An Armenian Alphabet Before St. Mesrop: Bishop Daniel’s Script In 1892, I. Haroutyunian in his study suggested an idea that “Daniel’s Script” proves existence of the original alphabet of the ancient Armenians in the pagan period. In the article “On the issue of the Armenian pre-Mashtots literature” Abrahamian G.A. supports this point of view. German scientist Armenologist Joseph Marquart presumed that “the writings of Daniel” in due time could have been used to create written records and to translate. According to the records of historical sources, “Danielian script” was an ancient pattern of lost Armenian scripts. But in the V century it was no longer able to adequately capture the Armenian of those days. According to Koryun, it was the writings of Armenian alphabet, found by Syrian Bishop Daniel, and dated back to the earlier historical period: “After many days of being there for the same (business), he came to the Holy Catholicos of Armenia, named Sahak, who approved his thoughts and expressed willingness to help him in that care. And in the perfect accord they hastened to raise fervent prayers to God, to call coming upon all (men) the Salvation of Christ. And they had been doing that for many days. Then they were granted with concerned of the country (Armenia) the blessed brothers` Council meeting by the all-merciful God, in order to create an alphabet for Armenian people. For a long time they were engaged in inquiries and searches and have undergone many challenges, then they notified the king of the Armenian Vramshapouh about their ceaseless search. Then the king told them about some Syrian, decent bishop named Daniel, who suddenly had found the letters of Armenian alphabet. And when the king told about the finding, they persuaded the king of their acquisition. Then the king sent some Vagrich with a royal charter to a certain priest Abel, attendant of Syrian bishop Daniel. Upon learning of the request, Abel immediately came to Daniel and first inquired of Daniel about those writings, and then took them and sent the king Vramshapouh to Armenia. And he (Vagrich) brought (letters) in the fifth year of his reign. The king, having received the writings from Abel, becane very happy with St. Sahak and Mashtots. Then the Blessed Guardians having taken suddenly found (letters), yet asked the king the young men in order to be able to apply (in fact) the letters. And when many of them have learned, (the king) ordered to teach the same (writings) everywhere. Thus the blessed (Mashtots) was awarded the title of excellent Vardapet. About two years he has taught and conducted (classes) of these letters. But when it became clear that these writings are not sufficient to express (all) syllables of the Armenian language, as these letters were buried under other writings and (then) revitalised, then they again began trying the same thing for some time and looking for solution (of the situation).” According to Khorenatsi, these “writings” were inscribed in ancient times and arranged in order of the Greek alphabet: “At that time Arkady fell ill and in Byzantium through John the Great were big waves and fires, Greek state was plunged into turmoil, the troops fought each other and with the Persians. Therefore, Vram commanded our king Vramshapouh go down to Mesopotamia, restore order and judge the officials of both sides. He went and brought everything in order, but experienced a lot of difficulties due to the secretary, as since Mesrop left the royal court, there was no one experienced scribe, because the Persian Letters were used. On this occasion, t some priest named Habel introduced himself the king and promised to get for the Armenian language the writings, adapted by his friend Bishop Daniel. The king did not pay attention to it, but arriving in Armenia, he found all the bishops gathered at Sahak the Great and Mesrop in concerns about the invention of the Armenian alphabet. That was reported to the king, and he transferred them the words of the monk. Hearing that, they asked him to get down to this so important business. So he sent as a herald one of the venerable men of the country, close to him person, named Vahrich, from the Haduni clan. Going along, they have learned firmly from Daniel a number of letters inscribed in ancient times in order of the Greek (alphabet), and on return handed them Sahak and Mesrop. There is evidence that comes to support such an assertion. One of the Classical accounts about the existence of an Armenian alphabet comes from Philo of Alexandria (20 BCE – 50 CE), who in his writings notes that the work of the renowned Greek philosopher and historian Metrodorus of Scepsis ( ca. 145 BCE – 70 BCE),On Animals, was also translated into Armenian. Metrodorus was a close friend and a court historian of the Armenian Emperor Tigranes the Great. Amongst his great works, Metrodorus also wrote the biography of the King of Kings, Tigranes the Great. Another Third Century Roman History and Church