It's a very common meal in Armenia and my mom used to prepare it often. She still makes it sometimes. Dear Arpa, thank you for your thorough reply about the naming of the dish dolma/tolma. I understand and believe you about why the Armenians call it tolma, with a "t". But you still haven't answered my question about what was that dish called hundreds of years ago? This Merriam-Webster link provided at the end of the Dolma article in Wikipedia states that the first known use of the word is circa 1889.
  5. Just wanted to add about this culinary scholar, William Pokhlyobkin, who wrote that Tolma is authentic Armenian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pokhlyobkin

To all my dear friends in this forum: I wish all of you a happy, healthy, prosperous 2011!!!!
  7. Dear Arpa, I'm curious to know your opinion about when Armenians started using the word tolma/dolma? Surely that has been around for thousands of years, long before the Turks came into existence. What did the Armenians use before tolma/dolma/sarma? Do you have that information?

  9. Very cool, thank you Arpa. I was pleasantly surprised that half of the book is available to read for free on Amazon, on the link that you provided. However, it stopped on p. 46. Since you have the book Arpa, would you mind to see what they wrote for the origin of Tolma? (In the table of contents that chapter starts on p. 70). The reason I ask is that we all have seen on various American channels grape-leaf tolma presented as either Greek or Turkish, but my mom had the Soviet book written and extensively researched by Paxlopkin (I don't know the correct spelling) in which he states that Tolma is of Armenian origin.
  10. Oh shoot, I'd forgotten that I'd made this resolution Well, I guess that's one resolution I'd like to keep this year. I'd like to learn Armenian piano works. Another resolution: procrastinate less.... lol, who am I kidding, I'm done with school! This resolution I think I can keep!

    Impressions Of The Day

You never truly grasp how someone has touched your life until they are gone. Today I found out with very great sadness that our student (my mom's student) passed away yesterday from lung cancer. She was 70 years old. Her husband called me today with the shocking news. She was of Chinese descent who had really had an interesting life. She lived in Brazil for 15 years before coming to the States permanently in the 1980's. Her childhood dream of playing the piano was realized in Brazil and she continued her piano studies with my mom for the past four years. She was a wonderful person, full of kindness. Since my mom and I teach predominantly Asian students, with the majority of our students having Chinese ethnicities, we often remark about how human character and spirit are same in all ethnicities. Goodness and kindness really has no ethnic origin. Our student was such a student. I will really miss her.
  12. Happy Birthday dear Armat!!!
  13. I thoroughly enjoyed Burlesque tonight. It was a pleasure to see an uplifting movie, with very kind and believable characters. Plus, Cher is awesome. And of course, Christina has an amazing voice. Go see the movie. You won't be disappointed
  14. OK, thanks Yervant jan, that makes sense. I'm actually pretty happy with the simplified toolbar I've been left with. I guess I'll just accept to live with those extra icons.
  15. Thanks Yervant I followed what they advised here and removed all conduit associated stuff from Firefox. The toolbar is gone, but still to the right of "home" icon on Firefox (underneath "bookmarks") there's the "compare product prices" icon and "compare travel rates" icon. I don't remember if they were there originally as part of Firefox. Do you have it as well? Or could they be leftover from conduit?
  16. Hi everyone! Can you please tell me how to get rid of Conduit program that has been somehow installed on my laptop? I'm using Firefox. I tried removing it from the Add-ons in the "Tools" but didn't work. It's still there, but no longer shows in the Add-ons!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! And Sasun, it's great to read your posts again!
  19. I was debating about this with my dad. Like the rest of the Armenians my father was saddened that a group of lowlives had perpetrated this massive crime and played with the reputation of Armenian-Americans. But he was equally upset that the media "happily" had made the announcement that this group consisted of Armenian-Americans. While I can (somewhat) understand why some people are upset I also understand why the media called out that the criminal group were Armenian-Americans. The simple fact is that this large group did comprise of Armenian-Americans and the majority of them were from Los Angeles/Glendale! So how could the media have avoided that? In the case of the fraud in Miami only four people were involved, with the media releasing the names of the two involved. It's really simple, one is an organized group of very big numbers (thus media feeling compelled to call out that the group is recent immigrants who happen to be Armenian-Americans) and the other crime doesn't involve as many people