theologian, Hyppolytus of Rome (170-235 CE), in his Chronicle, while writing about the history of the reign of his contemporary, Emperor Alexander Severus (reigned 208-235 CE), mentions that the Armenians are amongst those nations who have their own distinct alphabet. Philostratus the Athenian, a renowned sophist of Second and Third centuries AD in his The Life of Apollonius of Tyana, wrote: “And they say that a pard was once caught in Pamphylia which was wearing a chain round its neck, and the chain was of gold, and on it was inscribed in Armenian lettering: ‘The king Arsaces to the Nysian god.’” (Philostratus, The Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Book II, Chapter II, pp. 120-121, tr. by F. C. Conybeare, 1912) According to the Fifth Century Armenian Historian Movses of Khoren, Bardesanes (154-222 CE) of Edessa, who founded the Gnostic current of the Bardaisanites, went to the Armenian castle of Ani and there read the work of a pre-Christian, Armenian priest by the name of Voghyump, written in the Mithraic (Mehean or Mihrean lit. of Mihr or of Mithra – the Armenian national God of Light, Truth and the Sun) script of the Armenian temples in which, amongst other histories, an episode was noted of the Armenian King Tigranes VII (reigned from 144-161, and again 164-186 CE) erecting a monument on the tomb of his brother, the Mithraic High Priest of the Kingdom of Greater Armenia, Mazhan. Movses of Khoren notes that the renowned scholar Bardesanes, translated this Armenian book into Syriac (Aramaic), and later also into Greek. Another important evidence for the existence of a pre-Mashtotsian alphabet is the fact that the Armenian heathen pantheon included Tir, who was the Patron God of Writing and Science. A 13th century Armenian historian, Vardan Areveltsi, in his History, notes that during the reign of the Armenian King Leo the Magnificent (reigned 1187-1219), artifacts were found bearing “Armenian inscriptions of the heathen kings of the ancient times…” The evidence that the Armenian scholars of the Middle Ages knew about the existence of a pre-Mashtotsian alphabet can also be found in other medieval works, including the first book composed in Mashtotsian alphabet by the pupil of Mashtots, Koriwn, in the first half of the Fifth Century. Koriwn notes that Mashtots was told of the existence of ancient Armenian letters which he was initially trying to integrate into his own alphabet. Most of the ancient artifacts have either been lost or destroyed in the ravages of time. We must remember that what we have today and what we know is merely a few percent of the total accumulated cultural heritage of many millennia. Therefore, it is only a matter of time that new evidence, including various artifacts, including possibly ones baring inscriptions made in Pre-Mashtotsian, “mehean” script would perhaps be unearthed, and thus, would further shed light on this important topic and come to complete the written evidence that is currently at our disposal that speaks in favor of the existence of a pre-Mashtotsian Armenian alphabet. Or-Dogan took off the statue of Turko-Armeno friendship statue in Erzurum because he said he did not like it but in reality was motivated by his religious belief that forbids friendship between the two religions. Now he decided he did not like Gezi Park and ordered its demolition to make way for a mosque and a shopping complex, despite disapproval of official mayoral and planning commission of Istanbul and the inhabitant of Istanbul, a city that already has many mosques and shopping complexes. What Or-Dogen wants he gets, he always wanted to make that clear despite the Muslim beliefs of doing everything in "council" with other Muslims. On June 16, the party of Or-Dogen gathered a kangaroo crowd of 100,000 supporters for a speech and show of support to him. If you asked anyone in this crowd "what is tweeter?" he will answer: that must be a new brand of tea. So this crowd had to be brought to the meeting by buses from all over Turkey. Or-dogan began his speech by evoking the Turkish Ottoman Empire, "Where is Sarajevo? Where is Gaza tonight?" he called out. He apparently was making allusion to the fall of the empire, hinting as the empire fell so modern Turkey will fall without him if the protests against him continue (he is looking forward to be the President next year). Or-Dogan addressed the protesters directly, he called them terrorists, plunderers and that they aren't real Turks. The arrests are continuing even doctors who are treating the wounded are being arrested. Since his opponents, who are citizens from various social backgrounds and from various political and religious beliefs, were not real Turks, he felt free to deal with them as "outsiders" from his Turkish society or as the enemies of the state --today with clouds of tear-gas, water cannons, boots, clubs and bulldozers; and tomorrow with something worst. After all who remembers today the annihilation of the gavours from among them, of course he did not say that but then..he said: "Those who work against Turkey will tremble with fear". A few kilometers away from his meeting, tens of thousands fearless demonstrators had gathered again at Taksim Square voluntarily. Despite the use of violence and brute force by the police, the protesters continued to march and demand Or-Dogan's resignation. Or-Dogan said in his public-relations speech that the protests was a conspiracy conducted by foreign powers. "These forces want to harm Turkey," he said. This may be only partially truth as the West does not want Or-Dogan as the president of Turkey next year since he will modify the Turkish constitution and give the presidency more powers and thus virtually make himself a virtual despot. Or-Dogan, as a devout Muslim, before he began his final crackdown war against the protesters and the citizens' revolt, offered peace and reconciliation to them. He met their leaders in the middle of the week before 16 June. He said that judges would deliberate on the future of the controversial park and held out the prospect of a referendum on the future on the park even if the judges approved his plans. When the leaders rejected his plea bargain saying the issue is more than the park's future and more now about you as PM, Or-Dogan felt free to order total war upon them. Muslim belief says to approach your enemy with peace first, if the peace is rejected then declare war and annihilation upon your enemies. So now it looks either the PM will prevail or his opponents, there will be no meeting point.

Western women through college education have become masculinized. They are made to feel superior to males, they are encouraged to fight, to get drunk and to take the lead sexually. Now they look and act like men, and they are showed tactics on how to feminize men and take on the role of the boss. It is sad to say that presently Armenian women in Armenia are being taught to be masculine on the pretext of equality of sexes, equality does not mean abandoning the feminine role by women in favor that of the masculine, in favor of taking on dominate role in place of following their traditional and natural roles of submissiveness. We see Western women looking at a man's physique rather than his mental capacity, looking for a sex machine rather than emotional involvement. We see in the West now women expect their husbands to rise early before departing to work in order to prepare coffee and breakfast, heat the bath water and start cleaning the house for his wife if they are unable to afford a servant or a maid. Since men are stripped of their authority and respect in the house the divorces are sky-rocketing in the West since life has become without balance in the houses. The natural wisdom indicates that men & women are not similar and are not equal rather they are COMPLIMENTARY to each other. Without this balance at home and in a society then homes & societies turn unbalanced and fall down or get pushed in the direction of where the winds blow and end up miserable, confused and shattered. There has been some violence against Armenian wives in Armenia but in majority the Armenian house there is balanced, peaceful and happy. Those instances of violence does not necessitate unleashing a campaign for equality of sexes and of wives turning against their husbands, females refusing to be submissive to their husbands anymore. What the future holds for Armenia in this regard is to be observed, and Armenia, like the West, may be going to the wrong direction.

Under the proposed new law, Russian citizens would face a year in jail for "intentional" and "public" displays that cause "offense to religious sensibilities," and up to three years in jail for desecrating religious sites and paraphernalia". Mikhail Markelov, a member of the ruling United Russia party, said: "We are not talking about the subjective term 'religious offense', which is admittedly difficult to qualify. The law only punishes public acts that obviously go out of their way to insult a religion." She said the new law has been "chiseled to perfection, and reflects the desires of the majority of our society." The Russian parliament, the Duma, will hear a third and final reading in the next week. If approved, it will then go to President Putin for final approval. The Duma this week also unanimously passed a federal law banning gay "propaganda" – imposing heavy fines for providing information about homosexuality to people under 18. Together, the two laws are intended to boost the power of the Russian Orthodox Church, which professes total allegiance to the state. In a recent public address President Vladimir Putin praised the special role that the church plays in the society. "The church incessantly cares about strengthening high moral and ethical ideals and family traditions in society, and the younger generation's upbringing. The church does a lot to solve pressing social problems," said Putin.

In JUNE 1825 the centuries-old Janissary corps was forcibly disbanded by Ottoman sultan Mahmud II when the Janissaries revolted against him demanding more food and decent meals; after the rebellion was suppressed by the sultan, and after its leaders were killed, many of their members exiled or imprisoned, the Janissary corps was replaced with a more modern military force. With every speech that prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan gives, I feel the hatred and disgust against me and young people of my generation increase." "All we are after is a bit of freedom, a bit of space to live and a few trees." "(O)ver the past few days, I have witnessed so many lies from the police and government that I don't think I can ever trust them again. I have spent days with the protesters - withstanding another gas attack, cheering, singing chants and sharing food in the park - and I haven't encountered any signs of weapons or violence on their behalf." Oz said he received hate mail and death threats. Participating in "passive resistance" leaves him vulnerable. For years he feared expressing his views publicly. He failed to criticize political wrongdoing he witnessed. He'll no longer stay silent, he said. He listed five demands he and other protesters want: (1) They want Gezi Park left unchanged. Their futures are seriously compromised. They want something better. They deserve it. Perhaps now's their chance for change. Turkey's economic model features capitalism's dark side. It includes economic freedom as a be-all-and-end-all, unrestrained profit-making, privatizations, cheap labor, deregulation, corporate-friendly tax cuts, marginalized worker rights, and speculative capital inflows. Economic conditions are inherently unstable. Turkey suffers rolling recessions, crisis conditions, and fragile largely jobless recoveries. It's increasingly dependent on imports of resources and capital goods. Youth unemployment tops 22%. It's rising. It's socially and economically unstable. It's untenable. It's fuel for public rage. When well-connected private debtors are troubled or go bankrupt, their losses are socialized. Turkey's next crisis is certain. It's only a matter of when. Ordinary people are hardest hit. Youths most of all. Growing numbers have no viable futures. Profits matter more than public needs. Insecurity haunts an entire generation. The common thread is democracy in name only, inequality, political corruption, unemployment, growing poverty, insecurity, and corporate priorities over social justice. Turkey has a long history of rebellion. Turks know what's going on in troubled EU countries. They've seen it throughout the Middle East. People only take so much before reacting. Protesting is fashionable to do. It's unifying and energizing. It remains to be seen where things go....Turkey's military remains a wild card. Maybe it'll intervene. It's done it before. It may again. If not generals, perhaps party leaders or political opposition....

California Senate Unanimously Approves Hemp Legalization News June 4, 2013 by TheJoinBlog In a bipartisan, unanimous decision, California’s Senate has approved Senate Bill 566, a measure to legalize hemp. The proposal now heads to the state’s House, where its passage would put it to the governor for final consideration. “The California Industrial Hemp Farming Act will create new jobs and economic opportunities for many farmers and manufacturers across California,” stated Senator Mark Leno, the bill’s prime sponsor, “Hundreds of consumer products containing hemp are made in the Golden State, but the manufacturers of these goods are forced to import hemp seed, oil, and fiber from growers in Canada, Europe, and China. The proposal – similar to a law that was approved earlier this year in Kentucky – is designed to prepare California for the inevitable end to hemp prohibition on the federal level, something numerous federal lawmakers are working towards, including the Republican leaders of both the House and Senate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the ban into the law on February 25. The law comes into force on June 1, 2013, though some of its provisions, including a total ban on smoking in restaurants, trains and hotels, will only come into effect one year later. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in April that the new legislation banning smoking in public places could save up to 200,000 lives annually in Russia, which has some of the highest rates of smoking in the world. The legislation also imposes a total ban on tobacco advertising. Tobacco companies will be barred from holding promotional prize draws and sponsoring public events and competitions. The bill also prohibits display of tobacco products in shops. Sales in retail kiosks will be banned from June 2014, and minimum prices will be set for cigarettes, which currently cost from just 40 rubles ($1.30) a pack. As Russia goes so goes Armenia? --------------------------------------------------- Russia Warns Obama: Monsanto May 28th 137 Comments http://topinfopost.c...-obama-monsanto The shocking minutes relating to President Putin’s meeting this past week with US Secretary of State John Kerry reveal the Russian leaders “extreme outrage” over the Obama regimes continued protection of global seed and plant bio-genetic giants Syngenta and Monsanto in the face of a growing “bee apocalypse” that the Kremlin warns “will most certainly” lead to world war. According to these minutes, released in the Kremlin today by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation (MNRE), Putin was so incensed over the Obama regimes refusal to discuss this grave matter that he refused for three hours to even meet with Kerry, who had traveled to Moscow on a scheduled diplomatic mission, but then relented so as to not cause an even greater rift between these two nations. At the center of this dispute between Russia and the US, this MNRE report says, is the “undisputed evidence” that a class of neuro-active insecticides chemically related to nicotine, known as neonicotinoids, are destroying our planets bee population, and which if left unchecked could destroy our world’s ability to grow enough food to feed its population. So grave has this situation become, the MNRE reports, the full European Commission (EC) this past week instituted a two-year precautionary ban (set to begin on 1 December 2013) on these “bee killing” pesticides following the lead of Switzerland, France, Italy, Russia, Slovenia and Ukraine, all of whom had previously banned these most dangerous of genetically altered organisms from being used on the continent. Two of the most feared neonicotinoids being banned are Actara and Cruiser made by the Swiss global bio-tech seed and pesticide giant Syngenta AG which employs over 26,000 people in over 90 countries and ranks third in total global sales in the commercial agricultural seeds market. Important to note, this report says, is that Syngenta, along with bio-tech giants Monsanto, Bayer, Dow and DuPont, now control nearly 100% of the global market for genetically modified pesticides, plants and seeds. Also to note about Syngenta, this report continues, is that in 2012 it was criminally charged in Germany for concealing the fact that its genetically modified corn killed cattle, and settled a class-action lawsuit in the US for $105 million after it was discovered they had contaminated the drinking supply of some 52 million Americans in more than 2,000 water districts with its “gender-bending” herbicide Atrazine. To how staggeringly frightful this situation is, the MNRE says, can be seen in the report issued this past March by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) wherein they warned our whole planet is in danger, and as we can, in part, read: “As part of a study on impacts from the world’s most widely used class of insecticides, nicotine-like chemicals called neonicotinoids, American Bird Conservancy (ABC) has called for a ban on their use as seed treatments and for the suspension of all applications pending an independent review of the products’ effects on birds, terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, and other wildlife. “It is clear that these chemicals have the potential to affect entire food chains. The environmental persistence of the neonicotinoids, their propensity for runoff and for groundwater infiltration, and their cumulative and largely irreversible mode of action in invertebrates raise significant environmental concerns,” said Cynthia Palmer, co-author of the report and Pesticides Program Manager for ABC, one of the nation’s leading bird conservation organizations. ABC commissioned world renowned environmental toxicologist Dr. Pierre Mineau to conduct the research. The 100-page report, “The Impact of the Nation’s Most Widely Used Insecticides on Birds,” reviews 200 studies on neonicotinoids including industry research obtained through the US Freedom of Information Act. The report evaluates the toxicological risk to birds and aquatic systems and includes extensive comparisons with the older pesticides that the neonicotinoids have replaced. The assessment concludes that the neonicotinoids are lethal to birds and to the aquatic systems on which they depend. “A single corn kernel coated with a neonicotinoid can kill a songbird,” Palmer said. “Even a tiny grain of wheat or canola treated with the oldest neonicotinoid — called imidacloprid — can fatally poison a bird. And as little as 1/10th of a neonicotinoid-coated corn seed per day during egg-laying season is all that is needed to affect reproduction.” The new report concludes that neonicotinoid contamination levels in both surface- and ground water in the United States and around the world are already beyond the threshold found to kill many aquatic invertebrates.” Quickly following this damning report, the MRNE says, a large group of group of American beekeepers and environmentalists sued the Obama regime over the continued use of these neonicotinoids stating: “We are taking the EPA to court for its failure to protect bees from pesticides. Despite our best efforts to warn the agency about the problems posed by neonicotinoids, the EPA continued to ignore the clear warning signs of an agricultural system in trouble.” And to how bad the world’s agricultural system has really become due to these genetically modified plants, pesticides and seeds, this report continues, can be seen by the EC’s proposal this past week, following their ban on neonicotinoids, in which they plan to criminalize nearly all seeds and plants not registered with the European Union, and as we can, in part, read: “Europe is rushing towards the good ol days circa 1939, 40… A new law proposed by the European Commission would make it illegal to “grow, reproduce or trade” any vegetable seeds that have not been “tested, approved and accepted” by a new EU bureaucracy named the “EU Plant Variety Agency.” It’s called the Plant Reproductive Material Law, and it attempts to put the government in charge of virtually all plants and seeds. Home gardeners who grow their own plants from non-regulated seeds would be considered criminals under this law.” This MRNE report points out that even though this EC action may appear draconian, it is nevertheless necessary in order to purge the continent from continued contamination of these genetically bred “seed monstrosities.” Most perplexing in all of this, the MRNE says, and which led to Putin’s anger at the US, has been the Obama regimes efforts to protect pesticide-producer profits over the catastrophic damaging being done to the environment, and as the Guardian News Service detailed in their 2 May article titled “US rejects EU claim of insecticide as prime reason for bee colony collapse” and which, in part, says: “The European Union voted this week for a two-year ban on a class of pesticides, known as neonicotinoids, that has been associated with the bees’ collapse. The US government report, in contrast, found multiple causes for the collapse of the honeybees.” To the “truer” reason for the Obama regimes protection of these bio-tech giants destroying our world, the MRNE says, can be viewed in the report titled “How did Barack Obama become Monsanto’s man in Washington?” and which, in part, says: “After his victory in the 2008 election, Obama filled key posts with Monsanto people, in federal agencies that wield tremendous force in food issues, the USDA and the FDA: At the USDA, as the director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Roger Beachy, former director of the Monsanto Danforth Center. As deputy commissioner of the FDA, the new food-safety-issues czar, the infamous Michael Taylor, former vice-president for public policy for Monsanto. Taylor had been instrumental in getting approval for Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone.” Even worse, after Russia suspended the import and use of an Monsanto genetically modified corn following a study suggesting a link to breast cancer and organ damage this past September, the Russia Today News Service reported on the Obama regimes response: “The US House of Representatives quietly passed a last-minute addition to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill for 2013 last week – including a provision protecting genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks. The rider, which is officially known as the Farmer Assurance Provision, has been derided by opponents of biotech lobbying as the “Monsanto Protection Act,” as it would strip federal courts of the authority to immediately halt the planting and sale of genetically modified (GMO) seed crop regardless of any consumer health concerns. The provision, also decried as a “biotech rider,” should have gone through the Agricultural or Judiciary Committees for review. Instead, no hearings were held, and the piece was evidently unknown to most Democrats (who hold the majority in the Senate) prior to its approval as part of HR 993, the short-term funding bill that was approved to avoid a federal government shutdown.” On 26 March, Obama quietly signed this “Monsanto Protection Act” into law thus ensuring the American people have no recourse against this bio-tech giant as they fall ill by the tens of millions, and many millions will surely end up dying in what this MRNE report calls the greatest agricultural apocalypse in human history as over 90% of feral (wild) bee population in the US has already died out, and up to 80% of domestic bees have died out too. Electric Avenue: Solar Road Panels Offer Asphalt Alternative By Soren Harder http://www.spiegel.d...e-a-901792.html A lot of thought is put into how much energy we use to drive from point A to B. But what if the road itself could generate energy? Julie and Scott Brusaw, a married couple from Sandpoint, Idaho, have taken on just such a concept, which they hope will make the auto transport of the future cleaner and safer. The idea is as simple as it is ingenious. Wherever roads are laid, solar panels could go instead. They would generate electricity, which would in turn be fed into the grid. Thus, oil is conserved twice: Electric cars could be charged with the energy produced by the panels, and the panels would replace the use of asphalt, the production of which requires petroleum. Moreover, Solar Roadways, as the Brusaws have dubbed their invention, are heated and equipped with integrated LED screens, which act not only as street markings, but can also show warnings directly on the road. The Brusaws are aware that their vision cannot be realized in a day. They've decided to start small: with pedestrian and bicycle paths or large parking lots at supermarkets. As they see it, every square meter of asphalt that gets replaced with Solar Roadway is a small step on the path toward independence from fossil fuels. The giant leap would be to take on urban roads and highways on a global scale. A Crazy, Brilliant Idea "In the beginning, half the people thought we were geniuses, and the other half thought we were off our rockers," says Scott Brusaw. The electrical engineer has spent years trying to bring his wife's idea to fruition. Julie Brusaw is a psychotherapist. Roads didn't fall into either of their areas of expertise. But as the discussion in the United States about climate change intensified, the Brusaws were struck with the idea of solar roads, and the project took on a life of its own. In 2009 they received their first government grants to construct the prototypes. The Brusaws' work was impressive enough that this spring, they are launching a pilot project, for which the state awarded them $750,000. In their hometown of Sandpoint, Idaho, near the Canadian border, the couple has built their first parking lot made from solar panels. The Brusaws encountered a number of hurdles in their search for smart asphalt replacement, though. "It had to be textured to the point that it provides at least the traction that current asphalt roads offer -- even in the rain," explains Scott. "At the development stage, that was one of the most important requirements for the upper layer of the panels." They managed to develop such a glass, which is as hard as steel but not at all smooth. "We hesitate to even call it glass, as it is far from a traditional window pane, but glass is what it is, so glass is what we must call it," says Scott. The composition of a panel is always the same and consists of three parts: on top, a hard glass layer containing the solar panels, LED lights and heating. Then comes the second layer, which contains the controller, where a microprocessor unit activates the lights and communicates with the road panels. Finally, the bottom layer ensures that the electrical current collected from above makes it to homes and charging stations for electric cars. In addition, there is space for other cables, such as television or telephone lines. And the Brusaws have thought even further ahead. Along the sides of the modules are canals that collect water drainage for filtering. That way the water isn't wasted and can be used to water fields, for example. An Intelligent Street Network But what happens in the event of an earthquake? "While we haven't had a chance to test it yet, we understand that an earthquake can be catastrophic for a road of any type. Basically, any such force that could destroy an asphalt or concrete road would have a similar result with a Solar Roadway," says Scott Brusaw. But if one solar road panel is broken, it can simply be replaced, because all of the elements connect to create an intelligent street network, which can even use LED lights to alert drivers to dangers around the next curve. If the technology works for the pilot project, there's hardly anything that speaks against it, except perhaps that the panels might not generate as much electricity as solar panels that are positioned according to the sun's movements. Still, solar roads have massive potential. In Germany alone, there are some 230,000 kilometers (around 143,000 miles) of roadways, including the autobahn, federal, state and county roads. That's about 18,000 square kilometers of area, accounting for about five percent of the country's total territory. There's just one catch: Currently the solar road panels cost about three times as much as conventional roads, the Brusaws say. But over time, they add, the technology could begin to actually turn a profit. It sounds almost too good to be true.
